Former Graduates meet with Seniors
Fall is college application time for our seniors. Once again this year, the Counseling
Department invited Mahopac High School Alumni on the day before Thanksgiving to talk to
seniors about their college choice. Seniors were invited by House to meet with a panel of 6-8
students who graduated from Mahopac High School last June. The alumni shared their
experiences, and talked about everything from missing home the first few weeks to enjoying
their new independence. For the most part, alumni were happy with their college choice but
stressed the importance of visiting the college, interviewing at the college, planning an
overnight stay if possible, and putting time and effort into making a decision that is a good fit
for the STUDENT. Time management was mentioned as one of the biggest challenges in
college, and making responsible decisions as another.
Following the panel discussions, the alumni represented their college in a College Mini-Fair on
the West Terrace. Seniors with lunch, study hall, or a pass from their teacher were invited to
meet with the alumni and ask specific questions about their college.
~The Mahopac Counseling Department
Mahopac University
On November 1, 2007, the Mahopac High School Counseling Department hosted a college planning program entitled,
“Mahopac University.” The overall purpose of the program was to familiarize parents on various aspects of the college
process through a brief presentation and workshops on the following topics: Competitive Colleges, SUNY Schools, Students
with Disabilities and College Choice, Athletic Recruiting, and Naviance (college planning software). The first three
workshops were led by professionals who are experts in their field, while the latter two workshops were led by our counselors
and Athletic Director. The program was attended by over 250 junior and senior parents as well as students. Based on a
survey that was distributed after the program, parents reported positive feedback on the information presented and also offered
helpful suggestions for future workshops and college planning programs. The program was a huge success, was well-received
by the community, and is one of many endeavors we hope will support our students and parents on today’s increasingly
complex college process.
National Make A Difference Day was October 27, 2007. Sheila Diasparra, High School Athletic Secretary and Nancy
Eleftherion, Blue House Secretary, coordinated a local effort, along with Mahopac High School students Jimmy McGowan,
John Amodeo, Abigail Adgate, Gina Trovato, Nick Grippo, Peter Gallagher, Rick Gutierrez, Lia Iacuone, Nicole Quarto, Kelly
Molloy and Alexis Farrell. Twenty eight students from Green Chimneys were invited to play basketball, have lunch, and get to
know the MHS students. Mr. Diasparra invited Coach DeMello to give a basketball clinic which emphasized skills and
techniques. Everyone involved had a rewarding day and are looking forward to next year!
MOST (Mahopac Student Government) has been very busy
this year. A great pep rally was enjoyed by the student body
and was organized by MOST and SAC. Some said that it was
the best pep rally that they can remember in the history of the
school. The homecoming floats were well received at the
homecoming game.
On November 1 st , MOST cleaned the roadside litter on Stillwater
Road. The students put on their orange vests, took their
litter grabbers and orange bags and went to work collecting
over 25 bags of litter. MOST has adopted the street for over 20
years and cleans it twice a year.
This story can fit 75-125 words.
Selecting pictures or graphics is an
important part of adding content to
your newsletter.
Think about your article and ask
yourself if the picture supports or
enhances the message you’re trying
to convey. Avoid selecting images
that appear to be out of context.
Microsoft Publisher includes thousands
of clip art images from which
you can choose and import into
your newsletter. There are also
several tools you can use to draw
shapes and symbols.
Once you have chosen an image,
place it close to the article. Be sure
The latest project was “adopting a family” for Thanksgiving.
to place the caption of the image
This is where the MOST students will supply the
near the image.
