WORSHIP THE CHARACTER
BVP chose its icon in Swami Vivekananda who by his sheer high moral character addressed the
Parliament of Religions in Chicago with the opening words ‘Brothers and Sisters of America’ and got
thunderous applause. His entire journey was summed up by himself ‘Arise, Awake and stop not till the goal
is reached’. His teachings, preachings and books speak of high moral character.
We may install as many statues as we can at different places and garland them but it will only be
worship of Chitra not Charitra.
An incidence from the Life of Swami Vivekananda confirms this assertion:
During his all India tour in 1892, Swamiji had established a centre of Ramakrishna Mission at Mayawati
in Himalayas. After coming back from the second tour of West, Swamiji visited this centre. He found that
the in-charge of the Centre had installed a statue of Swami Ramakrishna Paramhans and started its
worship. Swamiji expressed his displeasure as softly as expected from him and ordered the removal of the
same. This shows what he thought about statues of great men. (vr% pfj=k dh iwtk gh vko';d gS)
Bharat Vikas Parishad has announced that it will continue celebrations of 150th anniversary of
Swamiji till 12th January 2014.
Another spiritual monk whose birthday falls in this month (07.03) is Maharshi Swami Dayanand
Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj way back in 1875 at Bombay. He got an enlightenment on the
Shivratri (10.3) Night and left the worldly attractions in search of the Real God. He preached the dictum
Krinvanto Vishvamaryam (Ñ.oUrks fo'oek;Ze) Let the entire world become noble. Nothing would deter him
from the path of righteousness. ‘Satyarth Prakash’ and ‘Sanskar Vidhi’ are a couple of books that guide us
to keep our head high by character building.
World Women Day (fo'o efgyk fnol ) is being celebrated on 08.03.2013. Both the monks spoke very
high about the women folk and also advocated for their right place in the society which is presently gender
based. Women have every right to educate themselves and then alone they can bring up families and
teach ethics to their offsprings. BVP also is doing its bit in this field.
Let us turn around towards the martyrs who laid their precious lives for the motherland. Imagine what
type of noble character they possessed when they never bothered about the earthly benefits as compared
to service of motherland - the real mother (oUns ekrje~ ). This is the real example, set by Sukhdev, Rajguru,
Bhagat Singh (23.3) for the youth of the country. Let us discard selfishness for the sake of our Bharat.
People of high moral aptitude and character cay only face the sufferings with determination. Both the
monks, Swami Vivekananda and Maharishi Dayanand never left the path of righteousness even though
they had to face many odds. It was because of their high moral character. Both of them got many allurements
but did not yield.
Our Sanskar Projects are a step towards this direction.
Let us follow into the footsteps of our great Rishis.
Let me end by quoting a famous quote:

CENTRAL AND PRANT SHARE W.E.F. 1 ST APRIL 2013
It has been decided in the meeting of National Governing Board held at Guwahati on 2 nd and 3 rd
February,2013 that with effect from 1 st April 2013, the Central and Prant share will be Rs.200/- each
instead of Rs.150/- each member at present.
The amount of Central and Prant share will be same throughout the year. However, the amount of
Central and State share paid by members of new branches opened during January to March in any year
from 2014 and onward will cover the succeeding one whole year also. Thus, members of new branches
opened during January to March in any year from 2014 and onward will have to pay nothing separately
for this period in the year of formation, but the amount of Central and Prant share paid by them will be

Gujarat Madhya : Prant organised 8 th all India NSGS and Folk Song Competitions on January 12-13 at
spacious premises of Adharshila International School Ahmedabad. National President, Ex. Governor and
Retd. High Court Chief Justice V.S. Kokje, Rajyasabha member and famous TV artist Smt. Smriti Irani, BVP
Gujarat Trustee & Ex. Rajya Shabha member Shri Surendrabhai Patel adorned the dais. Prant President, Shri
Vallabhbhai Ramani introduced the dignatories. Secretary General Shri S. K. Wadhwa welcomed everybody.
The chief guest Smt. Smriti Irani vindicated the significance of our ancient culture and role of Sanskrit
language. She called it a language of the universe and congratulated the parents and teachers of the students
participating in the competition. Both the competitions took place simultaneously in nicely decorated separate
halls. 36 teams all over India participated. Mementos were given to all of them as soon as their performance
was over. Shri Surendrabhai Patel (Trustee of Gujarat BVP) who had recently completed 75th year of his life
was greeted through a poetic tribute by another Trustee Shri Chaitanyabhai Trivedi in Sanskrit language and
he was given a beautifully framed memento containing the same. The second day was mainly devoted to
declaration of competition results, prize distribution and unveiling of the souvenir "Vivek Vani " jointly by
chief guest Hon. Shri Gautambhai Patel Ex-President, Gujarat Sanskrit Sahitya Academy and Justice Kokje
ji. In Sanskrit Karnataka South stood first (Bhartiya Vidyalaya-Bangalore Vidyaranya Branch.) Second rank
was shared by Maharashtra two and Tamilnadu; Andhra Pradesh (E) and Madhya Pradesh (E) were judged
3rd and 4th respectively. In the Regional folk song competition the winners were Maharashtra Coastal,
Punjab South, Karnataka South and Haryana West.

ji, pooja and arthi were performed. A grand rally
of school children of all age groups, scouts and
guides and Vikas Bandhus, all holding placards,
banners of BVP displaying Swami Vivekananda's

culminated in the Centenary Hall of Gubbi
Totadappa, the venue of the function. The rally

A-Block, Janakpuri : Swami Shardhanand
Balidan was celebrated in Shri Hari Mandir. Acharya
Devinder Shastri threw light on the life and glorious
deeds of Swami ji. He specially referred to the fact
that Swami ji was a man of principles who never
compromised on this account. There was a complete
harmony in his thought, words and deeds. After a
deep thought he started "Shuddi Movement" to
bring back to Hindu fold those who had deserted it
because of oppression, lurement with the result he
was shot dead by a fanatic Muslim, Abdul Rashid.
He made a fervent appeal to all to follow the foot
steps of this great Martyr and work with dedication
for the upliftment of our society.
B-Block, Janakpuri : The branch has been
vigorously conducting eye donation campaign for
quite sometime. During 2012 the branch has
registered 107 donors. The function organized on
13.01.2013 was to award them similar framed
certificates. This helps to remind the relatives about
the pledge at the time of death. Branch organized a
candle march on 25 th December 2012 in support of
Damini, the rape victim of Delhi. Over 250 men,
women young boys & girls and school children took
part in the march. Who later died on 28 th December.
A shradhanjali sabha was organized on 29 th December.
The branch organized a function on 26 th January 2013
to pay homage to the slain jawans of Indian Army
who were brutally martyred by Pakistan Army. Nearly
250 persons joined the function. The branch arranged
five dental camps. In regular program of Nar Sewa
Narayan Sewa ; one wheel chair, four hearing aids
and books to poor students were given. The unused
medicines were collected from members and given
to DDU Hospital for poor patients.
Greater Kailash-I : Organised a free eye
camp on 21 st December at Bal Bharti Swami
Vivekanand School Madangir. 160 students and 20
senior citizens were examined. Services of mobile
eye testing van of Arya Samaj GK-I were availed.
During the month of December remitted Rs. 8,800
to Arya Samaj towards cost of eye surgeries
performed at their medical centre of 4 poor persons
who needed help due to their financial limitations.
Smt. Promila Grover President attended the meeting
of mahila samaj on 13 th December. She gave a 40
minutes talk saying present day life is a bundle of
joys and sorrows and with spiritual way of life one
can get rid of or to a large extent lesson one's
sufferings. Organised monthly meeting of its ladies
wing on 31 st December with 24 members.Smt.
Promila Grover gave a 20 minutes illuminating talk
on 'Pariwar-Tyag in our culture'. Homoeopathy
Dispensary provided free consultation and

Jalalabad : Branch distributed shoes to
hundred needy students of Govt. Sen. Sec. School
(boys) on 16.01.2013. It became possible only with
the help of all the members and the citizens of
Jalalabad who co-operated to fulfill the demand of
needy students. A pulse polio booth was handled by
the branch with the help of all the members and staff
of health department. It was established at Muktsar
Bus stand, where many people got the benefit.

Talwandi Bhai : 600 tulsi plants were
distributed in Gaumata Smadhi Mandir complex.
Rs. 1100/- donated to Naujawan Lok Bhalai Club in
Mass Marriages of four girls. Rs. 2500/- sent to
central office new Delhi by Rajesh Sachdeva for
adoption of one child under Bal Sanskar and
Punarvas Yojna. 44 members from 4 branches
attended 6 th zonal conference at Faridkot.
Urban Estate : On 02.12.2012 medicines for
two months were provided to polio victim and on
16.12.2012, 30 pairs of winter shoes were distributed
to orphan and abandoned children residing in nari
niketan.
Dr. Kitchlu, Ludhiana : Total number of
patients registered for treatments at all the seven
locations of Bihari Lal Aggarwal BVP mobile clinic
was 794 during December, 2012. As a part of Golden
Jubilee and 150 th birth anniversary 204 woollen
sweaters were distributed in 3 schools including
school for deaf children. A free langar was organized
at BVP Viklang Sahayata Kendra for about 1,500
persons . All these arrangements were sponsored
jointly by the members of the branch with special
contributions from three member families of Shri
G.C. Miglani, Shri Vipan Thapar and Er. B.K. Bhalla.
PUNJAB NORTH
Gurdaspur : Participated in state level
competition on the eve of Balidan Diwas of Shri
Guru Teg Bahadur ji. Amanpreet Kaur got third prize
in Punjabi section. Arranged flower show and on
the spot painting competition in collabration with
environment society. The winners were honoured
with mementoes. Organised a free dental camp
were Dr. S.P. Singh alongwith his team checked
the teeth of students, free tooth pastes & brushes
alongwith medicines were distributed. Organised a
seminar on female foeticide in Pt. Mohan Lal S.D.
College for Women. The students took oath against
female foeticide. Principal Dr. Neelam Sethi
appreciated the good works of BVP especially in
the field of female foeticide and environment.
Donated one sewing machine to a needy woman of
the area and in its move for aid to needy arranged
to pay school fees of two school students.
Hajipur : Branch celebrated pre republic day
celebration in Govt. Sr. Sec. School Handwal on 25
January 2013. 440 students & 25 teachers along
school management committee members attended.
National patriotic songs were sung by children &
they were honoured with certificates. Commander

Urban Estate, Jalandhar : Distributed
woolens and school shoes to 32 school going
economically weaker girls in area of garha in Urban
Estate. A workshop was conducted for new

Karan (Karnal) : On 29.12.2012 distributed
134 sweaters and note books to needy students of
Baldev Jain Mission School. Sh.Dheeraj Chaudhary

29.12.2012 to welcome 2013. Around 40 families
were present.
On 14.01.2013 (Makar Sakranti) distributed
stationary items to 60 needy students at National

On 27 th of January 2013 branch arranged a
family meeting. Approx 50 families attended.
Members enjoyed tambola. In this meeting election

KARNATAKA SOUTH
Vidyaranya (Vijayanagar) : In the bove
competition organized at Adhara Shila Residential
School Ahmedabad on 12 th and 13 th January, 36 teams
participated. The team from Shri Bharathiya Vidyalaya
(Vidyaranya Bangalore) bagged the first prize in
Sanskrit and third prize in folk music and has thus
earned the honour for the shakha and the Prant.
Even though the Prant has won prizes in group
song competitions before, winning I st prize in
Sanskrit and also a prize in the Folk Music is a
matter of pride for all of us.

SILVER JUBILEE OF PRANT
Vijayanagar : Silver Jubilee function of
Karnataka Prant was organised at Gubbi totadappa
Centenary hall Bangalore on 5 th January 2013 with
welcome address by Shri C.N.N. Raju, Zonal
Chairman. Among the distinguished guests were
Justice Dr. M. Rama Jois MP, Justice V.S. Kokje,
National President, Smt. Vimala Jois, Dr. B.D. Patel
National Secretary Sampark, Shri N. Daulath Rao,
National Add. Secy. General, Shri K.G. Subbarama
Setty, Founder Trustee of BVP Charitable Trust and
Zonal Patron, Vikas Ratna Shri T.B. Rajeswara
Sastry, Vikas Ratna Shri Shyama R. Chaudhary,
and Shri K.S. Revanna Prant President. Several
speakers who had been associated with the Prant
from the beginning recalled the efforts of Shri P.R.
Ananda Rao, Shri Krishnaiah, Shri K.G. Subbarama
Setty, Shri Y.K. Raghavendra Rao etc. in starting
the unit of the Parishad in Karnataka 25 years ago.
Justice V.S. Kokje while congratulating the
Prant on its silver jubilee, stressed the point that
expansion of members base (Vistar) connot be
achieved just by going about soliciting membership
but by integrating with the society, identifying their
needs and problems and solving them, thereby
establishing a trust in them towards our organization.
All the aforementioned distringuished dignitaries
shared their experience and observations with the
audience which are of immense importance to the
growth of our organization. All were one in lamenting
the fact that our country continued to be known as
India, instead of exclusively as Bharat. Very many
other National and Prantiya dignitories graced the
function with their audacious presence.
The very special guests of the occasion were
Centenarian Shri G. Venkatasubbaiah, Dictionary
expert, and Shri M. Chidananda Murthy, Research
Scholar and Historian who, in their speeches,
stressed the relevance of organisations like BVP
in this era of declining moral and clultural values
and pseudo-secularism.
Several Vikas Bandhus and eminent public
figures, donors etc. who had distinguished
themselves in our sampark, sanskar, seva,
samarpan and sahayog activities were honoured
as also the office bearers of all the shakhas of Prant.
In the evening there was a lively panel discussion

Matha presided over by Smt. Vimala Jois with active
participation by many lady vikas bandhus.
The function concluded with scintillating
cultural programmes featuring dances by Kalamshu
artists and Kumari Chetana and Harshini of Hospet
and enactment of select episodes from Ramayana
by children of K.N.K. Girls High School, Dharwad.

SILVER JUBILEE OF PRANT
Paschim Cochin : The 271st regular meeting
was held on 23rd December 2012 at Hotel Abad
Chullickal where the kendra celebrated its Silver
Jubilee. Master of ceremonies were charishmatic
couple Dr. M.C. Prabhakar and Dr. Savitha
Prabhakar. The chief guest was State President
Reghunandhan while guest of honour were Harihara
Kumar, Convener, Vidhesh Vibhag, State Secretary
Athikayan and State Treasurer Rajan Pottayail and
President P.V. Venkatachalam. The President traced
out the map of the Paschim Kendra and highlighted
its achievements and contributions over the past
25 years. He recalled the contributions of charter
members Kailash Gupta and Kishore Chandak. The
Presidend honoured Sri. Kishore Chandak with a
Ponnada and a memento to a wide applause. The
President also thanked all past Presidents of the
kendra who were then adorned with the ponnada.
Sri M.R. Sharma introduced all special invitees and
office bearers from other kendras. The State
Treasurer Sri Rajan Pottayil had come especially
from Trivandrum for gracing our silver jubilee
function. The chief guest exhorted all members to
contribute to the growth and sustenance of the
kendra while congratulating the kendra on its silver
jubilee. A bouquet was presented to the chief guest
apart from a memento and ponnada traditional
(kerala shawl) Sri Harihara Kumar spoke at length
and wanted the members to involve and support
the puthuvyape project in the form of medicines
and other financial support besides sponsorship.
The President adorned a ponnada to Sri Harihara
Kumar and also presented a memento to him. Sri
Athikayan State Secretary and Sri Rajan Pottayil
State Treasurer offered their felicitations to the
kendra. Gifts were presented to the members on
their birthdays and wedding anniversaries. In the
lucky dip winner was Smt. Chhaya S. Joshi. A
memento was also gifted to the master of
ceremanies. Entertainment consisted of song from
Chhaya Joshi and Mimicry from Lata
Venkatachalam. There was dance recital also.

conducted in the adopted villageRamanayya Peta.
Medicines were also supplied free of cost.
Branch conducted Bhagvatgeeta competition
with Sh. Annapurna Sharma as convenor among
the students up to X th class. Sh. Ravishankar Patnaik
Prant General Secretary distributed the prizes. The
recitation competition was from 18 th chapter
(Moksha sanyasa yoga) 200 students participated.

Manukota : Branch conducted rangoli
competitions on the eve of makara sankranti on
14.01.2013. Inaugurating the function BVP Kakatiya
region Secretary V. Ramakoteshwar Rao said that
it is a good exercise for the women. Dr. R. Madhava
Rao Garu was the cheif guest. 50 women
participated. It was presided over by Shri B.
Narender Reddy. All the participants were felicitated
in the traditional manner by presenting the blouse
piece and tambulam. The prizes were sponsored
by Shri P. Rajasekhar Garu and Shri B. Maheshwar

Swami Vivekanad : Branch organized Swami
ji's anniversary function at Green Belt Park, Gandhi
Nagar. About 250 persons participated. The flag

the relevance of Swami Vivekanand's life and the

SAMAGRA GRAM VIKAS
Samagra Gram Vikas Yojana was started way back in 2001 when Khajjiar in Himachal Pradesh was
taken up for its all round development. Today it speaks for itself.
Later with the active involvement of Jindal Foundation of Canada with Dr. Shiv Jindal (Chairman,
Samagra Gram Vikas) and Mrs Sarita Jindal (Vice Chairman, Samagra Gram Vikas), this project got
momentum.
As of now the development work has been completed/near completion in 16 villages. Jindal
couple visits India in the month of November every year to see for themselves the ground reality of each
and every village.
This year too Dr. Shiv Jindal and Smt Sarita Jindal toured all the villages in the company of Bharat
Vikas Parishad Office Bearers of various states who briefed them about the utilisation of the financial help
being given by Jindal Foundation for village development.
Dr. Shiv Jindal has a clear vision about such developmant that mainly includes Health, Education,
Environment, providing Rozgar, Drinking water, Sanitation etc.
During their tour, the couple visited the following villages this year:
Mathana (Distt Baran-Rajasthan); Bhiludi (Dungerpur, Rajasthan) Bhojras (Rajasthan); Kaduamu Ghanshara
