Darmatt H30 EASYFIT Flexible Passive Fire Protection
Darchem Thermal Protection launches the Darmatt H30 EASYFIT
flexible jacket Passive Fire Protection system.
Darchem’s well renowned and Lloyds Type Approved Darmatt flexible PFP jackets have traditionally used a
stainless steel 316 multi-strand lacing method to fasten the PFP enclosure panels together. The lacing method
ensures enclosure integrity is maintained throughout the installed product lifetime, and that the most
strenuous of fire conditions is resisted. Offering up to 180 minutes Jet Fire and Hydrocarbon Pool fire
protection, Darmatt can be fitted to valves, actuators, instrument panels, process vessels, cable trays,
pipework and has been supplied extensively worldwide for both Onshore and Offshore Oil & Gas and
Petrochemical installations.
Darchem recognises that for up to H30 fire specifications, other options of securing flexible jacket enclosures
are safe and reliable, and are introducing a new Lloyds Type Approved version of our flexible PFP jacket,
Construction Details
Each Darmatt enclosure is specifically engineered to fit closely
around the protected equipment providing removable, compact and
user friendly fire protection. Darmatt is constructed from pre-shaped
panels designed to fit together around the equipment to be protected.
Each panel is made up of layers of insulation fibre and reflective foil,
compressed and studded with nylon pins throughout the panel’s area.
The complete exterior is covered by a non-fire rated weather resistant
outer cloth.
The nylon pins hold the components in the Darmatt PFP system together to ensure that the insulation
materials remain securely in place and do not migrate to a different part of the panel (as experienced with
lower quality PFP and insulation jacket systems). The nylon pins also compress the insulation to approximately
60% of its original thickness to provide a very flexible but compact system. All this helps to ensure that the PFP
system is easy to remove and re-install.
Accessibility – Space Frame, Inspection Hatches, and Penetrations
Inspection hatches can be provided for each Darmatt installation to provide quick access to areas
of the protected equipment that requires regular inspection or maintenance. Also, access can be
further improved by utilisation of a space-frame around actuator controls. Lloyds have approved
these hatches and use of a pultruded GRP or SS316 angle frame work incorporated within the
Darmatt PFP system.
Penetrations for operating mechanisms, hydraulic tubing and
position indicators etc. can be provided to facilitate problem-free
operation and maintenance of equipment without the need to
remove the jackets.
It is important that the client identifies any requirements for
hatches and penetrations as early as possible such that they can
be incorporated into the Darmatt PFP system’s design.
Darmatt H30 EASYFIT PFP Panel Fastening Method
Unlike traditional Darmatt, Darmatt H30 EASYFIT panels are fastened
together using high quality multi-layer straps containing fire resistant KM-1
cloth. Coupled with a D-ring buckle system, the straps can be pulled tight to
ensure a secure fit of the panels around the equipment in such a way that they
take shape around the valve / actuator. Once installed, each panel will retain
its moulded shape making future removal / installation quicker and easier.
The straps are specially manufactured in-house by Darchem, and testing has
shown strength, form and function to be retained for fire periods greater than
60 minutes.
Testing & Certification
Since its introduction Darmatt has been tested continuously to prove its capability as a passive fire
protection system. Similarly, the Darmatt H30 EASYFIT system has been tested and witnessed by Lloyds
Register and approved for 30 minutes UL1709 hydrocarbon pool protection. Although testing showed that
Darmatt H30 EASYFIT can be designed to protect valve, actuators and other critical equipment for a period of
greater than 30 minutes, Darchem offers our traditional Darmatt SS316 laced jackets for longer Hydrocarbon
Pool fire and Jet Fire periods.
test sample – before and
after images from 60
minutes at 1,100°C and then
The Darmatt PFP System is Lloyds Type Approved and also holds additional accreditation from DNV and ABS.
Optimisation of Insulation Thickness
Darchem Engineering use Lloyds approved software called “Offtranp” to determine the optimal insulation
thickness for each PFP application. This ensures that adequate insulation is provided to protect the equipment
in the fire condition and that the thickness of the insulation is kept to the absolute minimum. The following
factors are input into “Offtranp” to confirm the temperature drop across the insulation after a set period of
time during the fire:

Type and duration of Fire
Limiting Temperature Rise
Relevant ambient and operating temperatures
Mass and volume and exposed Surface Area of Equipment
Darmatt applications include:
Valves and
actuators
Process vessels
Pipe work and flanges
Cable trays
