<strong>2013</strong> <strong>Scholarship</strong> Opportunities<br />

The <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> Chester/Liberty has a variety <strong>of</strong> scholarships available to students looking to<br />

pursue higher education. The following page highlights scholarships currently available through the <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the scholarships have restrictions to students from a specific high school or area <strong>of</strong> residence. Most<br />

scholarships require the applicant to live in <strong>West</strong> Chester or Liberty Townships. Additional restrictions and<br />

requirements are listed with each description. For more information about scholarship opportunities, please call the<br />

<strong>Foundation</strong>’s <strong>of</strong>fice at 513-874-5450.<br />

How to apply:<br />

IMPORTANT: Review each scholarship eligibility criteria carefully, as they are all different;<br />

Place a check in the box next to each scholarship you are interested in applying for<br />

(you must meet the eligibility criteria);<br />

Fill out the scholarship application included in this packet;<br />

Submit the completed application packet along with:<br />

o School transcripts <strong>of</strong> grades, if applicable<br />

o Two (2) recommendations from school counselor, coach, employer or teacher<br />

o If applicable, Parent/guardian signed IRS tax forms from 2012 .<br />

All applications must be received prior to April 1, <strong>2013</strong>. At this time, the <strong>Foundation</strong> is unable to accept<br />

applications via fax or email.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> applications are reviewed by the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s Education and <strong>Scholarship</strong> Committee and/or specific<br />

committees established on behalf <strong>of</strong> the scholarship. All information provided within the application will be held<br />

in strict confidence. During the review process, Committee Members may need to contact the applicant,<br />

parent/guardian or school administrator for additional information.<br />

All applicants will be notified in writing whether or not they receive an award. <strong>Scholarship</strong> recipients who attend<br />

Lakota Schools will be presented with their award at the Senior Award Night in May. Checks are made payable<br />

to the schools financial aid <strong>of</strong>fice and will be sent directly to the school.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Opportunities<br />

The <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> Chester/Liberty <strong>Scholarship</strong> – $500 (two awarded)<br />

This scholarship provides financial assistance for college to any high school student who has sufficient need<br />

(Must provide IRS Tax Forms). This scholarship, open to any student in the <strong>West</strong> Chester/Liberty area, is for<br />

students who wish to attend a trade school, two-year technical or community college or a four-year college or<br />

university. (GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.0 or above)<br />

Dr. Masood and Shakila Ahmad <strong>Scholarship</strong>– $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

The Dr. Masood and Shakila Ahmad <strong>Scholarship</strong> is to recognize and encourage Interfaith and Civic Engagement<br />

in our community with a $1,000 scholarship to a student graduating from any school in Butler County, Mason<br />

High School, Sycamore High School or St. Xavier High School. It is awarded to a senior who is committed to and<br />

has exhibited excellence through Interfaith and Civic Service engagement in his/her community and region. The<br />

student should demonstrate through the essay and his/her activities about the value and benefits <strong>of</strong> reaching across<br />

faith communities, dialogue and collaboration with others regardless <strong>of</strong> religion, race or ethnicity for serving the<br />

greater good and building a stronger community. The student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and plans to<br />

attend a 2 or 4 year college degree program.<br />

Kyle J. Babcock <strong>Scholarship</strong> –$2,000 (one awarded)<br />

Kyle James Babcock was an 18 year old Fenwick High School senior when he was lost in a tragic automobile<br />

accident just a few days before graduation. Always an ambitious, industrious young man, Kyle graduated with a<br />

3.8 GPA and had been awarded a scholarship to Wittenburg University. His years <strong>of</strong> practice and training as a<br />

soccer player had earned him starting positions on multiple club teams, saw him elected captain <strong>of</strong> his high school<br />

team as well as placement on the Wittenburg University Men’s soccer team his upcoming freshman year. Kyle’s<br />

engaging personality, strident work ethic and unfaltering loyalty to family, friends and teammates endeared him to<br />

many and earned the respect <strong>of</strong> many others. Kyle was a truly happy soul and the scholarship allows his spirit to<br />

live on by providing an opportunity to a student who will attend or is attending Bishop Fenwick High School<br />

in Middletown. The student must demonstrate community and/or school involvement; and who most exemplifies<br />

the qualities Kyle possessed. This scholarship is based on merit and is to be used toward tuition.<br />

Julia Ellen Burnett <strong>Scholarship</strong>–$500 (one awarded)<br />

Julia was born on April 21, 2006 with Trisomy 18, a rare chromosomal anomaly that the medical community<br />

describes as “incompatible with life.” Despite her prognosis, Julia’s parents were blessed to share six precious<br />

days with their beautiful daughter before she went home to be with God. From the very beginning, the family had<br />

a lifetime <strong>of</strong> dreams for Julia. It is the family’s desire to celebrate Julia’s life and continue her legacy by helping<br />

other young people realize their own dreams. This scholarship will require a hard-working and well-rounded<br />

student with a strong background in school and community involvement. Applicant must live in Mason, <strong>West</strong><br />

Chester Township or Liberty Township. A minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 is required. Applicants must submit three (3)<br />

letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation. One (1) letter must be from a teacher or guidance counselor and the other two (2) must<br />

be from a pr<strong>of</strong>essional relationship (teacher, guidance counselor, employer, clergy, etc.)<br />

Butler County Republican Women’s Club <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

The Butler County Republican Women’s Club has established a <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund to support the tuition <strong>of</strong> Butler<br />

County residents attending post-secondary school. Applicants must be entering their Sophomore or Junior year<br />

and demonstrate their financial need. Applicants must also showcase their passion and engagement in their<br />

community.<br />

Jordan Day <strong>Scholarship</strong> - $1,000<br />

Established in 2011, this $1,000 scholarship is made in memory <strong>of</strong> Jordan Day, a Lakota East golfer who died in<br />

2010. This scholarship was created through the donations <strong>of</strong> friends and family who wish to honor the<br />

extraordinary talent, hard work and dedication Jordan exemplified — on the course and throughout his life —<br />

with an award that will be given each year to senior on the Men’s or Women’s Lakota East Golf Team. In all<br />

things, and especially in golf, Jordan was competitive and determined. He rose as a leader wherever he played,<br />

stepping onto the grass each day with a joke to tell and a hand to lend.<br />

Demois Family <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

This scholarship opportunity is being presented to Lakota <strong>West</strong> Seniors looking to pursue their post-secondary<br />

education. Students must express their financial need via their submitted essay. (Must provide their 2012 IRS Tax<br />

Forms). Applicants must be an active participant in the Orchestra, Choir or Performing Arts (Theatre). Instructors<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Applicant may be contacted for references and upcoming performances may be attended by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Selection Committee.<br />

Harold Draut <strong>Scholarship</strong> –$750 (one awarded)<br />

The Harold Draut <strong>Scholarship</strong> provides a legacy to Mr. Draut a Lakota educator for almost 30 years. Mr. Draut<br />

was a caring, sensitive, trustworthy and unselfish man whose sense <strong>of</strong> humor and humble spirit endeared him to<br />

everyone. A $750 scholarship is available to a Lakota East or Lakota <strong>West</strong> High School senior who<br />

demonstrates community involvement and plans to pursue higher education including trade schools.<br />

Susan Hendel <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $500 (one awarded)<br />

This scholarship opportunity is provided to women over the age <strong>of</strong> 30 who are returning to school or are attending<br />

a post-secondary school for the first time. Applicants must demonstrate need and show a strong desire to continue<br />

their schooling.<br />

Matthew and Andrea King Servant Leadership <strong>Scholarship</strong> - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

This scholarship opportunity has been established to recognize a deserving student who has greatly impacted the<br />

<strong>West</strong> Chester/Liberty community and its citizens through service and leadership. Students who live in <strong>West</strong><br />

Chester or Liberty Township may apply. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.7. The recipient <strong>of</strong><br />

the scholarship must display a passion for service and be able to articulate how they have greatly impacted the<br />

<strong>West</strong> Chester/ Liberty community and/or community members. Letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation MUST be from the<br />

service organizations or community member/s impacted. An additional essay is required for consideration <strong>of</strong><br />

this scholarship award. Please visit the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s website for details.<br />

Greg Lemmel Memorial <strong>Scholarship</strong> - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

Greg was a good, compassionate man who gave generously <strong>of</strong> himself to his family and friends. He had a great<br />

sense <strong>of</strong> humor, loved people and had a heart for those in need. This scholarship has been established to extend<br />

his spirit <strong>of</strong> giving. Greg was a long time parishioner at St. Susanna and a long time supporter <strong>of</strong> Fenwick High<br />

School. It is fitting this scholarship be awarded to students graduating from St. Susanna planning to attend<br />

Bishop Fenwick. In the true spirit <strong>of</strong> Greg, this scholarship will be made available to students who strive to<br />

give to their community, participate in school activities, demonstrate financial need and maintain a "B" or better<br />

average. This $1,000 scholarship has an option for renewal each year the recipient attends Fenwick and maintains<br />

the described criteria.<br />

Troy & Tania Meyers Culinary <strong>Scholarship</strong> - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

Established in 2012 by the owners <strong>of</strong> Troy’s Café in <strong>West</strong> Chester, this scholarship opportunity is directed to<br />

students at Lakota East or Lakota <strong>West</strong> who plan to attend a Culinary School/Program. The Meyers passion is to<br />

assist those students looking to enter the culinary field by awarding this $1,000 scholarship and hope to provide<br />

additional support by providing guidance based on their experience to students entering this career path.<br />

Applicants must address their desire to attend a Culinary School/Program through the essay that is submitted.<br />

Pete’s List <strong>of</strong> Excellence in History and Government – $250 (two awarded)<br />

Raymond (Pete) Peters put aside his educational aspirations to put his life on the line in World War II. After<br />

legislation was signed enabling WWII veterans to receive their high school diploma, Pete received his diploma<br />

during a celebration for his 75 th birthday. Like Pete, Pete’s List, recognizes two college-bound Lakota High<br />

Seniors, one from <strong>West</strong> and one from East, who have excelled in History and Government. <strong>Scholarship</strong> will be<br />

awarded to a high school senior who demonstrates superior capability, interest and understanding <strong>of</strong> World and<br />

U.S. History subjects, including Government and Civics. The recipient must be in the top third <strong>of</strong> their graduating<br />

class as calculated through the 1 st semester <strong>of</strong> senior year or time <strong>of</strong> award, whichever is available; be a wellrounded<br />

student who may work to pay for college education and/or may be involved in other extracurricular<br />

Activities; have been accepted to and planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university program. Award will<br />

not be based on student’s preference <strong>of</strong> major or course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Kristin Renneker <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund – $2,000 (two awarded)<br />

Kristin’s spirit lives on through two - $2,000 scholarships—benefiting a female student at Lakota East and a<br />

student at Lakota <strong>West</strong> High Schools. Kristin is remembered as a beautiful, intelligent, athletic and outgoing<br />

student. In addition to sharing the captain spot on the varsity basketball team, Kristin was an All-Academic GMC<br />

player who participated in two varsity sports. The scholarship allows Kristin’s spirit to live on by providing this<br />

scholarship opportunity to a graduating senior female athlete who has participated in interscholastic athletics, at<br />

least in their senior year. This scholarship is given to the student(s) who most exemplifies the qualities Kristin<br />

possessed. The student must demonstrate community and/or school involvement; and exhibit high academic<br />

achievement with a minimum accumulative 3.3.GPA.<br />

Karen M. Schroeder Memorial <strong>Scholarship</strong> – $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

The Karen M. Schroeder Memorial <strong>Scholarship</strong> is for a graduating Lakota East senior who shows a flair for<br />

creativity in any artistic endeavor. This might include graphic arts, singing or performing arts. The students must<br />

be committed to attending one <strong>of</strong> the arts programs at Miami University, Ohio. The student must have at least a<br />

3.0 GPA and demonstrate some degree <strong>of</strong> financial need (attach IRS Tax Form). In addition to the application, the<br />

student should write a essay, or make a case in a creative format (artwork, song, etc.) describing why they feel<br />

they are the best candidate for the award. The hope is that students will have fun with this application.<br />

Jessica Ann Siegel <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $2,500 (one awarded)<br />

Jessica Siegel is remembered as a caring, compassionate, 16 year old with a great sense <strong>of</strong> humor and a beautiful<br />

smile. Jessica had wit and wisdom way beyond her years. She will be remembered for her school spirit and<br />

making everyone that crossed her path feel important. Not only did she make everyone laugh, she brought joy into<br />

the lives <strong>of</strong> those around her. She had been accepted into the teacher's academy at East and was hoping to attend<br />

OSU to become a history teacher. This scholarship will help keep her spirit alive in the halls <strong>of</strong> Lakota East<br />

High School by giving a student with the same caring attitude and qualities that Jessica possessed a jump start in<br />

fulfilling their dream. The scholarship recipient must demonstrate thoroughly those characteristics listed above<br />

while maintaining a 3.0 GPA.<br />

Dana Spangler <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $500 (one awarded)<br />

This scholarship has been established in memory <strong>of</strong> Dana Spangler, a young lady who had a great love <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

Dana was active student in school and community who loved volleyball and s<strong>of</strong>tball. This scholarship is<br />

available to any graduating female senior from Lakota East High School who shows financial need (Must<br />

provide 2012 IRS Tax Forms) and plans to attend a college or junior college.<br />

Ezekiel “Zeke” Stepaniak <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $1,000 (one awarded)<br />

Zeke was a 17-year old Lakota <strong>West</strong> student who was loved by all. His smile, his laughter, his loving heart was<br />

contagious. He loved to hang out with friends and family. He also loved to play video games and draw. He was<br />

very artistic. His presence would brighten your day. He always put other before himself. A true friend that you<br />

could always count on, Zeke planned to continue on to college after High School. And this scholarship is to honor<br />

Zeke. Applicants must be a male, Lakota <strong>West</strong> High School Senior who demonstrates similar characteristics and<br />

would like to continue their education in a field <strong>of</strong> creative design.<br />

Voice <strong>of</strong> America Centre <strong>Scholarship</strong> For Returning Veterans – up to $5,000<br />

Provided by Midland Atlantic Properties, this scholarship is provided to assist veterans returning from active duty<br />

with educational and/or family obligations. Applicants must be accepted at an accredited college or<br />

technical/vocational school and must demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is to be used for school related<br />

expenses and will not replace any benefits provided by the Federal Government. The selection committee will<br />

consider applicants who are residents <strong>of</strong> Mason, Fairfield or Sharonville, however residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong><br />

Chester/Liberty Township are preferred. In addition, priority will be given to those who have served in foreign<br />

service and documentation (DD214 Form) to confirm your status is required. Applicants must provide their 2011<br />

IRS Tax Forms.<br />

Winterman Resiliency <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund - $500<br />

Resiliency is defined as being hardy, tough, strong, quick to recover, feisty and buoyant. This scholarship is<br />

looking for a student who has overcome adversity to become a community leader. This $500 scholarship award has<br />

been established to support a student who has been in foster care at some point in their life (Priority will be given<br />

to students placed in Butler Country Children’s Services). The student should be a community leader whether<br />

through academics, athletics or community service and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. The award must be used to<br />

support post-secondary education. Please email Melissa Benedict at Melissa@wclfoundation.com to receive a<br />

rubric that includes additional selection criteria.<br />

Roy H. Yelton <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund — $500 (one awarded)<br />

H. Yelton <strong>Scholarship</strong> Fund was established to encourage new generations <strong>of</strong> youth to the community service that<br />

was the hallmark <strong>of</strong> the beloved Roy H. Yelton, founder <strong>of</strong> Yelton Fine Jewelers. Roy was giving, compassionate<br />

and cared for those around him in a genuine and pr<strong>of</strong>ound manner. This scholarship has been developed to honor<br />

Roy’s memory and encourage a student who shares his desire to help others. The scholarship will be awarded to a<br />

high school senior in Butler County who is planning a college major in a public service field. The GPA minimum<br />

requirement is 2.5.<br />
