Note:<br />

• All tests and results should be recorded <strong>in</strong> a laboratory rape register that<br />

should c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>: name, registrati<strong>on</strong> number, date, age, sex,<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>s d<strong>on</strong>e, results and a place for any<strong>on</strong>e who takes specimen to<br />

sign <strong>in</strong> order to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> custody <strong>of</strong> evidence. The Laboratory rape<br />

register should be kept well locked away and <strong>on</strong>ly accessible to authorized<br />

health facility pers<strong>on</strong>nel as a measure towards preserv<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>fidentiality.<br />

• The above tests can be carried out <strong>on</strong> the survivor and also <strong>on</strong> the perpetrator.<br />

• With regard to the perpetrator, the court can under secti<strong>on</strong> 26(2) and 36 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

SOA, order that certa<strong>in</strong> specific samples be collected.<br />

Document collecti<strong>on</strong>: It is good practice to compile an itemized list <strong>in</strong> the<br />

survivor’s medical notes or reports <strong>of</strong> all specimens collected and details <strong>of</strong><br />

when, and to whom, they were transferred.<br />

Handl<strong>in</strong>g Exhibits<br />

• Exhibits should not be exposed to direct light and sunsh<strong>in</strong>e. If wet, exhibits<br />

are dried under shade or dark rooms;<br />

• Exhibits should be marked properly and signed for immediately up<strong>on</strong><br />

receipt and stored;<br />

• All exhibits <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g documents filled (e.g. PRC, P3) must be kept <strong>in</strong> places<br />

that guarantee safety and c<strong>on</strong>fidentiality.<br />

4. Cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Custody <strong>of</strong> Evidence<br />

4.1 Cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Evidence<br />

This refers to the process <strong>of</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, preserv<strong>in</strong>g and c<strong>on</strong>vey<strong>in</strong>g evidence<br />

through accountable track<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms from the community, health facility<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ally to the police. Also refers to a paper trail where the movement <strong>of</strong><br />

evidence is traceable through the different pers<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> sample<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong>, analysis, <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> and litigati<strong>on</strong>)<br />
