7. Types <strong>of</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Trauma counsel<strong>in</strong>g and psycho-educati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• EC counsel<strong>in</strong>g and unwanted pregnancies;<br />

• Pre-and post-test HIV counsel<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• Adherence counsel<strong>in</strong>g for Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV and<br />

other STIs;<br />

• Follow-up sessi<strong>on</strong>s;<br />

• Psychosocial support for groups and the community;<br />

• Informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> survivors’ rights, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g legal care.<br />

7.1 Trauma Counsel<strong>in</strong>g and Psycho-Educati<strong>on</strong><br />

• The recommended m<strong>in</strong>imum period <strong>of</strong> trauma counsel<strong>in</strong>g is five less<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

• The first sessi<strong>on</strong> should <strong>in</strong>clude psycho-educati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the<br />

nature and symptoms <strong>of</strong> post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<br />

• The stabilizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the survivor is an important step at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />

counsel<strong>in</strong>g process.<br />

Stabilizati<strong>on</strong> means that the pers<strong>on</strong> gets a sense <strong>of</strong> “be<strong>in</strong>g grounded” back <strong>on</strong> their feet<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>, emoti<strong>on</strong>ally and socially. Emoti<strong>on</strong>al stabilisati<strong>on</strong> means mend<strong>in</strong>g the identity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the traumatised pers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Note: The counselor should assess the safety <strong>of</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment to which the survivor<br />

is return<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> case <strong>of</strong> domestic sexual violence and make referrals as appropriate.<br />

7.2 Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Related to the Possibility <strong>of</strong> a Pregnancy<br />

Emergency C<strong>on</strong>tracepti<strong>on</strong><br />

The counselor should expla<strong>in</strong> that after EC is provided, there is still a risk <strong>of</strong> pregnancy.<br />

The later EC is taken, the higher the risk <strong>of</strong> a pregnancy.<br />

Pregnancy Counsel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The counselor should educate the pregnant survivor <strong>on</strong> short and l<strong>on</strong>g term<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequences <strong>of</strong> unwanted pregnancy after rape. The survivors should be given<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> child adopti<strong>on</strong> or term<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> pregnancy as available opti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

(Term<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> pregnancy is allowed <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kenya</strong> after rape. It however requires<br />

psychiatric evaluati<strong>on</strong> and recommendati<strong>on</strong> [<strong>Sexual</strong> Offences Act 2006]). In case the<br />

woman decides to term<strong>in</strong>ate the pregnancy, counsel<strong>in</strong>g is necessary before and after<br />

term<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the pregnancy to prevent l<strong>on</strong>g term c<strong>on</strong>sequences <strong>of</strong> the pregnancy<br />

term<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
