• Perform a top-to-toe exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g for any signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury;<br />
• C<strong>on</strong>duct a thorough exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the genito-anal area;<br />
• Treat any <strong>in</strong>juries (men also need to be treated for STIs, hepatitis B and tetanus).<br />
Men should be <strong>in</strong>formed about, and <strong>of</strong>fered, a HIV test and the opti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> post-exposure<br />
prophylaxis, if available. Men should receive follow-up care for wound heal<strong>in</strong>g, any<br />
prescribed treatments (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those for STIs), completi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> medicati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />
counsel<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
11. Medical <strong>Management</strong> <strong>of</strong> Perpetrators <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sexual</strong> <strong>Violence</strong><br />
In the event a medical practiti<strong>on</strong>er f<strong>in</strong>ds him or herself c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted with a perpetrator<br />
<strong>in</strong> need <strong>of</strong> medical treatment, the practiti<strong>on</strong>er should accord the perpetrator the<br />
necessary treatment as they (perpetrators) too have the right to medical treatment to<br />
ensure they access prophylaxis for HIV/AIDS and STIs and management <strong>of</strong> physical<br />
<strong>in</strong>juries (<strong>Sexual</strong> Offences Act 2006). The treatment <strong>of</strong> perpetrators should be the same<br />
as for the survivors <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> forensic specimens and counsel<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
