9. Hepatitis B Preventi<strong>on</strong><br />

The generally available Hepatitis B Vacc<strong>in</strong>es do not provide any protecti<strong>on</strong> from<br />

<strong>in</strong>fecti<strong>on</strong> if given after an exposure (e.g.: sexual assault), but they do provide<br />

protecti<strong>on</strong> from future exposures. It is much less costly to vacc<strong>in</strong>ate all survivors <strong>of</strong><br />

rape/sexual violence, rather than to test every<strong>on</strong>e for Hepatitis B antibodies to see<br />

who might benefit. Ideally, if Hepatitis B Vacc<strong>in</strong>es is available, it should be c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />

for survivors <strong>of</strong> sexual violence accord<strong>in</strong>g to the revised schedule <strong>in</strong> the table below.<br />

10. Medical <strong>Management</strong> <strong>of</strong> Adult Male Survivors <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sexual</strong> <strong>Violence</strong><br />

Men most comm<strong>on</strong>ly experience sexual violence <strong>in</strong> the form <strong>of</strong>:<br />

• Receptive anal <strong>in</strong>tercourse;<br />

• Forced masturbati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the perpetrator;<br />

• Receptive oral sex;<br />

• Forced masturbati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the victim.<br />

Male survivors <strong>of</strong> sexual violence should be triaged <strong>in</strong> the same manner as female victims.<br />

The same procedures for obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>sent, tak<strong>in</strong>g a history, c<strong>on</strong>duct<strong>in</strong>g the physical<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (although the genital exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> will be different) and order<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diagnostic laboratory tests should be followed, that is:<br />
