6.3 Recommended PEP Regimens for Adults<br />

Stavud<strong>in</strong>e 40 mg (<strong>on</strong>ly if a fridge is<br />

Fixed Dose Comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s, where the above comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> drugs are comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>on</strong>e tablet, should be used if available. This reduces the number <strong>of</strong> pills taken and so<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases compliance to treatment.<br />

6.4 Recommended PEP Regimens for Children<br />

For children, the same drugs are used but the doses must be given accord<strong>in</strong>g to weight<br />

and/or surface area. Both syrups and tablets can be used.<br />

6.4.1 Syrup based regimen for children<br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

AZT + 3TC:<br />

Z<strong>in</strong>ovud<strong>in</strong>e: 2 mg/kg<br />

Lamuvid<strong>in</strong>e 4 mg/kg<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d l<strong>in</strong>e D4T* + 3TC:<br />

Stavud<strong>in</strong>e: 1 mg/kg (<strong>on</strong>ly if a fridge is available)<br />

Lamuvid<strong>in</strong>e: 4 mg/kg<br />

Applicati<strong>on</strong><br />

Twice a day for 28 days<br />

If syrups are available, then more precise dos<strong>in</strong>g is possible. The exact dose can be<br />

calculated from the weight and/or surface area, and this should certa<strong>in</strong>ly be d<strong>on</strong>e for<br />

children less then 10kg.<br />

*D4T liquid requires refrigerati<strong>on</strong> so is not appropriate unless the carers have a fridge<br />

6.4.2 Tablet based regimen for children<br />

Syrups are the recommended regimens. However, <strong>in</strong> situati<strong>on</strong>s where syrups may not<br />

be available, regimens us<strong>in</strong>g tablets have been developed based <strong>on</strong> weight bands.<br />
