A Hello to Charms
There’s a home in Barrington Hills that provides more than the usual room and board to its
inhabitants. The “House of Noyes” (as its owner affectionately calls it) is home to a family whose
women are as creative as time and space allow. Mom Colleen offered us a look inside the home and at the
projects that keep the twenty-something children busy and inspired. And in business.
Amelia (“Amy”) drew sketches of the dresses worn by women during the Academy Awards while watching the TV show. Now, she looks to produce custom
sketches for brides and their bridesmaids. Can you say, “Great thank you cards”?
Megan (“Meggie”) creates one-of-a-kind jewelry that is sold in local trunk
shows. Megan learned about making jewelry at Barrington High School.
Colleen is married to Bill Noyes, son of the founder of the Noyes Animal
Hospital in Lake Barrington. (Who hasn’t taken their dog, cat or other family
pet to this important destination?) Colleen has always encouraged the kids to
use their home to be creative, even if that meant a constant flow of glitter on
the floors and a basement that is reminiscent of a Michael’s craft store. On the
day of our visit, the dining room table was covered with sketches.
Colleen and Bill bought the property in 1993 and began a labor of love to
preserve what worked, and improve and fix what didn’t. They are the third
owners of this 1910 dwelling that was built by John V. Walker, a local businessman
whose tree farm sign was found, and is safely kept in the hall closet.
After the Walkers, the property was owned by Bunny and Bill Horne, who
spent a reported 60 years in the home. There’s a legend that Ernest Hemingway
was a close friend of the Horne’s, and that he may have spent time there
at some point as a guest. If he had, perhaps his lingering creative genius helps
inspire the talented and artistic Noyes family.
