Paediatric<br />
Alcohol, antithyroid agents such as propylthiouracil or methimazole, barbiturate medicines for<br />
inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions), bromocriptine, doxercalciferol, furazolidone,<br />
linezolid, medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, medicines for colds, hay fever, or,<br />
allergies, medicines for diabetes, medicines for pain such as codeine, hydrocodone, meperidine,<br />
methadone, morphine, oxycodone, propoxyphene, and tramadol, MAO inhibitors, such as<br />
phenelzine , tranylcypromine , and isocarboxazid , and selegiline, medicines for mental<br />
depression, emotional problems, or psychotic disturbances, medicines for movement<br />
abnormalities as in Parkinson's disease, muscle relaxants, quinidine, procarbazine, sibutramine<br />
metoclopramide, atropine, dicyclomine, glycopyrrolate, hyoscyamine, or propantheline, some<br />
medicines for heart rhythm problems, terbinafine, verteporfin and vitamin A (retinol) creams<br />
or pills.<br />
Mechanism of Action<br />
Expectorant<br />
It is promoted for cough in respiratory allergic states. It reduces the viscocity and<br />
liquefies mucous. Lomohist relieves mucous congestion in throat and respiratory tract.<br />
Provides cooling and soothing effect to irritated throat and respiratory tract.<br />
Paediatric<br />
Dextromethgorphan has central cough suppressant action but it does not feature the<br />
untoward effects of the opioids: it doesnt have analgesic, sedating or constipating<br />
effects. It has sedative, anti-motion sickness, anti-emetic and anti-cholinergic effects.<br />
Promethazine competitively blocks histamine H1 receptors without blocking the<br />
secretion of histamine. Phenylephrine is an α-adrenergic receptor agonist and used<br />
primarily as a decongestant.<br />
Usual Dosage
Expectorant<br />
5-10 ml 2-3 times a day<br />
Paediatric<br />
Up to 5 years: 1 teaspoonful<br />
6-12 years : 2 teaspoonful three-four times a day<br />
