A Message from Your
Board of Governors....
New Fitness Center Facilities
Planned for Near Future.
Upon the addition of 125 net golf
memberships, or the equivalent in tennis
and social memberships, Arnold Palmer
Golf Management has agreed to renovate
and expand the Fitness Center. Plans will
be circulated to the membership as soon
as they are completed. Starting now, we
need everyone’s support to increase our
membership so that we may once again make
a desirable upgrade to our Club. Members
bringing in new members works---as we
learned two years ago when we reached
our membership goal and then extensively
renovated the South Course and installed
all new tennis lights. I’m confident we can
improve our Club again. The more energy
we put into recruiting new members now, the
quicker we can reach our goal. It is crucial
that everyone come out of the blocks at a
dead run if we are to meet our target in the
most efficient way. Call Cindy Jones in the
Membership Office with your referrals today.
Last month I made mention of the minutes
being on the website, and I apologize for
any inconvenience as we experienced some
website problems. Those problems have
been fixed, and I urge you to keep up with
the Board through the posting of the minutes.
As always, let us know if you have any
concerns. The Management, Staff and your
Board are anxious to make sure we do
everything possible to make the Club at
Sonterra an excellent experience for your
family.
Featured Members - Garry and Beverly Cardwell
Since joining the club on relocating to San Antonio from China in Feb 2006, Garry and Beverly Cardwell have been
active in several aspects of life at Sonterra. “We love the easy- going, laid back feel of this club. The members here
are friendly in the traditional south Texas style, and they like to have fun, same as we do” says Garry. “We enjoy the
contrast of the two great golf courses, and we make use of the fitness club too, although obviously not enough! The
“Vintners Club” within the club is one our favorite activities - this “club within the club” concept is a great way to
meet new folks who share your interests so come on out and get involved - there is something for everyone!”
Beverly adds, “ I’ve never had so many great times as golfing with the girls of Sonterra, especially the “Girls,
Giggles, and Golf “ group on Tuesdays - what a hoot! Hit the ball, kick it out of trouble if you like, keep score if you
want, or just pick it up and move on - nobody cares, we are out there for FUN! And to hopefully improve!”
“The staff is great - we appreciate their efforts to make us feel at ease and provide great service. It’s a comfortable
place to spend leisure time. “We have a great club here, and we’ve seen many improvements in our short tenure, so
come on out and enjoy it with us! The best is yet to come!”

Golf News-
Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
Now that summer is here and the weather has turned
warm, a few things happen. The grass grows more
quickly, we need to hydrate more while playing golf, we
need to be more aware of cart signs to prevent wear,
and we need to make sure to pair up when riding. Our fairways are “the best
I have seen in ten years” lets all do our parts to keep them that way.
It has been a busy and very good spring to date. The Ladies Classic Affair
was well attended and a huge success.
The Sunburst was also a great success and a special thank you to all the players
and all the ladies for volunteering to monitor the par threes.
Our first man verses women event took place this week with the women
dominating the competition. Many of you asked how to get involved with this
event, so we will create a much larger competition in couple of months and
have a sign up board in the golf shop.
POWERBALL
Powerball has frankly been a little disappointing! Our average is only about 40
players and we need to really build up this great mixer. For those of you that
are new Members, this is a four person scramble every Thursday evening and
a great way to meet new people, and make a little cash on the side.
UPCOMING EVENTS
SWGA every Wednesday. Ladies if you enjoy playing and are not in the SWGA,
please call the golf shop and join us on Wednesday mornings. The events are
always different formats and beat the heck out of working!
An apple and an orange are both fruit. Chevy and Honda are both car companies. Champion and Emerald are both greens grade Bermuda
grasses. Do you see where I’m going with this? That’s right, just because something is labeled the same as something else that does not make
them identical. Let’s take a look at the differences between Champion and Emerald grasses.
As you look at the two grasses the very first thing you notice is the size of the leaf blade. Emerald has a larger leaf blade than Champion does, because Emerald is a dwarf
Bermuda whereas Champion is an ultradwarf Bermuda. This means that Champion will have more leaf blades per square inch than Emerald, or a denser canopy. Well
then why didn’t we choose Champion for the south course? That brings up the second difference between these two grasses, growth habits. Emerald, though having
less leaf blades in an area, still produces a superb playing surface because it has a more vertical growth pattern. This means that all of the leaf blades of emerald will
grow upwards allowing for a smooth playing surface. Champion on the other hand has a more horizontal growth pattern that creates more of a matted playing surface
that needs to be vertically cut or verticut as it is known. Verticutting on Champion cuts the runners caused by it horizontal growth and stands the grass up to create its
smooth surface. Though they act differently both Champion and Emerald will produce a high
quality playing surfaces. There is still one more major difference that sets theses two grasses
apart but you will not see it as you look at the two grasses as one plays. This difference is in
the growth habits of the root systems. Champion will put on roots that will get down to four
and a half inches, which is very good, but Emerald can have roots in the seven to eight inch
range. So what does that matter? To put it simply the longer the roots the more drought
tolerant a grass will be. This means that Emerald can take a South Texas summer with less
water, which allows us to be better stewards of our aquifers.
Though there are many differences between Champion and Emerald grasses, both are
considered some of the best grasses for great playing golf course greens, and it is that
similarity that makes them excellent to putt on.
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER....SERGIO SALAZAR
I hope that you have had a chance to take part in our 25 year celebration here at the Club. For that past week we have had specials commemorating the opening of the Club at Sonterra back
in 1985. If you have not taken advantage of some of the specials you still have two weeks to take part and I encourage you to do so.
On July 16 we will be celebrating our 25 th anniversary of the Club at Sonterra at our Cocktails with the Council between 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. We hope that you can come out and attend this
“Member Only” event. For that reason you will not receive passes for guests to attend this month’s event in your monthly statement. We will be serving our usual complimentary cocktails and
food as well as a providing a live band and door prizes for 25 Members in attendance.
The last couple of years have been a little tough for Sonterra and very hard on the private club business as a whole. Many clubs across the nation have closed their doors or have been forced
to cut back dramatically. We have been a little more fortunate. Even though our Membership levels have declined we have still been able to renovate the South course and have installed new
lights at the tennis center to make it the best in town. We now have the opportunity to expand and completely renovate the fitness center if we can increase our Membership by 125 net Golf
Members or the equivalent in Tennis or Social Members. While it seems like a daunting task, Sonterra has done it before and we can do it again. If you know of anyone who you would like to
extend an invitation to join please let me know or bring them to the Club.
The last 25 years has been remarkable for Sonterra and the next 25 years will even be better. Thank you very much for being a Member and I hope to see you around the Club.

SONTERRA WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION
May was an exciting, busy month for our SWGA members. Marian Dyer took the honors at the Sonterra
Women’s Match Play Club Championship. Way to play, Marian! Susie Dillree and the Classic Affair Committee
did a spectacular job with the event this year. The three days were filled with fun and prizes. This year’s event
featured a “Run for the Roses” alternate swing competition for the flights. Mary Lucas and her partner, Lois
Pickart, took home the roses! SWGA is currently in first place in the Hill Country Stableford competition and
the Sonterra North and South teams are strong competitors in InterClub competition.
Our May STAR of the month was Haley Herschell and Jeanne Wilson was ACE of the Month.
Congratulations ladies!!! Is it any wonder that Hazel Stockard is everyone’s role model??? Her team won this
year’s Hazel Stockard ABC Scramble. A great way to celebrate her 96 th Birthday!!!
Our Tournament Co-Chairs, Marlene Bailey and Regina Turner continue to come up with new ideas and
this month was no exception. “Three Jills and a Jack” gave us an opportunity to partner with some of Sonterra’s
great men golfers. Kudo’s to all the brave men who joined us…we believe them when they say they had as
much fun as we did!!
Come join us on Wednesday and experience the fun and friendship that SWGA offers.
Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
Every month is busy at Sonterra but May was jam
packed from the 1 st to the 31 st . Our Member-Guest
tournament again exceeded all expectations. Thank you
to our committee members and participants for another
memorable event. The Club Doubles Championship
drew a larger number of entries than last year and provided everyone with
some great matches. Our Playday and Memorial Day Mixer brought out
over 100 players for each event - we were rockin! Intermingled in all of
this were USTA league matches, playoffs, graduations and the last day
of school activities. Then came June - leagues began, Race for the Cure
Playday, Mixers, Jr. Tournament, Jr. Tennis Camp - you get the picture.
BUSY! We have so much coming up so, again, the weekly e-mails and
tennis shop reminders we send out are essential to staying in the loop for
all upcoming events. Have a wonderful summer.
Fall Leagues - USTA and Club
It is hard to believe that I am writing this but it is almost here - USTA
leagues begin the end of August with teams forming and looking to fill
rosters. We have forms for those members interested in joining a fall team.
Club leagues end the week of August 9 th and registration for fall leagues
begins Monday, August 2 nd .
Ball Machine Club
Don’t let the summer go by without taking advantage of this wonderful
workout tool. This is the perfect time to make changes with your pro and
then hammer that information into a weapon with the ball machine. Take
a lesson with your pro to learn the many drills you can do on the ball
machine.
broken down by levels. This is good competitive singles play and a perfect
opportunity to get extra practice in before the new year.
NOTE FROM TAMMY - STAFF PROFESSIONAL
In May we had 12 juniors come out on a Sunday afternoon for a fun filled
playday. I will be organizing more of these playdays for our juniors so keep
an eye on your e-mails. Also, don’t forget our summer camps are now in
progress - see tennis shop for more information.
NOTE FROM TANA - LADIES LEAGUE COORDINATOR
LADIES COUNTRY CLUB CHALLENGE SPRING LEAGUE
This citywide league was hotly contested this spring! There were very
close finishes but our very own “Sonterra Hot Flashes”, captained by Sheila
Arthur, won the league. Congratulations to the whole team.
Congratulations to the Lone Star team of Kristine Southard, Veronica
Flores, Monica Bunn and Celina Garcia. They are headed to Dallas in
August to represent San Antonio at the State Tournament.
Also headed to Dallas is the Ladies 2.5 team of Adrianne Yantis, Michelle
Avila, Jennifer Wiedenhoefer, Terri Ybarra, Marlo Carr, Angie Keaton, Lisa
Koxlien, Margaret Gibbons, Lucy Landwehr, Celina Garcia and Veronica
Flores. Great job and best of luck at State!
