Where everyone’s welcome, nobody’s perfect, and anything is possible.
Today in Worship, December 20, 2009
This morning, Dr. Vic Pentz will preach at 8:45, 10 and 11:15 a.m., as we
continue our sermon series The Four Loves. The scripture for today’s sermon,
“Love in Dirty Overalls: Agape” is I Corinthians 13. Rev. Bryan Dunagan will be
preaching at the 11:05 service in The Gym.
TODAY IS THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Advent is a season of watchfulness. Advent candles help us keep watch for the light
of Christ. Each week the light increases as a new candle is lit to join the ones that have
already been illuminated until finally all the candles will be lit as we celebrate the birth
of Jesus Christ on Christmas Eve.
Connect With Our Community
Come down to “Take 10” in the Williams Center immediately after the service.
You’ll find coffee, lemonade and a cookie waiting.
FOR OUR GUESTS
• Take a tour of Peachtree every first Sunday, immediately following each service.
Meet in the Williams Center.
• Join Peachtree at “Exploring Peachtree”- An Orientation for New Members in
Room 2315, 10 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Next class: January 10.
You’ll get vital information about faith in Jesus Christ and expectations for members
of our community. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to
meet our Session and join Peachtree. For information or class registration contact
Dee Dee Lynch at (404) 842-5825, or e-mail dlynch@peachtreepres.org.
As we prepare to worship we ask that all cell phones and beepers be turned off and that food and
drinks remain outside the Sanctuary. Parents, we want this time of worship to be a meaningful
experience for you. If, during the service, your child needs attention, the Parlor (Room 3319) is
available to you. The room is equipped with comfortable furniture and closed-circuit TV so you
can continue to participate in the worship service while tending to the needs of your child.
Welcome to Worship!
One of God’s
greatest gifts to us is
the gift of friendship.
Amazingly, Jesus
chose to call us
friends rather than
servants. What
friends are you
especially thankful for
as you enter
worship today?
invites us to join our
mirrors an unseen
reality that
is happening all
Anthem Joy to the World............................................ arr. Ovid Young
Jason Hardy and Clay Hilley, soloists
Joy to the world! The Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing….
Joy to the world! The Savior reigns:
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy….
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love….
Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, we know what love is only because you
have first loved us. Your love for us was seen in the gift
of your Son. The full extent of your love was shown to
us in his death on the cross. And you have commanded
us to love one another in the same way that you have
loved us. We confess that we are not able to do this in
our own power. Forgive us for our self-seeking ways,
chasing love as a possession rather than releasing it as a
gift. Cleanse our hearts that we might fully receive your
love and then offer it to the world in Jesus’ name. Hear
us now as we continue our confession in silence . . .
Assurance of God’s Forgiveness
*Congregational Response
O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!
**Life of the Congregation
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.
Charles Wesley,
secretary for General
Oglethorpe in
the 1730’s, had a
personal conversion
experience that gave
him “rest in his soul”
and released in him
the gift of hymnwriting:
Wesley wrote
over 6,000 hymns
including Love
Divine.
Offertory
Love Divine All Loves Excelling......................arr. Mack Wilberg
The Chancel Choir
Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation; enter every trembling heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit, into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit; let us find that second rest.
Take away our bent to sinning; alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its Beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never, never more Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish, then, Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory, ‘til in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise!
As with “O Come
Let Us Adore Him,”
this hymn gives
us a picture of
universal worship.
Here the Angels’
song from on high
is echoed by the
mountains. All
creation points to
the creator and in
doing so worships
and gives glory to
God on high.
*Doxology (all singing)...............................................................o l d h u n d r e dt h
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
End of Year giving
As the year draws to a close, there are three ways to make your 2009 gifts
comply with I.R.S. regulations:
• Check – Your check must be dated and mailed by December 31, 2009, to be
included in your 2009 giving.
• Stock - The stock must be in the church’s account by December 31, 2009, to
be included in your 2009 giving. It is important that you initiate this transfer by
December 23rd to allow for the year end delay in transfers being completed.
To obtain transfer information and to notify the church of your gift, please contact
Mary Martin at 404-842-5841 or email her at mmartin@peachtreepres.org.
Remember, your stock gift does not come with your name attached so we do not
know the donor unless you let us know.
• Credit Card – Starting this year, you have the ability to pay your gift online with
a credit card. As with any gift, the transaction must be completed by December
31, 2009, to be included in your 2009 giving. You can do this by going to the
church’s web site, www.peachtreepres.org, and clicking on the “Give” button.
Just follow the steps. You will receive an email confirmation when your charge
Christmas Eve.
Tom Key, one of Atlanta’s best loved actors, will
bring the Christmas story to life in a thirty minute
interactive service designed especially for families
participate in the great story of Jesus’ birth as it
comes alive before your family. Visit the nativity
animals on the front lawn before or after the service.
Come and adore Him through instrumental music,
the singing of familiar carols, and Christmas
communion. Dr. Mark Crumpler will preach.
Sanctuary
See the little town of Bethlehem come alive through
drama, the singing of carols, and the telling of the
great story of Jesus’ birth. Join the angels, shepherds,
and wise men as we worship the baby Jesus. Visit
with nativity animals on the front lawn before or after
the service.
