Detroit Public Schools has never been more focused than the
present at making sure that no child is denied access to a highquality
education. We have embarked on a bold and ambitious
journey that I believe will return this city to its rightful place as the worldclass
leader in public education. When our schools succeed, our children
succeed, and our city succeeds.
I’ve witnessed firsthand the pride that shines in the faces of DPS
alumni, wherever you meet them, near and far. Their successes are a result
of their exceptional educational experiences earned right here in the City
of Detroit. Their achievements, and their affinity for their alma mater,
embolden us today to become the nation’s preeminent public education
turnaround story.
Working together, we can do this. These are more than Detroit Public
Schools; they are Detroit’s Public Schools. We must be bold in our thinking,
and we must join together to create a movement in our community
that never accepts mediocrity—a movement that isn’t afraid to do things
differently and to think outside the box.
We are truly transforming DPS. We are moving solidly in the right
direction. Careful financial planning and sacrifices across the board, while
maintaining a focus on teaching and learning, are paying dividends. We
will not waiver from focusing available resources on ensuring high standards
in a rigorous curriculum and creating accountability systems for
student achievement at all schools.
For all students, continuing and new, Detroit Public Schools this fall
offers new schools and new programs, and an Individual Learning Map
for each student. We are putting technology in the hands of students and
adults. For the first time, we are sending Netbook computers home with
all students in grades 8-12. We offer choices, including nine newly organized
self-governing high schools. And, of course, DPS offers transportation
options, healthy meals and, in partnership with a host of citizens and
agencies, we are critically focused on providing safe passages to school
each day.
To our families: Welcome back to YOUR schools. This year we are
focused on providing the highest qualified teacher in front of every child
in every classroom, starting with the opening day of school. From our
parents, we ask for your continued help in ensuring your child’s attendance
and preparedness, First Day, Every Day, All Day.
