Letter From the Mayor
The Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation
Department offers a wide variety of engaging,
family-friendly activities throughout the year.
From winter workshops and classes, to spring youth
sports and performing arts or our signature summer
programs, there’s something for everyone no matter
the season.
Community partnerships continue to play a significant
role in our growth and development. Thanks to the
generosity of our Oklahoma Lions Clubs, a new play
area at the Lions Children’s Park offers children
of all ages and ability levels the opportunity to play in a safe and accessible
environment. This state-of-the-art universal playground on the east side of Lake
Hefner was funded thanks to the efforts of individual Lions Club members and
local corporate partners. Volunteers from across the country participated in
assembling the new play structure, which provides a wheelchair accessible play
surface and shade structures, as well as interactive play features.
Visitors and tourists alike will enjoy strolling along the new trail in the Margaret
Annis Boys Arboretum in the Will Rogers Gardens. The arboretum features a
collection of diverse Oklahoma native and non-native trees which provide vibrant
color and cooling shade in the Spring through Fall months. The new trail, along
with enhanced signage, is being installed thanks to a gift from the Oklahoma City
Community Foundation in honor of the anniversary of Ms. Boys’ 100th birthday.
The Myriad Botanical Gardens is undergoing a transformation of its own thanks
to the 2007 General Obligation Bond and committed funds from the building of
the Devon Energy tower, part of the City’s Project180 initiative. A new children’s
garden, grand performance lawn, skating rink, restaurant, dog release area and
interactive water features will bring new life into this popular downtown attraction
that will be open throughout the year.
More positive changes are in store for 2011. Parks & Recreation Director Wendel
Whisenhunt and his staff work diligently to provide outdoor and indoor recreation
programs and facilities to enhance the quality of life to all our citizens and visitors.
No matter the time, no matter the season, there’s always something fun to do at
your local OKC Park!
