FROM THE DIOCESAN OFFICE OF DEACON AVILA
On January 12, 2010 an earthquake devastated Haiti (Haiti is the
poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of
Haitians are Catholic.) According to Catholic Relief Services
(CRS), the massive earthquake claimed hundreds and perhaps
thousands of casualties, and thousands more are feared dead or
injured. The Archbishop of Port Au Prince was among the dead.
The Diocese of Fresno and Catholic Charities, Diocese of
Fresno (the local CRS affiliate) are collecting funds for disaster
relief.
Those wishing to make an online donation should be directed to
the following Catholic Relief Services website: www.crs.org.
More information on how to donate can be found at the
diocesan website: www.dioceseoffresno.org.
Individual donations by check (but not cash) may be made out
to the “Diocese of Fresno.” The memo line on the check should
read: “Haiti Earthquake.” Mail the check to:
Diocese of Fresno
Accounting Department
1550 N. Fresno Street
Fresno, CA 93703-3788
We also encourage the offering of prayers and intentions for the
victims of these disasters, and those assisting in recovery and
relief operations.

Living Stewardship Now
“All things in this world are created out of God’s love, and they become a framework of gifts,
offered us so that we can know God more easily and make a return of God’s love more readily.”
KNOWING YOUR GIFTS
A few years ago, a parish held a Women’s Day of Reflection. Each participant was asked to compile a list of what
they perceived as their God-given talents. Many seemed to get stuck at this point. Some gazed out of the window,
others chewed on their pencils, and a few wrote things down and then vigorously crossed them out. One woman
whispered, “This is so difficult. I could have written much more if I’d been asked about my faults and failings.” Finally
time was up, and the facilitator asked everyone to share what they had written. She looked around the room and asked
someone to start things off. Rather reluctantly, Kerrin stood up. Many people there knew her well. She was deeply
involved in service to others throughout the community. She studied scripture with other parishioners, she belonged to
a prayer group, she helped organize annual parish retreats, and she ran a local food pantry. She said, “I really had to
think hard about this. I couldn’t come up with a list, because I don’t believe I’m all that special. But I do know that my
family says I’m a gentle person.” There was an audible gasp of astonishment that this wonderful woman could not see
her own gifts. Many of us have never stopped to think what our real talents are. Alternatively, we may think that we
know what they are but we believe that to acknowledge them is to show undue pride. Either of these approaches may
hold us back from the fullness of life to which we are called. It is part of the adult life of faith, however, to recognize
what skills and capabilities God has blessed us with and then decide, in gratitude, to use those gifts to help build God’s
kingdom here on earth. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 25
(americancatholic.org)
Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of one experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to
Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of
a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, who was
only a few years older. But he had acquired a zealot’s hatred of all
Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: “...entering house
after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over
for imprisonment” (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was “entered,”
possessed, all his energy harnessed to one goal—being a slave of
Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others
experience the one Savior.
One sentence determined his theology: “I am Jesus, whom you
are persecuting” (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with
people—the loving group of people Saul had been running down like
criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment of all he had
been blindly pursuing.
From then on, his only work was to “present everyone perfect in
Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of
his power working within me” (Colossians 1:28b-29). “For our gospel
did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy
Spirit and [with] much conviction” (1 Thessalonians 1:5a).
Paul’s life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the
message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried
with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the
world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christ’s
victory and someday to rise from the dead like him. Through this
risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them
completely new.
So Paul’s great message to the world was: You are saved
entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of
total, free, personal and loving commitment to Christ, a commitment
that then bears fruit in more “works” than the Law could ever
contemplate.
Comment:
Paul is undoubtedly hard to understand. His style often
reflects the rabbinical style of argument of his day, and often his
thought skips on mountaintops while we plod below. But perhaps our
problems are accentuated by the fact that so many beautiful jewels
have become part of the everyday coin in our Christian language (see
quote, below).
Quote:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not
seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing
but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

The most potent and acceptable prayer is the prayer that leaves the best effects. I don't mean it must
immediately fill the soul with desire . . . The best effects [are] those that are followed up by actions -
when the soul not only desires the honor of God, but really strives for it. St. Teresa of Avila
Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP)
We are a Christian non-profit organization that has been in the Fresno community for 27 years. Our program
attempts to facilitate voluntary mediations and restitution agreements between victims of juvenile crime and the young
offenders. Mediation empowers victims, giving them a voice in how the offense is to be rectified. Likewise, mediation is an
opportunity for the offender to grow in responsibility and empathy. We believe that crime not only violates the law but the
basic human relationships that bind us all. We feel that as Christians we are called to repair these broken relationships
through restorative justice.
We will be speaking at all Masses this weekend, January 23 & 24, we appreciate your support..
