EDITORIAL
Dear friends and colleagues,
We are delighted to present to you our new rights list for Spring 2014 and would like to invite
you to find out more about the latest titles as well as strong backlist titles of our imprints
Patmos – Thorbecke – Grünewald – Eschbach – Schwaben
Our list offers a wide range of titles, covering psychology, self-help, memoirs, parenting, spirituality,
religion and theology, as well as gift books and children’s books. While we have a rich
tradition in publishing religious children’s books, we have recently ventured into publishing
general children’s books, including fiction, encouraging children to become more aware of values
and what really matters in life.
Our imprint Thorbecke specializes in books on cookery, lifestyle and gardening, on the one
hand, as well as books on history and cultural history, on the other hand.
To find out more about our authors and titles, please visit our foreign rights website at
www.verlagsgruppe-patmos.de/foreign_rights.php. A click on the logo of the respective imprint
on the right-hand side will take you to the specific rights section of each imprint, for example,
www.patmos.de/foreign_rights.php for titles published by our imprint Patmos.
Using the navigation bar on the left-hand side, you can select individual titles from different
categories. You will then be able to view English summaries, key selling points, up-to-date information
on rights sold as well as biographies of our authors, illustrators and photographers.
Also, there are information sheets, synopses and sample translations available for download.
A detailed search function will help you find the information you need even faster!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to receive advance materials, reading copies
or any further information on our titles and upcoming co-editions.
We would also be delighted to discuss our list with you at the London Book Fair (IRC, 28g).
Tjerk Ridder & Peter Bijl
In Search of a Trailer Hitch!
You Need Others to Keep You Going
ISBN: 978-3-8436-0422-2 | Patmos | Softcover with flaps | 160 pages
with numerous photographs and a DVD with songs and video clips |
22 × 20.5 cm | € 19.99
An inspiring multimedia project
The Dutch and their trailers are a typical image. But Tjerk Ridder and
Peter Bijl do the cliché one better. Together with their dachshund Dachs,
they hitchhike all across Europe for three months with a camping trailer –
but without a car! Along their route from Utrecht to Istanbul, they are
completely dependent on other people: car drivers who pull them for a
distance, rest stop owners who donate a hot shower or a warm croissant.
The book is full of inspiring stories and photos, warmhearted and slightly
crazy, a gem to savor, make you smile, and inspire your own dreams.
Bestselling title on autism and love – an incredible story
Peter Schmidt is a person with autism. He cannot understand others’ feel-elings,
nor can he interpret their facial expressions. For him, small talk re-
presents a balancing act, a choice of which foot to put in his mouth. All this
doesn’t exactly make him Prince Charming, but he is nevertheless happily
married with children. In his remarkable autobiography, Schmidt recounts
how he overcame many obstacles and detours to find love – a work
of narrative art and a testament to the diversity of existence, told by an
endearing outsider.
ISBN: 978-3-8436-0390-4 | Patmos | Hardback with jacket | 232 pages with
numerous photographs | 14 × 22 cm | € 19.99
The new book from the bestselling author
Peter is a strange boy. When he is happy, he flaps his arms like a bird. And at
home he studies flecks of light on the wall for hours, because it emits such glee-
ful sounds. Peter Schmidt’s recollections of his childhood with Asperger’s syndrome
are one of a kind. He remembers not only the first years of his life, but
even the hour of his birth! For these unusual perceptions, he has created his
own language, which is fascinating and surprisingly plausible. This book is a
pleasure to read and will surprise you!
The scent of fabric softener, the splashing of the water in the drums: Freddy
Leck loves his washing machines – and his customers! Whether they
are
professors, grandmas or cowboys stranded in the big city, everyone is welcome
in Freddy Leck’s laundromat. The bizarre stories Freddy shares in his
book, in a comic yet loving way, actually took place (or nearly so) in the
laundromat.
Freddy Leck, whose real name is Dirk
Martens, is a cult laundromat owner in the
Moabit section of Berlin. On the side, the
actor can be seen in many television films,
usually playing the villain.
www.freddy-leck-sein-waschsalon.de
But Leck wasn’t always the serious service provider that we get to know
through these stories. In flashbacks he describes his restless life full of extremes,
including crashes, disastrous detours and a dramatic love that completely
threw him off track. Until he found happiness in laundry. This book
is as funny and sad as life itself.
An authentic report of a near-death experience and life thereafter
Bang! Hurtled out into another dimension. When the pain became unbearable,
Sabine Mehne left her body. Suddenly she saw herself from above, lying in
a hospital bed. She was bathed in a healing light and felt infinitely free. But no
one understood what had happened to her. After her recovery she led a kind of
double life: outwardly she tried to function and fulfill her role as the mother of
three children. But secretly she longed to return to that all-encompassing
light – and learned to move back and forth between the worlds.
Touching and absorbing story of a remarkable healing
She lives in the Canadian wilderness, follows the trail of the coastal wolves,
and spends an entire afternoon in the midst of a pack of wild wolves – a
true sensation. For wildlife biologist Gudrun Pflüger, her encounters with
wolves provide an inexhaustible source of optimism and trust. When diagnosed
with an aggressive brain tumor, Pflüger was told she had eighteen
months left to live. Taking the wolf – a true “endurance athlete” – as her
model, she trusts in her own powers of self-healing and overcomes her illness.
This is a touching, absorbing story that imparts much more than just
a wilderness adventure. It is a testament to the healing power of nature.
A fascinating story about achieving the impossible
Andy Holzer cannot see the mountains. But this blind mountaineer can still
take everything in, as he has proven in his expeditions to the world’s highest
mountain peaks. His senses of hearing, smell, taste and touch provide him with
enough information to assemble a precise image of the world. He overcomes
obstacles created by his disability through mental strength and unbridled optimism
that is grounded in his trust in his family, his friends and himself. Andy
Holzer serves as a powerful example that it is possible to transform obstacles
into opportunities.
“My greatest desire is to go to school and have two hours of math. It’s really
weird that now I long to do things I used to hate.” Sevval is 16 and seriously
ill, like all the children and teenagers who have their say in this special
book. In many ways, of course, they are perfectly normal kids and teenagers.
But their illnesses and living in a kind of parallel world make them
survival artists, big and small, who with reality, imagination and humor,
ponder life with everything that it entails: questions about meaning, hopes
and doubts, thoughts about God and ghosts, parties in heaven, special moments
of happiness – or what it is like to have the same hairstyle as your
grandpa when you’re 11 years old …
Kathrin Feldhaus studied cultural
studies and aesthetic practice with an emphasis
on theater and the fine arts. From
2007 to 2011 she was head of marketing for
a theater in southern Germany. Since that
time she has worked as a freelance artistic
project manager.
Margarethe Mehring-Fuchs studied
social education and cultural management.
She has initiated numerous cultural
projects with youth from different cultures
of origin, some of them prize-winning. She
is also involved with documentary film
and theater productions.
from the depths of the soul. Experienced psychotherapist Renate Daniel demonstrates
DAS TIER
ALS SYMBOL
in Träumen, Mythen
und Märchen
Donald Duck, the hellhound Cerberus, Puss-in-Boots – animals play an
important role in many stories, myths and fairy tales. Since the earliest
times, experiences with animals have impacted the human psyche. Images
such as the proud eagle or the cunning snake are part of the collective conscious
and subconscious of humanity. At the same time, they determine the
experience of individuals, and can play an important role in the psychotherapeutic
process, for example as symbols in dreams.
Helen I. Bachmann provides clear explanations of various animals – including
the dog, cat, cow, bear and bees – and their significance for people.
By means of myths, fairy tales and examples of dreams she demonstrates
both how deeply animal symbols have influenced human history, and the
impact they can have on the psychological development of individuals.
Helen I. Bachmann is a Jungian analyst
who holds a doctorate in psychology and
teaches psychoanalysis at the C. G. Jung
Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. After having
her own practice for many years, today
she is primarily involved with lectures and
seminars for students. She lives in Zurich,
Switzerland, and Umbria, Italy.
shows what sensible prevention – starting with sensitive sex education – looks like. And
she concretely describes what parents and educators can do to make children strong and
thereby protect them from sexual abuse.
What Francis of Assisi would have to say to Pope Francis
What would the saint from Assisi advise the new pope, who, with his selection of a name,
made the great saint the measure of his papacy? Francis of Assisi is delighted by this new
beginning and encourages the pope to address the necessary steps of repentance and
change. He refers to the Gospel and points out where the Church has departed from Jesus’s
message. His letters thus encourage not only the new pope, but all believers, to initiate
the long overdue reform of the Church with new confidence.
Even during his lifetime, Meister Eckhart (1260–1328) already had a singular reputation.
And today his sermons and theological writings continue to resonate with a spiritual
Dietmar Mieth has collected and commentated on Meister Eckhart’s most important
writings in this book. In an extensive introduction he explores Eckhart’s life, introduces
the unique features and timeliness of his thought, and offers new historical information.
It might seem absurd that Islam, of all things, has something to contribute
to the image of an emancipated woman. In fact, it is considered one of the
last bastions of the suppression and degradation of women.
Khola Maryam Hübsch defends herself against this view of Islam, which
she considers false and shortsighted. She cleverly holds a mirror to our society:
how free and equal are women really in our highly sexualized society?
Could the wearing of a headscarf – when it is done voluntarily – even be a
symbol of female emancipation and freedom? And couldn’t a modern, Islamic
image of women also have a positive effect on the relationship between
the sexes and chances for successful partnerships?
Khola Maryam Hübsch studied publicity,
psychology and German studies in
Mainz, Germany. She regularly lectures
and teaches courses about Islam and writes
for German newspapers and Muslim magazines
about Islam and tolerance, Islam
A plea for a contemporary understanding of the Eucharist
In our day and age, can the Eucharist be understood as anyact
of worship? What people associate with the central celebration
of the Catholic church today moves between these two
poles, which is not very
thing other than a simple meal? Or is it, in fact, a magical
helpful.
In this book, Urs Baumann shines light on biblical, historical
and current aspects of sacrifice and eating, ordination and
consecration. His reflections introduce a perspective of how
the Eucharist can be understood and celebrated appropriately
in our time. This is a bold book that frees the central celebraas
from aspects of priestly power – thus bringing what is truly
essential to the center of our attention
tion of the Church from theological exaggerations as well
again.
Magie
Eucharistieverständnis
Intellectually and existentially challenging
Tradition has conceived of Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a
unity of three individuals who love each other. In this harmonious
depiction, God is considered to be constant, incapable
of suffering, and in the end, not impacted by human beings
and history. But can this image of God still be meaningful in
our broken and increasingly divided world?
In his analysis, Ottmar Fuchs subjects the harmonious conception
of the Trinity familiar from tradition to pointed critique
and develops other approaches to thinking about a Trinitarian
understanding, sensitive to suffering, of the God who
as Jesus Christ radically exposed himself to the world.
The Council of Constance (1414–1418) is among the most important councils
in church history. It was not only the first council to take place on German
soil, but also the only one that was able to successfully end a schism in
the church, through the election of Pope Martin V. Even at the time, people
knew that the Constantine was the biggest, longest and most significant
synod of the Middle Ages. The results of the council continue to have impact
in many areas even today.
Nowadays, however, the councils are viewed not only from the perspective
of theology or church politics, but also understood in their role as significant
international political junctions that additionally served as forums for
the exchange of ideas, public events, the origination of knowledge and centers
of communication.
Dr. Thomas Martin Buck has been a
professor of History and Didactics (specializing
in the Middle Ages) at the University
of Education in Freiburg, Germany,
since 2006.
Dr. Herbert Kraume used to be a history
teacher. He now works as a textbook
author and has written several titles about
late medieval history and the revolution of
1848/49.
Memories of an old, forgotten garden
“It still exists, the old garden of my childhood, and it will continue to exist, even after my
days on earth are through. It was the last narrow piece of property in an abandoned vineyard,
high above the city, with a view of the cemetery on the opposite side of the valley.
Behind it began the forest, with its tall beech and oak trees that were already reaching out
with their knotty roots to reclaim it …”
Climate change is bringing about longer periods of drought in which water
is becoming a luxury. In the wake of urban gardening, it is also becoming
clear that water from pipes should not be taken for granted. In her book,
Dorothée Waechter addresses the intelligent use of water and skillful planning
with plants that require little water or are able to survive dry periods.
Landscape engineer Dorothée Waechter
is a specialized journalist for various
gardening magazines and also appears on
television as a gardening expert.
It turns out that Gardening (Almost) Without Watering is not so difficult.
The secret, among other things, includes thorough preparation of the soil,
selection of appropriate plants and the correct planting methods. Watering
conservatively is more important today than ever. And even if you are not
forced to ration water, it makes sense to consciously care for your plants
with consideration for the world’s resources.
