A. The Gryphon Explains His Method<br />

"So you sees I was right," said the Gryphon, "it was just her<br />

fancy, that's all!<br />

"They fancies lots of things around here," continued the<br />

Gryphon. "For example, at the trial they fancied I stole them tarts,<br />

but I never stole no tarts, they only fancied I did!"<br />

"I don't understand," said <strong>Alice</strong>. "You were found guilty, and the<br />

King sentenced you. How is it you're not in prison?"<br />

"They don't put no peoples in prison around here," said the<br />

Gryphon, chuckling, "they only fancies they does!"<br />

<strong>Alice</strong> puzzled a bit over this queer state of affairs.<br />

"Anyway," continued the Gryphon, "those was nice puzzles you<br />

solved at them there trials! Now, do you know what kind of puzzles<br />

I takes a fancy to?"<br />

"No," said <strong>Alice</strong>, "what kind do you like?"<br />

"Why, the puzzling kind!" he answered.<br />

"Well, of course!" said <strong>Alice</strong>. "Aren't puzzles usually puzzling?"<br />

"Of course not!" The Gryphon laughed. "Peoples only fancies<br />

they is!"<br />

"Well, then," asked <strong>Alice</strong>, "what would you call a puzzling puzzle?"<br />

"Why, the kind peoples fights over," replied the Gryphon. "When<br />

peoples fights, then the fun really begins!"<br />

"Why would people fight over a puzzle?" asked <strong>Alice</strong>.<br />
