predicted correctly; so you answered the last question right, and<br />

that's why you pass. (Of course, both reasonings are circular, but<br />

neither one is any worse than the other!)<br />

On the other hand, if <strong>Alice</strong> answered no, then the Queen could<br />

neither pass her nor fail her. If the Queen passed her, then <strong>Alice</strong><br />

did not predict correctly, and having given the wrong answer, by all<br />

rights she should have failed! If the Queen failed her, then <strong>Alice</strong><br />

predicted correctly, and having given the right answer, she should<br />

have passed! So the Queen could neither pass her nor fail her.<br />

As I said, <strong>Alice</strong> was more interested in not failing than in passing;<br />

hence she answered, "No," and this, indeed, completely stymied the<br />

Queen.<br />

Chapter 7<br />

ROUND ONE If the speaker were telling the truth, then he<br />

would be Tweedledum and he would be carrying a black card, but<br />

he cannot be speaking the truth and also carry a black card.<br />

Therefore, he must be lying. This means that his card really is<br />

black, and since his statement was false, he is not really Tweedledum<br />

carrying a black card; so he is Tweedledee carrying a black<br />

card.<br />

ROUND TWO The speaker asserts that he is not Tweedledum<br />

carrying a red card. His assertion must be true, for if he were<br />

Tweedledum carrying a red card, then, since his card is red, he<br />

couldn't lie and say that he is not Tweedledum carrying a red card.<br />

So it is true that he is not Tweedledum carrying a red card. Since his<br />

statement is true, then he must in fact be carrying a red card. But<br />
