The Red King's Theory<br />

At this point <strong>Alice</strong>'s conversation with Humpty Dumpty was<br />

interrupted by a strange rumbling sound in the distance—something<br />

like the puffing of a steam engine.<br />

"What is that?" asked <strong>Alice</strong>, in some alarm.<br />

"Oh, that's only the Red King snoring," replied Humpty Dumpty.<br />

"You should go have a look at him—he's quite a sight!"<br />

"Oh, yes," said <strong>Alice</strong>, remembering her very first journey into the<br />

Looking-Glass, "I've seen him asleep once before; I was with<br />

Tweedledum and Tweedledee at the time, and they told me that the<br />

Red King was dreaming of me and that I was nothing more than a<br />

thing in his dream, and if he were to awaken, I wouldn't exist<br />

anymore. Now, wasn't that a foolish thing to have said?"<br />

"Why don't you try waking him and find out?" replied Humpty<br />

Dumpty.<br />
