The Red King's Theory
At this point Alice's conversation with Humpty Dumpty was
interrupted by a strange rumbling sound in the distance—something
like the puffing of a steam engine.
"What is that?" asked Alice, in some alarm.
"Oh, that's only the Red King snoring," replied Humpty Dumpty.
"You should go have a look at him—he's quite a sight!"
"Oh, yes," said Alice, remembering her very first journey into the
Looking-Glass, "I've seen him asleep once before; I was with
Tweedledum and Tweedledee at the time, and they told me that the
Red King was dreaming of me and that I was nothing more than a
thing in his dream, and if he were to awaken, I wouldn't exist
anymore. Now, wasn't that a foolish thing to have said?"
"Why don't you try waking him and find out?" replied Humpty
Dumpty.
