Looking-Glass Logic
"Question Ten—Suppose he believes that Alice will not reach the
eighth square without becoming a queen. Suppose he also believes
that Alice will reach the eighth square. Does he believe that Alice
will become a queen, or doesn't he?"
"I guess he does," replied Alice, "doesn't he?"
"Well," said Humpty Dumpty, laughing, "the last question was
really kind of unfair, so I don't expect you to get it."
"More unfair than the other questions?" asked Alice.
"Decidedly," he replied, "the other questions were all perfectly
fair."
"I find them all equally confusing!" replied Alice, "I still don't
understand this Looking-Glass logic!"
Now, if you, like Alice, are confused at this point, I can hardly
blame you! Yet the key to the whole mystery is almost laughably
simple. Rather than give a solution section to this chapter, I will
incorporate the solutions in the dialogue which now follows.
