ALICE IN PUZZLE-LAND<br />

"Ah, that is for you to figure out!" replied the Queen. "That is<br />

your problem. Now, Tweedledum realizes that if he loses the bet,<br />

then he will have the same number of rattles as Tweedledee, but if<br />

he wins the bet, then he will have twice as many rattles as<br />

Tweedledee. The question is, How many rattles does each one<br />

have?"<br />

Now this problem is normally solved using algebra, but <strong>Alice</strong><br />

knew no algebra. Fortunately, however, she remembered the<br />

lessons she had learned from the Gryphon, so she was able to get<br />

the answer. What is the answer?<br />

HOW MANY BROTHERS AND SISTERS? "Here's another," said<br />

the Red Queen. "A little girl named <strong>Alice</strong> had a brother named<br />

Tony—"<br />

"I don't have a brother named Tony," interrupted <strong>Alice</strong>.<br />

"I wasn't talking about you," the Red Queen replied sharply. "I<br />

was talking about another <strong>Alice</strong>!"<br />

"Oh!" replied <strong>Alice</strong>.<br />

"And I wish you wouldn't keep interrupting!" continued the<br />

Queen. "Anyway, <strong>Alice</strong> and Tony had other brothers and sisters."<br />

"Just a minute," interrupted <strong>Alice</strong> (not the <strong>Alice</strong> in the Looking-<br />

Glass, but the <strong>Alice</strong> at the party), "Tony and I don't have any other<br />

brothers or sisters!"<br />

"The Red Queen wasn't talking about you," I replied, "but about<br />

still another <strong>Alice</strong>!"<br />

"Oh!" replied <strong>Alice</strong>.<br />

"Now," continued the Red Queen, "Tony has as many brothers as<br />

sisters. <strong>Alice</strong> has twice as many brothers as sisters. How many boys<br />

and how many girls are in the family?"<br />

<strong>Alice</strong> solved this one.<br />

HOW MANY WERE WRONG? "Here is one," said the White<br />

Queen, "and it happens to be a true story. I once had to post four<br />
