"Yes," replied <strong>Alice</strong>, who was keeping count.<br />

"Then the coach went on, made another stop, and three passengers<br />

got off. Are you following?"<br />

"Yes," said <strong>Alice</strong>, who was still faithfully keeping count.<br />

"Then the coach went on, made another stop, and two passengers<br />

got off and two passengers got on."<br />

"That's the same as if the coach hadn't stopped at all!" exclaimed<br />

<strong>Alice</strong>.<br />

"I wish you wouldn't keep interrupting me!" exclaimed the Red<br />

Queen. "It only puts me out!"<br />

"I haven't kept interrupting you," replied <strong>Alice</strong> (who is very<br />

logical). "I've interrupted you only once, and one must interrupt<br />

someone at least twice before he can be said to keep interrupting<br />

him."<br />

"True," replied the Queen, "but I'm giving this examination,<br />

child, not you!<br />

"Anyway," continued the Queen, "the coach went on, made<br />

another stop, and three people got off and five got on. Are you still<br />

keeping count?"<br />

"Yes, I am," replied <strong>Alice</strong>.<br />

"Then the coach arrived in Harwich and all the passengers got<br />

off. How many times did the coach stop?"<br />
