The Twelfth Question
Tony's birthday was later in the summer, and my wife and I
got back in time for the party.
"How about some more Alice in Wonderland puzzles?" asked
Alice.
"How about Alice in the Looking-Glass?" I asked.
"Either is fine with me!" replied Alice.
The children were all amenable to any more Alice puzzles, so I
told them the following stories.
"I do think it high time the child takes another examination
don't you?" the Red Queen asked the White Queen.
"Absolutely!" replied the White Queen.
Alice could not see just why she should have to take another
examination, nor did she particularly like the idea, yet she made no
reply.
"Can you count?" asked the Red Queen.
"Why, of course!" replied Alice.
"Very well then, let's see if you can really count. Are you ready?"
"I'm ready," said Alice.
"A stagecoach went from London to Harwich and started out
with six passengers. Do you think you can remember that?"
"Of course I can remember that," replied Alice. "There's not
much to remember!"
"Very well," replied the Queen, "the coach made a stop and two
passengers got off and four passengers got on. Got that?"
