ALICE IN PUZZLE-LAND
IS THIS PUZZLE SAD? "What was so sad about that?" asked
Alice.
"It's a long way to have to walk to school every morning!" replied
the Mock Turtle.
"Aw, it probably did him good!" said the Gryphon. "That's the
trouble with children nowadays—they're too lazy!"
"Here's another sad puzzle," said the Mock Turtle. "An American
art dealer one day sold two paintings for nine hundred and ninety
dollars each. On one he made a ten percent profit and on the other
he took a ten percent loss. 'That means I broke even today,' he said
to himself.
"Is there anything sad about this puzzle?"
C. The Gryphon's Prize Puzzle
"Now let me tell you both a puzzle," said the Gryphon. "It's my
prize puzzle!"
"Is it very sad?" asked the Mock Turtle.
"No, it's not one bit sad!" said the Gryphon. "It's just clever, that's
all!"
