HOW MUCH WATER WAS SPILLED? "What did finally happen
to these men?" Alice asked a bit anxiously after having solved the
puzzle.
"Oh, they were all finally rescued," replied the Mock Turtle.
"Then what's so sad about the story?" asked Alice.
"Just think," said the Mock Turtle, "it could have happened that
they weren't rescued!"
"Oh," said the Gryphon, "so in other words it could have been a
sad story, but actually it wasn't!"
"It's a very sad story!" said the Mock Turtle, sobbing again.
"Come on, tell us another!" said the Gryphon.
"Well," said the Mock Turtle, "this time a shipwrecked crew had
just enough water to last thirteen days, allowing each man one quart
a day. On the fifth day, some water was accidentally spilled, and one
man died on the same day. The water then lasted just the expected
time. How much water was spilled?"
WHEN WILL HE GET OUT OF PRISON? "That was a sad one,"
Alice admitted, after she had solved the puzzle, "and it was also very
interesting! Do you have another?"
