SABS/NRCS tightens the screws on noncompliant electrical products
SHREDDERS
The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is taking tough action to stamp out
noncompliant electrical products. At least 23 importers and manufactures of unsafe electrical
products were netted in an investigation. Safe of the goods was in some instances restricted,
while certain goods were confiscated and destroyed.
Fines were imposed and some offenders even imprisoned. According to Deloittes, the SABS is
considering publishing the names of the guilty parties once it has completed its investigations.
The intention is to remove all noncompliant products from the market within three months.
Noncompliant goods include, stoves, rice cookers, scales, hair clippers, steam irons, lighting
equipment, adaptors, plugs, switches, flexible cords and extension sets. Some manufacturers
had the SABS quality certification mark on their noncompliant products. If the noncompliance
is of a minor nature and the product presents no risk to the public, the manufacturer or importer
can apply for a temporary permit for 3 months.
