Office Detention • Students are expected to behave in a cooperative and respectful manner in all of their classes. Students who are acting in a rude and uncooperative manner will be removed from the classroom and sent to their respective house office. • Any time a student is referred to the administration for disciplinary action, the situation will be investigated thoroughly. One option open to the Housemaster is to assign an office detention. • If a student is unable to serve the detention on the original date, the office will assign an alternate afternoon session, which must be served as assigned. • If a student is absent from school the day of an assigned detention that detention must be served on the first day the student returns to school after the absence. • Students must bring study materials and remain occupied during office detention. • Offenses for which office detention may be assigned include: 1. First class cut in any subject area and first study hall cut in each semester. 2. Repeated class disruption after teacher detention has failed to solve the problem. 3. Misbehavior in the “common areas” of the school: cafeteria, Media Center, corridors and school grounds, including the parking lot. 4. Presence in an unauthorized area (Off Limits) as determined by an administrator. 5. Loitering on school property after school hours Suspension Policy • All students must be afforded Due Process whenever deprived of their education from regular classroom instruction or from other school activities through suspension. • The following steps will be taken upon receiving a complaint or information of possible student misconduct: 1. The administrator in charge will fully investigate the matter. 2. The student will be told the evidence against him or her and then be given an opportunity to fully explain his/her side of the story. 3. A post-investigation conference with the student and his/her parents and the administrator shall be held if a dispute exists. 4. If there is evidence that the student has violated a specific published standard of conduct, then the administrator in charge may suspend a student by assigning an In-School Suspension or an Out-of-School Suspension. A. In-School Suspension • The In-School Suspension Program is designed to allow students to continue their academic class work in school and still be suspended for violations of the discipline code. • During the day prior to an assigned In-School Suspension, the student must obtain from all of his/her teachers assignments that he or she can complete on his or her own. An appropriate form will be provided for this. The student must bring this form, along with all other necessary books and materials, to the ISS room at 11:35 AM on the day that the In-School Suspension has been assigned. • Students complying with the rules and regulations pertaining to In- School Suspension receive attendance credit in each of their academic classes. Therefore, adherence to the rules of the In-School Suspension room allows the student to fulfill the attendance requirement in each of his/her classes for that day. • The main objective is to penalize poor conduct and at the same time to allow the student to succeed academically. • In any given semester (1/2 year) a student may accumulate no more than three (3) In-School Suspensions. Parents will be notified in writing for each assignment stating the reason(s) for the assignment. Any subsequent offense (s) will result in an assignment of a Saturday 62
School Suspension or a three-day Out of School Suspension. Decisions for all suspensions will be based on, in the opinion of the school administration, the best interest of the student’s growth and educational development. • On the third In-School Suspension assignment, a face-to-face parent conference with the respective Housemaster will be mandatory. In addition, parents will be notified in writing that assignments to Saturday School Suspensions will result for each subsequent offense during that semester, 63
