Academic Support Programs ACES Program: Alternative Center for Educational Success The ACES Program provides academic and behavioral support for regular and special education students in grades 9 and 10. This transitional program, complete with a behavioral modification system, guides students in an attempt to reenter regular education classes in future years. ACES stresses academic remediation, behavioral modification and self-esteem building. AIMS Program: Alternative Instruction Makes Success The AIMS Program is designed to provide maximum remediation in all academic subject areas. This program, complete with a behavioral modification system, provides a self-contained English Language Arts and mathematics environment with a co-teaching model. Students are integrated into regular classes, including alternative education offerings, whenever possible. Alternative Education Program The Alternative High School provides academic, social and emotional support for regular and special education students in grades 10-12. A highly structured and disciplined classroom environment, complete with a well tested behavioral modification system, the program provides students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma outside of the regular education classroom. ARCHER Program: Achievement, Reinforcement, Cooperation, Helping Each other Reach The ARCHER Program provides academic, social, and emotional support for special education students in grades 9-12. Students typically attend alternative and regular education classes while utilizing the ARCHER classroom for counseling and resource services. ELL Program: English Language Learners Students who do not speak English or whose native language is not English receive instruction that is specifically designed to assist them both in learning English and in learning subject matter content. The students are referred to as limited English proficient (LEP) and the program is for English Language Learners (ELL). Braintree High School teachers work closely with the ELL teacher to offer these students every assistance in mastering the English language. Braintree High School benefits from the rich cultural mix of its student population. Hearing Impaired Special assistance is provided for students who have been evaluated and found in need of services for hearing impairment. This assistance, provided by a trained specialist, is designed to provide the student with acquisition of communication skills as well as developing techniques for maximum use of hearing ability. Home Instruction Students who are unable to attend school due to a medical disability are provided with home instruction after receipt of a physician’s statement. In addition to home instruction, an in-school tutorial program is available for students who can attend mainstream classes on a partial schedule. These students also work in the tutoring room to complete their academic requirements. This program also reintegrates some students into a full schedule after a prolonged absence. Tutors utilize the student’s home, school, and a Braintree High School classroom. 24

Learning Center A comprehensive public high school such as Braintree High School must make every effort to meet the mandates of State Law to educate special needs students in the least restrictive setting while maximizing their potential. Since all students must be educated in the mainstream, the Learning Center provides support supplementary/remedial resources for both students and faculty members to enhance the student’s academic performance. Students are scheduled to come to the Learning Center on a regular basis during unassigned periods. Faculty members are encouraged to send work to the Learning Center for students who are falling behind or who need supplemental instruction. Faculty members are also invited to utilize the reference materials available in the Learning Center. METCO: Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity The METCO Program is a state-funded program that provides an opportunity for urban minority students to attend suburban schools. There are students in Grades 9-12 who are enrolled in the METCO Program at BHS. PMI: PM Instruction The PMI program provides academic opportunities for those students who were unable to achieve success during the regular school day. Designed to mirror an evening school, this program offers specific academic courses on particular days. Each class is co-taught and special education resource assistance is also available daily. Project PROVE Project PROVE is a federally and locally funded secondary level program for educationally handicapped students. Project PROVE offers students pre-occupational and pre-vocational experiences as well as daily living skills. The program provides work-simulated experiences through specially designed training stations. The project offers on-the-job experiences at selected workstations in the school complex and in the community. School-To-Work Program The School-to-Work Program is a collaboration between Braintree area businesses and Braintree High School. This program is offered through the Special Needs Department. Students are chosen to participate in an internship during the school day and receive academic instruction in resource classes. Speech and Language Speech and language services are provided for students whose speech or hearing handicaps prevent them from achieving their academic potential. Visually Impaired A trained specialist provides students who are partially sighted and legally blind assistance in use of visual skills or Braille techniques. This assistance is provided to assist the student in maintaining his/her performance in subject matter classes. Evaluation and Diagnostic services are available for students under chapter 766 25
