Homework Policy (Continued)
Completion of assigned homework is required of all students in the Braintree Public
Schools. Students are assigned homework as outlined in the Homework Policy. Failure to
comply with this regulation will result in the following:
1. A teacher-student conference is held to discuss the nature of the issues regarding
homework.
2. In the event the student continues to come unprepared to class, a parent-teacher
conference will be held. This may be in the form of a face-to-face meeting or a
phone conference.
3. If lack of preparation continues, then the teacher should seek the support of the
guidance counselor and possible intervention by the Housemaster.
Guidelines for Students:
1. Students should understand assignments clearly before leaving class.
2. Students are to record the directions for homework in an assignment notebook.
3. Students are required to hand in completed assignments on time.
4. Students are responsible for any work missed due to absence from class.
5. Students should realize that homework will be part of their grade.
6. Students are responsible for bringing home the proper materials.
7. Students are to budget time properly for long-term assignments.
8. Students are always to do their best work.
Guidelines for Parents:
1. Parents shall be familiar with, and support, the philosophy and
guidelines of the approved Homework Policy.
2. Parents should provide the student with a time and place to do the homework
assignment(s).
3. Parents should check the student assignment notebook.
4. Parents should take an active part in supervision of the student completing the
assignment(s).
5. Parents should oversee long-term assignments and assist students in learning
to budget time accordingly.
6. Parents should limit television and telephone interruption.
7. Parents should assist, but not do, the work.
8. Parents should contact the teacher in the event of questions or concerns.
Guidelines for Teachers:
1. Homework is to be in keeping with the Objectives of Homework assignments.
2. Homework is to be given on a regular basis.
3. Assignments are to be clearly understood by the students.
4. Specific homework policies/practices of teachers are to be submitted to the
Headmaster and clearly communicated to students and parents.
5. Teachers are to require that every student have a daily/weekly assignment
agenda book.
6. Homework may take the form of class, group or individual assignments. The
type of homework should vary according to the abilities, interests and
educational backgrounds of the students in the group.
7. Assigned homework should be discussed/checked, and when appropriate,
corrected and returned to students.
8. Assignments may be made on a daily basis, or they may be of a long-range
type, such as a report.
9. Teachers should coordinate homework assignments, tests, and projects with
other teachers, as appropriate, to avoid overburdening assignments.
10. Teachers have the responsibility to communicate with parents of students who
are falling behind in completing homework assignments.
Guidelines for Administrators:
1. Include this homework policy in all teacher handbooks.
2. Require teachers to communicate homework policy to students and parents.
3. Assist teachers, when necessary, in implementing this homework policy.
4. Make certain that homework is being assigned according to guidelines.
5. Observe use of homework during classroom visits.
6. Review homework samples periodically.
7. Give suggestions to teachers, when necessary, on how homework
assignments could be improved.
