Community of Caring
Movin' On Up
Dear HuntonBrady,
I went back to school this year. I’m not taking night
classes, but I did spend many weeks preparing for the
American College of Healthcare Architects’ (AHCA)
Board Certification exam, which I took and passed in
April.
I can personally attest to the high quality of the ACHA
exam. It required in-depth knowledge of healthcare
architecture and was clearly focused on the unique issues
with which we deal every day in healthcare projects. Now
I have four more letters after my name, and you have
the assurance that HuntonBrady Architects values
knowledge, experience and dedication to the
profession- all to the benefit of your project.

38...No, Make that 40 AIA
Design Awards
We encourage all our employees to study for professional
accreditation. Several of our architects are currently
studying for LEED accreditation. If you have been
postponing attaining your professional accreditation or
ever doubted the benefits, I highly encourage you to “go
back to school” this year and reach this important goal.
Community College
Partnership Project?
An Architect Leading The
Way
Ewers Century Center at Central Florida
Community College is a national model
for partnership. We worked with the
entire community on the project.
College Planning &
Management magazine ran
this article written by our own
Maurizio Maso, AIA and Zofia
Jurewicz, AIA in the May 2006
issue. They told readers about
the important role that architects
play in transforming community
colleges into valuable assets to
their surrounding communities.
Principal
• Think it's a LEED Accredited Product? Think Again.
In the Winter 2006 issue,
Sketches introduced you to
Kristin Brown, IIDA, our
LEED accredited interior
designer. The U.S. Green
Building Council established
LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) to
distinguish building projects
that have a commitment to
sustainability. We proud to add
another team member to the LEED AP list. Congrats go
out to Susan Pendergraft, AIA, for recently becoming
certified. Kristin and Susan frequently gets asked about
the importance of LEED. A great reference source for the
novice is the USGBC's website. We’ve asked our LEED
APs to keep you updated on LEED news you can
use:
"Be wary of salespeople saying their products are LEED
certified or LEED accredited. Only projects are LEED
certified and people are accredited. Products can help
towards gaining LEED points, but they aren’t certified or
accredited by the USGBC."
Architects posseses certain
consensus-building skills,
including a sense of humour and
the ability to translate abstract
ideas into visible plans, which
make us exceptionally qualified
to lead a project with so many
different players. A list of those
skills includes:
• Establishing a Clear Vision
• Managing the Project
• Setting the Budget &
Controlling the Schedule
• Resolving Conflict
"Another tip: if you are planning a LEED Certified
building, plan on getting a LEED Accredited Professional
(and contractor, in some cases!) on board early to help
identify potential LEED points and help work toward
gaining those points. The earlier the better, as the
LEED AP can offer advice on everything from site
selection to construction methods to building design."
• Maintaining Momentum
Our latest and greatest
partnership project is the
Partnership Center of
Southwest Volusia. At the
groundbreaking in June, the
partners of the facility (Daytona
Beach Community College,
Chamber of Commerce of West
Volusia, Volusia County and the
cities of Orange City, DeBary and
Deltona...whew!) explained the
innovative approaches the Center
will take to spark economic
growth, cultural enhancements
and civic activities. Corporate
training, community education
and numerous cultural programs
will all benefit from sharing the
facility.
Once the project is fully-funded
(the state is matching local funds
the partners raise for the project
dollar for dollar), we should
begin construction. Hopefully
that will occur early next year.
trend. We've designed over 25 MOBs in the Southeast,
The Daytona Beach News Journal interviewed President
growing prevalence of larger, private patient rooms in
we're finished with
the amazing Cancer
from the initial inception to completion for a great story
about the complex and the high expectations we all have
for it.
• 38...No, Make that 40 AIA Design Awards
We just got back from the
2006 AIA Orlando Design
Awards banquet, where a
good time was had by all.
We walked away with two
awards this year, and
couldn't be prouder of our
staff and the cool projects
they're always working on.
These awards are especially
meaningful because they are judged by a jury of our
peers- architects from throughout the United States.
Our Project PlayHouse ,
Florida Hospital Foundation
took home the
Adventist Health System’s
