is the backbone of any successful
club, and with Rick Rausch and
his committee of helpers offering
their assistance; we need to
encourage our newer members to
take advantage of this great service!
While I’m on the “service to
members” soapbox, it’s time to
think about the election of Executive
Board Members in November.
This is your opportunity to join
this group of leaders, responsible
for planning and managing the
business of our growing/evolving
organization. Have ideas on
how we can grow and improve our
service to members --- we need
you with us!
Coming up next is one of our most
successful programs --- Take A
Turn --- Saturday, 25 September
from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Karen
Freitas has offered her great shop
again for our use, and will offer
you the opportunity to try out different
Dave Schweitzer is coming in October!
We are in for a great demo in
October. A number of us watched
demos by Dave Schweitzer at the
Utah Symposium and were very
impressed by his work and by
the techniques he showed us. He
does some things very differently
from other turners and it was eyeopening.
Dave will do an all day demo on
Saturday October 16. He will
show us some easy ways to make
platters with details created by off
setting the center. He will also
show us his technique of quickly
hollowing a hollow form and then
making flutes and a finial.
Dave will also do two 2-day
classes. The classes will be Oct.
14/15 and 17/18. There are spaces
in both classes so if you are interested,
please contact Sally Ault
at sallyault@cox.net or 619-415-
5308. The cost is $200 for the 2
day class and includes lunch each
day and some wood.
Dave is also the manufacturer of
D-Way tools. He will bring some
tools to sell but we can also place
a group order if we have enough
interest. I personally like his tools
very much and especially like his
tool handles.
D-Way Tools
As many of you know Jimmy
spoke highly of Dave’s tools at his
recnt classes. Dave has offered
to give a discount of 5% and free
shipping when the club orders as a
whole and meets a minimum order
of $500.
A few months ago we were lucky
enough to have Jimmy Clewes
demonstrate at our club and two
2-day classes. Sally discovered we
had so many people on the waiting
list that we could fill two more
classes, so she arranged for Jimmy
to come back to teach again and
we quickly filled 3 additional
classes.
Jimmy Clewes Classes
poplar which were then made into
a clam shell box. This class was
able to make a Tulip shaped natural
edge vase.
The two classes I assisted with
also made bowls and goblets but
each class was tailored to the individual
needs or wants of the class
members. During the second class
we had a couple of people use a
little coloring on their bowls and
most made some type of platter.
The last class was treated to another
optional project. We were
lucky enough to have Allan Driver
in our class, who brought in some
beautiful green Alder wood to use.
Jack Cheever’s made a gorgeous
Maple Burl colored bowl out of
a chunk of maple from one of the
Oregon Maple deliveries. I hope
he bring the finished product to
our October meeting.
The afternoon of the last day of
This past week these classes were
held in my shop in Vista. Sally assisted
with the first class and they
started with a simple bowl made
with form in mind. Everyone
learned a few lessons in sharpening
with the Wolverine grinding
system. They took 3x3 inch cherry
sticks and made them into beautiful
goblets with a captive ring.
Many of our members have never
made a goblet or a captive ring
so they were surprised when they
each produced one. Then they
were on to boxes made out of 4x4
I made a Cocobolo clam shell box.
I ended up with a beautiful box
with a snap lid that actually has
matching grain lines. I also decided
I am allergic to Cocobolo and
I break out in a rash around my
(sweaty) neck and my eyes swell
up. If you find yourself itching
or nose running please be careful
of allergic reactions to the exotic
woods.
class we watched Jimmy turn a
Cowboy hat in about 15 or 20
minutes. It took most of the class
the rest of the day to finish their
hats but they turned out great. Everyone
I talked to felt they would
be able to take their new found
skills home and made any of these
projects on their own. I hope we
see our members expanding their
limits and bringing in some new.
I handed out several bowl blanks
and wood to our class members
and I hope I see some of the results
in upcoming meetings.
We have a wonderful resource
with our own wood storage and in
house classes so please take advantage
and turn away. We’ll see
you at our next meeting which will
be the Turn- around at my shop.
Take-A-Turn - Moved to September
Take-A-Turn is moved to the 4th Saturday in September this year.
Because Dave Schweitzer could only make it here in October we will be having the Annual Take-A-Turn on
September 25th 2010. Please take note that this is the 4th Saturday not our normal 3rd Saturday. The Take-A-
Turn will begin at 9:00am and end at 3:00pm.
“Welcome Back!” to everyone who attended last years Take-a-Turn. We encourage anyone who missed it or
newer members - COME ON OVER! We will be making peg board templates for cutting logs on your band
saw as well as several mentors available for you to try something new. Some of the potential stations will be
Peppermills, Bird House Ornaments, Sharpening, Embellishments, Basic bowls, and Tool Techniques or just
bring something you need help with. Many of our mentors and menbers will be on hand to provide instruction
and entertainmant. Karen Freitas is working out the details. She hopes to include a hollowing station and detail
grinders as well.
This is an all day event and includes lunch. Last year’s lunch was Bar-BQ hamburgers, chips, and cookies.
Please donate $5.00 for lunch and $5.00 for materials if you desire to make a Peg Board Template or one of the
Mentor Projects.
How to clean your DVD
Use a soft cloth ~ lint free ~(an old clean T-shirt works great)
Put a little water on the cloth
Wipe the disc from the center to the outside edge ~
DO NOT WIPE IN A CIRCULAR MOTION!
If the water does not solve the problem put some Isopropyl (rubbing)
Alcohol on the cloth and wipe from the center to the outside edge. Again, do
not wipe in a circular motion.
We will be meeting at Karen’s
shop in Vista. She has parking for
about 45 vehicles but if possible
please carpool. The address is:
1652 Montgomery Drive- Vista-
92084 for those GPS people.
For the rest of us coming from
I-15- Take Hwy 78 West to the
Sycamore Exit and turn Right.
Follow Sycamore to the end and
turn left on South Santa Fe. Drive
about 1 mile and turn Right on
Montgomery Drive. Stay to the
Right side of Montgomery Drive–
the house is Dark Green on the
Left side. Drive through (on the
left of the house) to the shop in
the back. Karen’s Mom lives out
Turn Around For Vets
Thanks to all of you who responded to my appeal for
funds for the Turn Around for Vets. You have donated
$1500, including $750 by one individual to buy a lathe.
Also, on 8/31/10, I received a call that the Escondido
Rotary will buy two (2) lathes - $1400. Another member
also donated a mini Vicmarc lathe, motor, and
chuck – new or used only once – a $500 value. I cannot
thank you enough for your generosity.
I will meet with representatives of the Primary Care
Dept. of the C5 (Comprehensive Combat & complex
Casualty Care) program – Balboa Naval Hospital - on
9/2/2010 to discuss how we can fit into an eight (8)
week on-going program. This is a program that we
would, most likely, be teaching EVERY week with time
and hours to be determined. As I indicated this is an
ongoing program so it will go year around – I am going
to need dedicated members to staff.
This is a great program to support – if you can’t support
with your time and money, please support us with
your thoughts and prayers.
San Diego Woodturners Page 9 September 2010
The Kirsten Kone is Back!
More than ten years ago, I was
turning the bottom end of an enclosed
vessel and compressed it
a wee bit too much and split the
entry. Curses followed. Then
I thought, “Make the dowel the
size of the bore and compress
only the bottom.” Great. It
worked. But then, every vessel
bore that was different needed a
different dowel diameter and it
had to be that or smaller all the
way down. Painful.
So I said to myself, “Look, you
had umpteen years of engineering
school and a long career,
you should be able to figure this
out.” Eureka! 1: Use a cone;
2: Let it slide up and down a
shaft. All I had to do now was
get an M-2 taper on it for the
head stock of my lathe. But, that
was the hard part. I couldn’t do
it myself, so I went to a machine
shop and talked to a guy whose
work I respect. “I can put one
on for you,” said he. And he
did, but after some trial and
error. These tapers have to be
just right. Make one end too
big or too small, the other end
will rattle. Not good if you want
concentricity at the working
end!! So we made 10 units that
sold to adventurous club members
and got one to ol’ friend
Mike Mahoney in Provo. I am
pleased to say everyone liked
the units. But, they were very
expensive to make since it was a
low fabrication run.
Then, a few years later, my
San Diego Woodturners Club
decided to make some. They
sold most of their version run
and there has been an inventory
gap. So since I have the Kirsten
Kone on my web site, and since
even some pros have referred to
it when on tour, and since I got
calls and all, I decided to become
rich and famous and have
more made.
This second run of the Kirsten
Kone is also a trial, but it is
based on my original design
with new features added in. As
a long time mechanical engineer,
I’d better do it right or I won’t
hear the end of it. So I began
by choosing the important steel
shafting material that would
be true and straight. Next, I
chose the cone material. Some
clones/knockoffs use aluminum
and even wood for their cones.
Aluminum leaves aluminum
oxide at the point of contact
which imbeds into the mouth of
the vessel. The result is a dark
ring not easily removed. The
same problem occurs with a
wooden cone. (Reminds me of
boy scouts rubbing two sticks to
start a fire.) The turnings won’t
catch, but it can burn and create
a dark streak, not easily removed
either. So I chose Ultra High
Density Polypropylene (UHDP)
which lets the Kone run cooler
so the wood will not burn or
darken.
What is most important is that
the new generation Kirsten Kone
bore and shaft runs true and
tight to the tail stock. The Kone
bores have all been drilled and
then reamed, to assure a good
fit. I also did away with tapped
set screw holes in the plastic
because they are not only tough
to put in but they do strip out.
What the new design has instead
is a more robust shaft collar,
tightened by an Allen wrench
with a “dog point” to help drive
the Kone. At the driver pad
end, instead of a slip fit bore
for a sanding disc shaft and a
set screw, I now use a furniture
leveler screwed in with either
a PSA backed rubber pad or a
similar heavy felt pad because
the sanding disc method was too
compressible and would tear.
Both will drive the wood. Design
complete.
(Continued on page 10)

that is the
way I am. I
want a good
product to
go to good
people doing good things. Help
is as close as an email, should
you need it. Just remember to
clean out the spindle M-2 taper
and knock the shaft in properly
before you start up.
Enjoy.
Allen Brooks Demo
We were given a special
treat at the August meeting
when our own Allen Brooks
did a very well thought
out and executed demo
on making boxes. He
showed us different types
of wood to use and how to
rough out and season box
a box for the best results
and the least headaches.
Allen also showed us how
he makes his lid inserts
which allow for some great
design variations using
small pieces of contrasting
wood and/or stone. Allen
created a beautiful box with
a perfectly fitting lid and
contrasting insert in only 1
½ hours! That is a difficult
feat since Allan says his
boxes normally take 3 days.
If you missed the meeting,
Allen’s handout is printed
here and is very clear. I
hope to see a number of
terrific boxes at the next
instant gallery….you have
until October to produce
something!
blanks. We learned about
lid fit and when to use
which type of lid fit and
MENTORS-MENTORS-MENTORS
Thanks to all of the efforts of the different committees in the club, we have a lot of activities going on all
the time. We have the Symposium, Take a Turn, The Fair, Harvest Festival, Spanish Village, classes by
guest turners, not to mention the fact that we have a healthy influx of new members from various sources,
not the least being, the classes at Palomar college taught by Ken Haines.
Some times we get so busy with all these activities that we overlook the needs of these newer members.
In the past, we have addressed this oversight by having our Mentors set up workshops for smaller group
(4-8) of these newer members and try to help with their own specific problems. These may consist of: tool
techniques, shop ideas, shopping for material and tools, tool sharpening, or just doing small projects.
Are you a new turner or new to our club? I want to make sure we meet your turning needs! In order to do
this, I need your input. Please call me with your suggestions on what we can do to help.
As always, I am open to suggestions.
It’s Raining Wood
(Retold by permission)
It is raining wood!!!! Last
summer the barn was nearly
empty of wood. Then there was
a slight trickle of wood coming
in. In the fall we cut that birch
that we had dyed. And then
there was the large ambrosia
maple in the swamp. Add a few
cherry trees, a few select pieces
of oak, some spalted birch, an
old apple tree, some beech, some
tulip poplar, and a few more
odds and ends and by the end
of September the barn was full
again.....but the deluge had just
begun. Donald was cutting up
some old birch and maple for
firewood when we ‘discovered’
some was ambrosia and some
was nicely spalted. Add in a
few burls and now there was
no room in the inn....or rather
the barn. So I took a week
and reorganized, moved stuff
around, took some stuff to the
dump, and built some shelves.
A little cutting, and waxing and
I had the shelves half full of my
new wood that I just “couldn’t”
pass up. Then in the Winter a
neighbor gave me a large cherry
tree with 2 huge burls (and a
few small ones). I couldn’t pass
up that opportunity so soon that
was cut up and put on the shelf
(plus a couple logs outside off
the ground). Now Spring arrives
and other than a few odds
and ends that I’ve added....I’ve
still got quite a bit of space on
the shelves. A trip to California
and I bring back Black Acacia,
eucalyptus, citrus, manzanita,
persimmon, mesquite, and more.
I carefully cut them all into
bowl blanks, wax, and put them
on the shelf. Now the shelves
are getting full. Ahh...nothing
to worry about, there won’t be
any more wood until at least the
fall. Oops....someone offered
me a very large Black Walnut
tree. Can’t refuse black walnut!
Well....another week of cutting
and waxing and now the black
walnut is stored (except for the
log that went to the sawmill) but
now all the shelves are full and
stuff is crowding into the middle
of the barn.
However, when it rains....it
pours. A couple weeks ago
someone gave me a large hard
maple. Two nice logs for the
mill plus another 3 for bowls.
No room!!!! They had to stay
outside. Today my
brother was cutting
down a couple large
maple trees along
the edge of his hay
field........beautiful
ambrosia maple....
even better than
the stuff I have in
the barn from the
swamp maple. No
matter how much I
try....I can’t turn this
down. So tomorrow
I’ll suspend my
blueberry picking
for a day and cut it
all up and try to find someplace
to put it. It is too good to leave
outside.
When you get here in September....
plan on spending a ‘lot’
of time either rough turning or
bandsawing bowl blanks....I
need the room!! We might have
to leave that dyed maple for
another year. Ohhh I’ve got
a lead on another large cherry
burl....now if Anne will just
allow me to store it in the coat
closet.
I can’t even imagine having this
“problem” in California. I hear
that in some places they burn
cherry and walnut for firewood!
Thanks to Becki Edwards for
passing on this article.
GOT WOOD?
Lots of good wood left in the trailer and new wood coming in all the time.
If large pieces baffle you ask the person selling the wood to help you choose the right piece of wood for
the project you have in mind.
If the pieces are too large for the project or your lathe ask a club member [mentor]to help you to cut it
into usable pieces.
Ask for help in reading the wood to find what beautiful creation is hiding inside waiting to be discovered.
Don’t over look the small limbs which are ideal for weed pots ,bottle stoppers etc. Check the
instant gallery table to see what the different woods look like turned and to get ideas for projects.
The Wood Trailer is open for business 1 hour prior to the meetings. Price 25 cents per pound. Special
in August 10 pounds for 2.50.
