The Eucharistic Prayer
The Eucharistic Prayer or Canon of the Mass is the central prayer of the entire celebration. Most Catholics have been
made aware from their earliest days that during the Eucharistic Prayer the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood
of Christ. What many Catholics are not aware of, however, is that the Eucharistic Prayer is about more than adoring Christ who
becomes present in our midst.
The Church tells us that liturgy (and the Mass is the highpoint and heart of liturgy) is the action of Christ the priest and
His Body, the Church. In the celebration of Mass, during the Eucharistic Prayer, not only does Christ become present, body and
blood, soul and divinity, under the forms of bread and wine, but Christ's saving action, His passion, death and resurrection are once
again enacted and offered to the Father by Christ Himself in the person of the priest, and by all present.
This is a truth of enormous significance!. This action of Christ which brought about our redemption from sin and eternal
death, offered once for all on Calvary, becomes present again for us, here and now, in this time and place, so that we can join in
Christ's perfect offering and can ourselves participate in His perfect worship.
Read carefully any of the Eucharistic Prayers. You will see that that prayer is offered, not to Christ, but to the Father:
Father, you are holy indeed ...; Father, we bring you these gifts ...; Father, we ask you .... It is worship offered to the Father by
Christ as it was at the moment of His passion, death and resurrection, but now it is offered through the priest acting in the person of
Christ, and it is offered as well by all of us who are part of Christ's Body, the Church. This is the action of Christ's Body, the
Church at Mass.
When the priest prays this prayer he prays we bring you these gifts; we ask you ...; we offer. That we signifies that all the
baptized present at this Eucharistic celebration make this offering in union with Christ, pray this prayer in union with Him. And
what is most important, we do not offer Christ alone; we are called to offer ourselves, our lives, our individual efforts to grow
more like Christ and our efforts as a community of believers to spread God's Word and to serve God's people, to the Father in
union with Christ through the hands of the priest. Most wonderful of all, although our offering is in itself imperfect, joined with the
offering of Christ it becomes perfect praise and thanksgiving to the Father.
And so, during the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass, we have more to do than to look forward to the moment of consecration
and remain there while the prayer of the priest continues. Before the consecration we join in the prayer of praise and thanksgiving
to the Father known as the Preface and affirm that praise and thanksgiving in our singing of the Holy, Holy, Holy. Following the
Consecration we join together in the Memorial Acclamation which proclaims our common faith in Christ's real presence and is an
acclamation expressing our gratitude to Christ for His wonderful gift of salvation. But then our prayer moves on and we are called
to offer Christ, and ourselves with Christ to the Father: 'We offer to you, Father, this holy and living sacrifice...' and to pray with
the priest that 'we who are nourished by His Body and Blood may be filled with the Holy Spirit and become one body, one spirit in
Christ...'; we then join our prayers with the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints for our Holy Father the Pope, our
bishops and clergy and all God's people, living and dead. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer the priest sums up all that has
gone before: ' Through Him (Christ), with Him (Christ), in Him 'Christ) in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours,
almighty Father, forever and ever.' And we who are privileged to make our own offering through, with and in Christ, respond with
the most important acclamation of the Mass, the great AMEN by which we profess the action of Christ to be our action as well.
FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND JUNE 18-19, 2011
As quoted by our beloved Bishop John T. Steinbock. . . . “Every year on Father’s day, we remember fondly our Fathers, both
living and dead. We give thanks to God for them and we recall the lessons they taught us and the example they gave us. We
celebrate their ongoing presence in our lives and we realize that so much of who we are is due to our Dads. God bless our Fathers
with a wonderful Father’s Day.
Father’s Day is also the day for the annual Priests’ Retirement Fund Collection. Through this collection, the People of God
can show their appreciation and love for the priests who have served them so faithfully in the parishes and who gave so much of
themselves for the good of their people.
This collection, works to add to the Priests’ Retirement Fund, so that the needs of our priests living in retirement can be met.
While the Priests’ Retirement Fund is in good shape financially, we must still be vigilant in making sure that this Fund will be available
for all priests and viable for all priests as retirement becomes a reality.”

La Plegaria Eucarística o Canon de la Misa es la oración central de toda la celebración. La mayoría de los católicos han
tomado conciencia desde los inicios, que durante la Plegaria Eucarística el pan y el vino se transforman en el Cuerpo y en la
Sangre de Cristo. Sin embargo, de lo que muchos católicos no han tomado conciencia es que la Plegaria Eucarística es más que
la adoración a Cristo que se hace presente en medio de nosotros.
La Iglesia nos dice que la liturgia (y la Misa es el punto culminante y el corazón de la liturgia) es la acción de Cristo
Sacerdote y Su Cuerpo que es la Iglesia. En la celebración de la Misa, durante la Plegaria Eucarística, no sólo Cristo se hace
presente, en su cuerpo y sangre, alma y divinidad, bajo las formas del pan y del vino, sino que también la acción salvadora de
Cristo, Su pasión, muerte y resurrección se realiza nuevamente y es ofrecida al Padre por el mismo Cristo en la persona del
sacerdote y de todos los presentes.
"¡Ésta es una verdad de enorme trascendencia! Esta acción de Cristo que nos trajo la redención del pecado y de la
muerte eterna, ofrecida una vez y por todos en el Calvario se realiza de nuevo, para nosotros aquí y ahora, en este tiempo y
lugar, de modo que nos podamos unir a la ofrenda perfecta de Cristo y podamos nosotros mismos participar en Su culto
perfecto.
Lean cuidadosamente cualquiera de las Plegarias Eucarísticas. Se darán cuenta de que la oración es dirigida no a Cristo
sino al Padre: "Padre, eres verdaderamente santo..."; "Padre, estas ofrendas Te las presentamos..."; "Padre, te rogamos...". Es un
culto ofrecido al Padre por Cristo tal como fue en el momento de Su pasión, muerte y resurrección, pero ahora es ofrecido por
medio del sacerdote que actúa en la persona de Cristo y es, asimismo, ofrecida por todos nosotros que formamos parte del
Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia. Ésta es la acción del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, en la Misa.
Cuando el sacerdote eleva esta plegaria, dice: "te ofrecemos estos dones "; "te pedimos"; "te ofrecemos". Este "nosotros"
significa que todos los bautizados que están presentes en esta celebración Eucarística hacen este ofrecimiento en unión con
Cristo, rezan esta plegaria en unión con Él y lo que es más importante aún, no ofrecemos solo a Cristo al Padre, sino que estamos
llamados a ofrecernos a nosotros mismos, nuestras vidas, nuestros esfuerzos individuales, para asemejarnos aún más a Cristo y
ofrecer nuestros aportes, como comunidad de creyentes, para difundir la Palabra de Dios y servir al pueblo de Dios, al Padre, en
unión con Cristo, a través de las manos del sacerdote. Lo más maravilloso de todo es que a pesar de que nuestra ofrenda en sí
misma sea imperfecta, uniéndose con la de Cristo se transforma en una alabanza y acción de gracias perfecta al Padre.
También durante la Plegaria Eucarística en la Misa, tenemos mucho más que hacer que simplemente esperar el
momento de la consagración, y quedarnos allí pasivamente, mientras continúa la oración del sacerdote. Notemos que antes de la
consagración nos unimos a la oración de alabanza y acción de gracias al Padre, conocida como el Prefacio, y afirmamos esa
alabanza y acción de gracias con nuestro canto a quien es tres veces Santo. Después de la consagración, nos unimos todos en la
Aclamación Memorial que proclama nuestra fe común en la presencia real de Cristo y expresa nuestra gratitud a Cristo por Su
maravilloso regalo de salvación. Más aún, nuestra plegaria cambia su sentido y somos invitados a ofrecer a Cristo y a nosotros
mismos, con Cristo, al Padre: "Te ofrecemos, Padre, este sacrificio vivo y santo..." Somos invitados a orar junto con el sacerdote
por nosotros que “alimentados por Su Cuerpo y por Su Sangre, seamos colmados del Espíritu Santo y seamos un solo cuerpo y
un solo espíritu en Cristo; luego, unimos nuestras plegarias a las de Santa María Virgen y todos los santos intercediendo por
nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa, nuestros obispos y el clero y todo el pueblo de Dios, vivos y difuntos. Al concluir la Plegaria
Eucarística, el sacerdote resume todo lo ocurrido previamente: “Por Cristo, con Él (Cristo) y en Él (Cristo) a Tí Dios Padre
Omnipotente en la unidad del Espíritu Santo, todo honor y toda gloria, por los siglos de los siglos”. Nosotros, que somos
privilegiados de poder contando hacer nuestro propio ofrecimiento, por, con y en Cristo, respondemos con la aclamación más
importante de la Misa, que es el gran AMÉN, con el cual profesamos que la acción de Cristo es también nuestra acción.

Almighty God, Send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of
the Diocese of Fresno.
May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and
most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus.
We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and that Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we
make through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

The apostles in the Upper Room waiting for Pentecost is an example of waiting for something good.
We are all waiting for the opportunity to serve the Lord. The trouble is that sometimes we miss the
opportunity to serve Him because unlike the apostles in the Upper Room, we are not waiting in prayer.
We must stay united to the Lord and keep an active prayer life, so we are attuned to God’s call.
O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love, impart Your knowledge, understanding, and
counsel to youth that they may know the vocation wherein they can best serve God. Give them
courage and strength to follow God's holy will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their
resolutions, shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their hearts, and lead them to
the vineyards where they will labor in God's holy service. Amen

When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or
Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
(1 Cor 12:13)
Jesus … stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with
you." (John 20:19)
he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy
Spirit.” (John 20:22)
Reflection
Is there anything that you do to cause you to be “filled with the Holy Spirit?”
Does everyone receive the same Spirit?
What happens when you receive the Spirit?
How do you live in the Spirit in your family and in your parish community?
The problem of forming Christ in us is not to be solved by our own
efforts. It is not a matter of studying the Gospels and then working to put our
ideas into practice, although we should try and do that too, but always under the
guidance of grace, in complete subjection to the Holy Spirit..
For if we depend on our own ideas, our own judgment and our own
efforts to reproduce the life of Christ, we will only act out some pious charade
which will ultimately scare everybody we meet because it will be so stiff and
artificial and so dead.
It is the Spirit of God that must teach us Who Christ is and
form Christ in us and transform us into other Christ's.

PRAYERS TO SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA
Glorious Saint Anthony, I salute you as a good servant of
Christ, and a special friend of God. You once were favored
to hold the Christ Child in your arms as you cherished His
world in your heart. Today I place all my cares, temptations
and anxieties in your hands. I resolve ever to honor you by
imitating your example. Powerful patron, model of purity and victor over

spiritual gifts” and “different forms of
service, but the same Lord” (1 Corinthians
12:4). Yet spiritual gifts and service can be
mismatched, causing difficulties for the
person and the parish. Think of John, who
had been head of the finance committee
for over fifteen years. As an able
businessman and head of his own
company he dominated meetings, tightly
controlled the agenda, and managed to
push through “pet projects” by silencing
and alienating other committee members.
John is an example of someone with
strong administrative gifts who needed a
different challenge. Fortunately, John was
tapped by the new pastor to begin a
“Welcome Home” ministry for Catholics
who have left the Church. This initiative is
flourishing as John has discovered new
energy and enthusiasm in matching his
planning skills with hospitality. Then there
is Alice, who was talked into teaching a
parish religion class, although she had no
training and didn’t relate well to young
teens. Alice did not really know her true
abilities, so her service was reluctant and
not likely to last. Another woman on the
faith formation team sensed Alice’s
difficulties. They were chatting after class
and Alice said she had just finished
arranging the wedding of her third
daughter. Her friend sympathized with all
the hard work, and Alice said “Oh no, I just
love weddings!” Alice now leads a team of
parish wedding coordinators, who help
couples through all the arrangements
before and during their special day. She
attracts new volunteers easily because she
has such aptitude and love for the work.
The Spirit is enriching the spiritual lives of
John and Alice because their service
matches their abilities, and their service, in
turn, is adding new strength to their parish
community.

Around the Diocese
Camping Retreat
St. Anthony Retreat is offering a special retreat for adults who love the outdoors
and want to experience prayer and God’s presence in an outdoor setting. The retreat
includes the first and last night accommodations at St. Anthony Retreat Center, with three
nights camping in Sequoia National Park. The cost of the retreat is $400 which includes a
private room and bath at St. Anthony Retreat, park fees, reserved campsites and campsite fees as well as all meals and
reflection materials.
We will set up our bas camp at a group campground at Dorst Creek within Sequoia National Park. We will hike to
Muir Grove on Tuesday (a gorgeous hike to a secluded group of Giant Sequoias), and to Little Baldy on Wednesday (a
hike with spectacular views of the western divide). Both hikes are moderate and about 5 miles round trip. There will be
ample time in the afternoons for journaling, reading and quiet reflection with common prayer and reflection at the end of
each day. And best of all, there will be cooks to take care of our meals - and we do eat very well!
The retreat begins at 3:00pm on Sunday afternoon, June 26. The afternoon and evening will be used as an
orientation to the retreat. On Monday morning we will leave for Sequoia National Park. (St. Anthony Retreat Center is just
three miles to the entrance to the park.) Retreatants will need to bring their own camping/backpacking equipment
(including tent and sleeping bag) and be in good physical condition for hiking in moderate 6,000 to 8,000 feet elevation.
Because participation in this retreat is limed to a total of 12 people you are encouraged to register ASAP. Sister Danielle
Witt will be leading the retreat.

St. Anthony of Padua
Doctor of the Church

Saint Anthony was canonized (declared a saint) less than one year after his death.
There is perhaps no more loved and admired saint in the Catholic Church than Saint
Anthony of Padua, a Doctor of the Church. Though his work was in Italy, he was born in Portugal. He first
joined the Augustinian Order and then left it and joined the Franciscan Order in 1221, when he was 26
years old. The reason he became a Franciscan was because of the death of the five Franciscan protomartyrs
-- St. Bernard, St. Peter, St. Otho, St. Accursius, and St. Adjutus -- who shed their blood for the Catholic Faith
in the year 1220, in Morocco, in North Africa, and whose headless and mutilated bodies had been brought
to St. Anthony’s monastery on their way back for burial. St. Anthony became a Franciscan in the hope of
shedding his own blood and becoming a martyr. He lived only ten years after joining the Franciscan Order.
So simple and resounding was his teaching of the Catholic Faith, so that the most unlettered and
innocent might understand it, that he was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Saint
Anthony was only 36 years old when he died. He is called the “hammer of the Heretics” His great protection
against their lies and deceits in the matter of Christian doctrine was to utter, simply and innocently, the Holy
Name of Mary. When St. Anthony of Padua found he was preaching the true Gospel of the Catholic Church
to heretics who would not listen to him, he then went out and preached it to the fishes. This was not, as
liberals and naturalists are trying to say, for the instruction of the fishes, but rather for the glory of God, the
delight of the angels, and the easing of his own heart. St. Anthony wanted to profess the Catholic Faith with
his mind and his heart, at every moment.
He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus, to whom He miraculously appeared,
and is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles." Upon exhumation, some 336 years after
his death, his body was found to be corrupted, yet his tongue was totally incorrupt, so perfect were the
teachings that had been formed upon it.
Prayer to Saint Anthony, Example of Humility
Dear St. Anthony, after all these years in the school of Christ, I still haven't learned the lesson of true
humility. My feelings are easily ruffled. Quick to take offense, I am slow to forgive. St. Anthony, Example of
Humility, teach me the importance and necessity of this Christian virtue. In the presence of Jesus, who
humbled Himself and whom the Father exalted, remember also these special intentions of mine. (Name
