Where dance is going next
Eddie Nixon, Director of
The Place Theatre tells us a
little more about Spring Loaded
Eddie, what can you tell us about Spring Loaded as a season?
In Spring Loaded we’re bringing together some of the most inventive new dances that
have been made over the past few months. The season is loaded with new ideas from people
who are really trying to do things differently. They’ve got a particular buzzing energy and we
feel that if you’re interested in new trends then this is the stuff you should be watching.
And who are the artists you programme?
They come from all different places and backgrounds. They also draw on various styles of
choreography, performance and movement. Although not necessarily well known to the public
yet, we’re pretty convinced that together they represent the notion of where dance is going next.
In this brochure
What can our audience members expect from a Spring Loaded evening?
Some of it’s funny, some includes lots of words and really loud music. Some has lots
of dancing and some has less. There are ideas that feel everyday and others that need
deciphering. But that’s the kind of dance we’re bringing together. Sometimes there’s plenty
to think about but nothing to understand. What I can say for sure is that no two shows are
going to look the same but they will all reveal an attitude towards the world we’re living in
from people who’ve plenty to say about it.
Alongside a description of the pieces you
will come across our Dance Barometer.
This tool gives you another flavour of
what to expect from the shows.
Look out for the Spectator School
Spring Loaded shows. This could be a
stage tour. Simply go to the event’s page
for a second show. This offer is valid in the
Spring Loaded season and you must book
both shows within the same transaction.
Eva Recacha
Fri 25 & Sat 26 Apr 8pm
Easy Rider
Easy Rider reflects upon faith, tradition and
delusion. Eva Recacha looks at the human
compulsion to engage with superstitious beliefs
and practices in the pursuit of happiness,
revealing a concoction of religion, customs
and self-help manuals.
In Easy Rider, Eva draws on first-hand observations
of ritualistic behaviour in her native Spain. Easy
Rider is a theatrical rite unravelling the pure
essence of our need to belong. It reflects our own
beliefs and passions in a raw and haunting way.
‘Recacha is a talent to watch.’
Riots
Men on a Mission
Inspired by protests against rising social
unrest around the world, Riots is a short
and high energy piece. Choreographer
and performer Robby Graham combines
breaking, contemporary and contact
practices in a brand new movement style.
Men on a Mission is an insight into the
clique and artificial glamour associated
with recreational drugs. It is a look at
experimentation, addiction and decline,
powerfully danced to a Tarantino-esque
score.
‘Atmospheric, vigorous
and breathtaking.’
T-Dance
In this subtle, compelling and poetic piece four
performers charm their audience, moving through
space connected by wooden sticks in a tensed
‘motion sculpture’. T-Dance exposes the risk of
collapse should one of the performer lose focus.
This piece explores touch, our need to touch, to
be touched - the cause and effect of tactility and
physical connection.
Without ever leaving their seats, audience
members are called to immerse themselves in
the performance. As each section of the work
progresses, they are invited to experience the
empathetic, sometimes imagined touch
happening on stage.
‘A fascinating journey to the
way tactility moves our bodies.’
Last Man Standing
Last Man Standing looks at human behaviours
when facing danger: how we cope with life’s
fragility and the desire to survive. Choreographer
James Wilton explores fear, anger and
determination as ways to respond to these
universal elements.
Last Man Standing is a new work by rising star
James Wilton (Spring Loaded 2013). Driven
by unparalleled energy and athleticism, James’
choreography will leave you breathless. He blends
martial art, break dancing and capoeira to create
raw and original choreography for his cast of six
world class dancers.
‘James Wilton may be the future
of British choreography.’
Tue 13 May 8pm
Assembly
Assembly brings together three distinct and contrasting works
by choreographer Joe Moran, a fresh voice in British dance.
Decommission, a compelling new solo performed by Moran,
is a lively experiment in intimacy and risk. Commissioned for
The Place Prize for dance sponsored by Bloomberg 2012,
Obverse pursues formalism in choreography. For Moran’s
third work, masculinity comes under inspection to complete
the Assembly line up.
Each work tackles full-bodied dancing and critical thinking.
Together they make an arresting evening of dance and
discourse driven by movement and flickering with ideas.
‘Moran proved that dance can speak
a distinctly twenty-first century
visual arts language.’
Idiot-Syncrasy
Idiot-Syncrasy is a jumping
dance that says ‘don’t let the
world bring you down’. Sometimes
intense, sometimes delightfully
funny, the two performers shift
through repetitive movement
revealing subtle distinctions.
Igor and Moreno call on their folk
Sardinian and Basque tradition
to create a contemporary take
on what most of ancient dances
share: jumping for empowerment
and happiness. Idiot-Syncrasy
is a quirky piece exploring
commitment to a cause and
perseverance despite sometimes
feeling like idiots when trying to
change the world.
‘Clever and
Tue 10 Jun 8pm
This is that
This is that is a thought-provoking dance and spoken word piece
created by choreographer Philippe Blanchard together with
filmmakers twins Luca and Gabriele Stifani. They question
discrepancies between what we see and how we interpret
images and appearances.
This stripped-down, highly entertaining and intricate performance
invites the audience to explore the multiple possibilities of what is
seen and heard. Through repetition and transformation, calling
upon our imagination and sense of togetherness, it plays with
our perception of what things are or could be, blurring a few
lines along the way.
‘This is that is soft, stripped-down
and humorous; simple and charming,
sometimes also very touching.’
I was interested in: the representation of women in art, in dance
emerged through the process including the beauty of trying
