ALYTH COMMUNITY COUNCIL I would like to open this update by way of thanks to our past Chairman, Jim Adam and our past Secretary, George Durance. Jim started his community working life 60 years ago when at the age of 23 he became chairman of the then brand new Caird Housing Association in the housing estate of Caird in Dundee. Throughout his working life Jim has maintained a passion for community issues. He has been associated with such work from the North East of Scotland to the South West of England. Jim decided to settle in Alyth some time ago now and again became involved in local issues. He has held the positions of Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman of Alyth Community Council. He is associated with countless other voluntary organisations around our county and has a list of achievements too numerous to list in these pages. Although Jim has now decided to take a back seat we will still be able to tap in to all of the knowledge he has built up on his lifelong journey. George Durance came to our community around eight years ago now and immediately joined the Community Council. George has carried out the duties of Secretary with abundant skill. George has a particular skill in organising events and raising monies for charity. He was instrumental, excuse the pun, in bringing the Brass Band ‘Boobs and Brass’ to our town last year. From that event £6,000 was donated by our townsfolk and those that George came in to contact with. That money went to a Breast Cancer charity. As with Jim, George is not escaping entirely and he has agreed to continue to help our community in the fields of events organisation. And so to the new, our new members this year are Susan Allan, Sanjay Samani and a welcome return to Barbara Prettyman. All three are active in many organisations around our town. They will undoubtedly bring in new ideas and many skills. All three are actively involved in the visioning process in town just now. For further details on this subject go to http:// alyth2020.ning.com Your Community Council now has an email address where you can send in questions, comments or ideas. It is AlythCommunityCouncil@pkc.gov.uk Part of the function of the Community Council is to draw your attention to issues around the town which are noteworthy. I would like to draw your attention to some excellent work that has been going on this year at Alyth Primary School. For a little over a year there has been an initiative on going in cycling proficiency and road craft. There can be nothing more important than the protection of all of our children. Instrumental in the organisation of the cycling initiative are Ms. Steph Samson and Mrs Eleanor Neilson. From the initial steps the school are now working with younger age groups and the children love it. Another initiative at the school is the Health Group. They cover everything from healthy eating to exercise and now they are providing cooking lessons with a health theme. Again this initiative has been ongoing for over a year and Mrs Mary Clift and Ms. Lisa Snedden have been instrumental in making learning very enjoyable for the children. Congratulations to each of them and to the school for making learning fun. Stuart Clark, Alyth Community Council.
