BRAW SUCCESS FOR LOCAL RUNNERS Six members of Braw Toon Runners (BTR) took part in the Cateran Trail Relay Race on Saturday 9th May. Starting in Blairgowrie, runners ran in pairs over three stages of 7 miles, 8 miles, and 9 miles finishing at the Spittal of Glenshee. Despite the rain and muddy conditions, the BTR runners were first local team and eighth team overall, a braw achievement. The photograph shows the team before the start from left Stuart Mills, Laurie Mills, Eliot Palmer, Ron McGill, Sue Pople, Nicky MacFarlane. 26 BURNSIDE SOCIAL SUCCESS Burnside Court Social Club held a Scottish Night on Friday 8 th May. Eddie Rose and Sandy Lindsay entertained a full house in Airlie Street Hall and a great night out was had by all. CHRISTIAN AID AFTERNOON TEA © R. McGill Members of Alyth’s three churches joined together to hold an Afternoon Tea on Sunday 10th May to launch Christian Aid Week in Alyth, and raised £202. April was another good month for saving energy. The town used 8.4% less electricity than it did in April 2008. CAT are planning to hold a weekend of energy awareness activities on the 29 th and 30 th August, in association with St Ninian’s Church (who have also received Climate Challenge Funding for a new efficient boiler) as a launch to a big push to encourage the whole town to help us reach the 10% target in September. Watch out for details in the next Voice. Over the next few weeks, as part of our ‘Street by Street Insulation Project’, every house in Alyth will receive a letter from CAT and a Home Energy Check Questionnaire. ALYTH QUIZ LEAGUE An inter-town quiz took place between Alyth Quiz League and Blairgowrie Quiz League on the 14th April at The Strathmore Golf Centre Alyth and on the 21st April at The Gig Blairgowrie. The two evenings of quizzes were enjoyed by all. In keenly fought contests Alyth were narrowly beaten by 5 points. A new inter-town trophy, gifted by Alyth’s Who Cares Team, was presented to the victorious Blairgowrie quiz master. A sum of £410 was raised over the two nights, which was equally split between the two leagues. The monies going to the Christmas light funds of the both towns. At a presentation held in Geo’s bar on Wednesday 29th April a cheque for £205 was presented to (photo L-R) Ricky Don, Chairman of Alyth Christmas Lights Fund by Kevin Smith. It has been agreed to make this an annual competition between the two towns. In closing may I on behalf of both Quiz Leagues give a big thanks to mine hosts at both venues for the marvellous buffets which were provided. Brodie ALYTH KNITTING FOR CHARITY When I tried to get into my cupboard, I realised it was FULL of beautiful knitted garments, of all shapes and sizes! Blankets ditto! And I realised that another year has nearly passed since a group of us assembled to sort out, pack and dispatch a similar mountain of kindness, worked with love by the Ladies of Alyth (and friends!). Once more thank you for your support and generosity. Wool has also been donated and re-distributed to the extent that my garage has now a lot more room in it! In May, I will be letting others see some of the beautiful work that has accumulated this year as my way of saying a public “Thank You” by “dressing” Hobbies window again, before sorting and sending them on their way to Balcraig foundation, Ninewells Neo-natal unit, Smile Train and, hopefully Feed the Children , as last year. I have been donated some more cones! Last year I ploughed my way through, with borrowed equipment nearly 200 cones! So… Before I start on this next lot, are there any more lurking in the dark recesses of your loft? For once the machines are up and running, it is easier to do a lot! Rather than a few!
