Sorry NO dogs are allowed. The walk covers almost 4 miles the total height climbed is 113 metres – although not all in one go! Courtesy of the MacLean Family, there will be a juice, buns and comfort stop at Burnside (48 metres) where you can sit for a wee while, enjoy the view and refuel before setting off on the next part of the walk. Those wishing an easier time can start at Kilry Hall and do part of the walk in reverse. They can go as far as they wish along this fairly level section, retracing their steps back to the hall. This end of the walk will be unsupervised to begin with but there will be signs marking the way in both directions so you won’t get lost! Along the route there will be some things to keep the children (and perhaps the adults) amused and, as a reward, at the end the walk there will be tea, juice and home baking to enjoy in Kilry Hall. We also hope to have some activities/games to entertain the children (if they have any energy left!). Transport will be available for car drivers back to Loanhead if it is required. ALYTH ARTS GROUP Alyth Arts Group has managed to accumulate a fair body of work in its short existence. The public will be able to see the group's progress at our first exhibition in the Airlie Street Hall on Wednesday 10th June 2009. Our work will be on display from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. One or two more brave members, will be demonstrating their techniques in acrylics and water-colours, even oils, and course tutor Roz Button will be there to answer the public's queries. Call Simon on 01382 580245 or 07709-340575 AT LAST… A week of rain, a few days of sun and then back to the rain: a glance at the Met Office’s website contains the statement that “The coming summer is 'odds on for a barbecue summer', according to long-range forecasts.” Let us hope so! A pair of swallows has begun to build a nest in one of the outhouses at the back of this house. The mud is still wet and the nest only partly made. So far there is only one new nest abuilding, which is fewer than often in the past, but better than I thought it was going to be a few days ago when the rain was falling heavily. Sand martins have been abundant for the last while. I think they must be nesting in the sandy drumlins over at Fyal. They have discovered the new pond that the beavers made next to the drive and are benefiting from the mayflies and other insects that abound there. There are swallows there as well and I enjoy watching the two species swooping over the water. The sand martins make a dry, rasping cry, as it is described in Lars Jonsson’s ‘Birds of Europe’ and, as the same book says, are the only members of the swallow family in Europe to have brown backs. Where are the swifts? Usually they arrive here in the first week of May, but I didn’t see one until yesterday (19th May), when I glimpsed one climbing fast to clear my house. At last, I thought, a swift! The reason for the dearth of swallows and swifts is a reminder of last summer’s cold and rain. Fewer insects hatched than usual and it followed that there was less food for many species. That is why there are fewer insect eating birds around this year: not that bullying buzzards, sadistic sparrowhawks and malicious magpies have eaten them all up. Shortage of grass is a worry in a late spring. Ewes need abundant forage at this time of year to produce plenty of milk on which to suckle their lambs. Earlier, in April, at the beginning of the lambing here the weather was good and full of promise, but later in the month the weather cooled and the growth of grass slowed. Beavers give birth to their kits during May. Today a student, whose project is to study beaver dams and their effect on water, came to me and asked if I ever saw beavers during the day. I told him that it was very rare to see the beavers in the burn by day, but that one could often see them in the ponds in the evening. He told me that he had just seen a beaver in the burn and would I like to see it too. We set off to look for this animal and found it, lurking by a hole it was digging in the bank. I returned to the house and reflected on the nature of this beaver. My conclusion was that it was a female and that she was preparing a burrow in which to give birth. We shall wait and see, and be careful to leave her alone. At last, I have heard a cuckoo this spring! Paul Ramsay ACF AND OUTREACH PROJECT NEWS Promotions:- On 16th April 2009, Sgt Grant Duffy (Alyth), Sgt Christopher Gregory (Coupar Angus) both promoted to Staff Sergeants. Congratulations:- To Cpl Connor Boag who has been selected to go to a Canadian Cadet Leadership Marksmanship Course at Connaught near Ottawa. This is a great achievement and a marvellous opportunity for our cadet, the new skills he will gain will be used when Cpl Boag and his shooting team go down to Bisley later in the year. Well done! Alyth Outreach Project:- 10 pupils from Alyth Primary School are taking part in the ACFA Youth and Community Project run by the Blairgowrie Army Cadets. The award winning project had a visit from HRH Prince Edward on 7th April at Balhousie Castle Perth. Alyth is represented along with Rattray and Coupar Angus Primary schools, also accompanying pupils is head teacher Mr Mark Lindsay.
