Your Letters THANKS St. Ninian’s Church Once again our most grateful thanks to the wonderful Alyth folk. Our coffee morning on the 9 th May raised the grand total of £709. In this time of economic downturn, we think this is a great example of the community spirit that Alyth is known for. Many, many thanks. D. Oldham THANKS Fotheringham Murray & Ashleigh would like to thank family & friends for the beautiful gifts & cards they received on the birth of their daughter, Summer. THANKS Cruickshanks Irene Cruickshanks of New Alyth would like to thank all members of the Alyth Country Dance Group for the beautiful flowers and cards sent following her hip operation in Perth. I would also like to thank the many friends from Alyth, New Alyth, Meigle, Blairgowrie, and Dundee for their cards and good wishes. Also all the staff of Ward 7, PRI, for their very kind attention. I am getting on fine. Thank you all. Saltillo, Tupelo, Mississippi, USA Email: 1rebs2@comcast.net 12 th May 2009 Dear Alyth Voice, We would like to publish in the Alyth Voice a thank you to all the kind and helpful people we met in Alyth. They made us feel so at home. We are researching to see if there are any descendents of James Spalding and Cecilia Ogilvy of John's Hill. My great grandfather Alexander Ogilvy Spalding of John's Hill and Toutie Street in Alyth emigrated to the US in 1883 and left four siblings - brothers, James and David Spalding of John's Hill (or Alyth?) and sisters, Jean and Mary L. Spalding also of John's Hill or Alyth. We think David emigrated to Australia approximately the same time. Any information concerning any of these people would be appreciated. We found the headstone of Thomas Spalding and Janet Soutar in the Old Arches Kirk Yard in Alyth. If anyone is related to either we would like to hear from you. Thanks and again we appreciate the warmth shown by the kind people in Alyth and Alyth Parish Church. It truly felt like a Scottish Homecoming. We look forward to returning someday. Clarence & Sue Shepherd COULD YOU BE A VOICETEER? Would you be willing to spare a few hours as a relief Voiceteer to cover holidays? Tel: 633725 Don’t have access to email? It’s free in the Airlie Street Library ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Robbie Thomson The family of the late Robbie Thomson wish most sincerely to thank all relatives, friends and local communities for the many, many kind expressions of sympathy and condolence, cards & flowers received during our tragic loss of Robbie. A special thanks to D. Scott funeral Directors, Billy MacKay, Margot and their team for their sincere, passionate and warm handling of all the arrangements. To Rev Ian Knox for his most comforting services. We would also like to mention individuals who were especially kind & thoughtful:- Morna Bissett (Something Special Flowers), Angela MacDonald (Copy Shop), Hazel Thom, Kath Sangster & Dawn Tosh (Cakes for funeral tea), Fiona Gibson (Commemorative Cards), Staff & Pupils of Blairgowrie High School (Donations from their Easter Service), Hazel Thom & Catriona Smith (Babysitting), Alyth Bowling Club (Watty & Isobel), and finally many, many thanks to all who paid their last respects to Robbie and gave generously the sum of £173, to be gifted to Alyth Primary School. Thank you all again we couldn’t have got through it without all the support. Thanks. With Kindest Regards, Robbie’s family York Tel: (01904) 410692 Email: outgang2@aol.com THE COCHRANES OF CRAIGISLA In about 1900, Andrew Cochrane, a successful grocer in Glasgow, purchased Craigisla House, near Kilry, and moved there with his wife, Susan Herald Reid, and their five children. He died suddenly of appendicitis in 1924, but his widow stayed on until her death in 1950. One of their daughters, Emily Susan Herald (better known as Queenie) married Alexander Reid Moodie, an eye surgeon from Dundee. My husband, Graeme Cochrane Moodie was their son. He died in August 2007, but his many happy memories of Craigisla are described in detailed, written recollections. With this material as a base, I am now writing a book about his early life. I have found some material on the Internet; however, I would like to hear any memories or stories of the Cochranes or Craigisla and its surrounding area. Photos would be most welcome. Can you help me? Before coming to the UK, I was a journalist in Canada, and now live in York, where Graeme was the Founding Professor of Politics at the University of York. Many thanks, Andrea Russell ALYTH ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP will be holding their AGM on Thursday 11 th June 2009 at 7.30pm in Geo’s Bar 14 JACKIE MCCOWAN RACE FOR LIFE I am doing the Race for Life at Camperdown on Sunday 14 th June 2009. All the girls and helpers enjoyed the evening from start to finish. Well done to everyone concerned.
