the 9 th May raised the grand total of £709. In<br />

this time of economic downturn, we think this<br />

is a great example of the community spirit<br />

Dear <strong>Alyth</strong> <strong>Voice</strong>,<br />

We would like to publish in the <strong>Alyth</strong> <strong>Voice</strong><br />

a thank you to all the kind and helpful people<br />

we met in <strong>Alyth</strong>. They made us feel so at<br />

home.<br />

We are researching to see if there are any<br />

descendents of James Spalding and Cecilia<br />

Ogilvy of John's Hill. My great grandfather<br />

Alexander Ogilvy Spalding of John's Hill and<br />

Toutie Street in <strong>Alyth</strong> emigrated to the US in<br />

1883 and left four siblings - brothers,<br />

James and David Spalding of John's Hill (or<br />

<strong>Alyth</strong>?) and sisters, Jean and Mary L.<br />

Spalding also of John's Hill or <strong>Alyth</strong>. We think<br />

David emigrated to Australia approximately<br />

the same time. Any information concerning<br />

any of these people would be appreciated.<br />

We found the headstone of Thomas<br />

Spalding and Janet Soutar in the Old Arches<br />

Kirk Yard in <strong>Alyth</strong>. If anyone is related to<br />

either we would like to hear from<br />

you. Thanks and again we appreciate the<br />

warmth shown by the kind people in <strong>Alyth</strong> and<br />

<strong>Alyth</strong> Parish Church. It truly felt like<br />

a Scottish Homecoming. We look forward to<br />

returning someday.<br />

THE COCHRANES OF CRAIGISLA<br />

In about 1900, Andrew Cochrane, a successful<br />

grocer in Glasgow, purchased Craigisla House,<br />

near Kilry, and moved there with his wife, Susan<br />

Herald Reid, and their five children. He died<br />

suddenly of appendicitis in 1924, but his widow<br />

stayed on until her death in 1950. One of their<br />

daughters, Emily Susan Herald (better known as<br />

Queenie) married Alexander Reid Moodie, an<br />

eye surgeon from Dundee.<br />

My husband, Graeme Cochrane Moodie was<br />

their son. He died in August 2007, but his many<br />

happy memories of Craigisla are described in<br />

detailed, written recollections. With this material<br />

as a base, I am now writing a book about his<br />

early life. I have found some material on the<br />

Internet; however, I would like to hear any<br />

memories or stories of the Cochranes or Craigisla<br />

and its surrounding area. Photos would be<br />

most welcome. Can you help me?<br />

Before coming to the UK, I was a journalist in<br />

Canada, and now live in York, where Graeme<br />

was the Founding Professor of Politics at the<br />

University of York.<br />

RED CROSS WEEK<br />

Anne and Betty would like to thank everyone who<br />

came to our ‘Caring Cuppa’ coffee morning at Burnside<br />

Court for Red Cross Week. A big thank you to<br />

our band of helpers and to the bakers, and all who<br />

donated to our wonderful raffle. The generous sum<br />

of £320 was raised for our Therapeutic Care Service<br />

which the Red Cross provide.<br />

CONSERVATIVE COFFEE MORNING<br />

Thanks to all those who came along to support the<br />

Conservatives' coffee morning on Saturday 16th<br />

May. There was an excellent turnout from locals<br />

and the torrential rain held off for the morning.<br />

Thanks too to all those who helped on the stalls<br />

and the many who donated baking and raffles<br />

prizes. The sum of £517 was raised for campaign<br />

funds.<br />
