generated each night in the Town Hall. I would also like to thank my cast, young and old, and all
those people who were involved both at front of house and backstage in making this a great
production.
Of course 'What shall we do to follow that?' is the current question and we are actively looking
at a range of shows for 2010.
Special mention must go to Janey MacFarlane who came along to see the show knowing that
it wasn't one of her personal favourites. We converted her. Enough said.
FIDDLER THANKS ALYTH
May I through the auspices of the Voice,
thank the people of Alyth and district for
coming along to see the recent
production of Fiddler on the Roof. 112
more people saw this year's show than
2008 and from what we have heard we
are delighted that so many folk enjoyed
their evening with us. The cast was
delighted at the audience response to the
show and the great atmosphere
The Alyth Voice is a free monthly newsletter, managed, written, and delivered by volunteers.
AYP MUSIC PROGRAMME (AMP)
“I thought music group was amazing, I learned so much
and had an awesome time.” “I think music group is amazing
fun because I’m learning and enjoying myself.”
“Music group is fun and the drums is best” “Music group
is great fun and good experience for life”
These comments show how much young people in
Alyth have enjoyed AMP since November. AYP Music
Programme (AMP) came about when young people
asked for something creative following a successful
Media workshop run over the October School holidays by
IGNITE’s Pure Media. AMP started in late 2008 and has
grown in popularity since the original pilot sessions with
the average number of young participants ranging between
14 and 25. AMP has offered sessions on drumming,
guitar and DJ (Disc Jockey) performance. Young
people have had group tuition as well as 1:1 tuition when
possible. AMP has also offered basic sound production
and ukulele performance; this led to a number of the
young people performing in the stART festival at Easter.
Some of the young people have also organised a
Fund-raising Disco and they planned, advertised and
organized the entire event with some help from older
teenagers from The Hub. Their work will contribute towards
achieving the Dynamic Youth Awards. As the comments
at the top show, the young people have thoroughly
enjoyed AMP activities and gained a lot from the process.
At Easter, a visit to Tower House community centre in
Dunfermline showed us what could be accomplished on
a larger scale. Tower House offers more advanced music
opportunities in a centre wholly dedicated to music
skills: practice space; professional recording studios; one
to one tuition and up to date equipment for around 100
young people per week.
Tower House was an inspiration and a good model of
youth service. AMP would like to continue facilitating the
personal and social development of local young people
through its effective engagement through music. However,
a number of factors would need to be resolved for
this outcome to be achieved:
More staff and volunteers: As numbers grow, we want
to maintain high levels of tuition and maintain effective
staff contact for the young people who attend.
More Tutors with more experience: Our staff can lead
the group in musical activities but often have limited
knowledge of some instruments. We would love to make
contact with local musicians and tutors who could visit
the group, (not necessarily every session), and give the
participants extra support on certain instruments.
More equipment AMP has so far borrowed most of its
equipment from other sources but we’ve now reached
the stage where its popularity and productivity requires it
to purchase its own music equipment.
We want to expand AMP to become AMMP (Alyth
Music and Media Programme). This would provide the
young people of Alyth with film, photography and other
media forms that interest them and which add to their
skills.
We are currently seeking funding in order that we can
re-start in the autumn. In the meantime if you have any
expertise in any area which might be useful to AMMP,
and are willing to help on occasion - or if you have any
superfluous musical instruments that you no longer use
and would like to donate - - please contact Susan Allan,
Secretary Alyth Youth Partnership email
sandgallan@supanet.com Thank you.
ALYTH YOUTH PARTNERSHIP
© G. Mitchell
© G. Allan
The annual HALFCUTTA CUP golf competition was recently hosted in Alyth by
Garry Mitchell and 13 team members. The HALCUTTA Golf Society, which plays a
“Ryder Cup” style competition, is a match played each April between an Alyth team
and an International All Stars Select, captained by Kurt Davidson of Essex.
Each odd numbered year since 2003 the competition has taken place in Alyth
with the All Stars’ “home” matches having taken place in the years between in
Malaga Spain, Skegness in Lincolnshire and Dublin.
This year and in 2007 whilst the competition has been in Alyth the players have
hosted a fun event which has raised funds for local organisations. On Saturday
25 th April a Horse-Race evening took place in Geo’s Lounge in Alyth where the
sum of £250 profit was raised. This year the Alyth Youth Partnership (AYP) was
selected to receive the money raised. The photograph shows Garry handing over
the cheque to AYP Chair George Allan.
The HALFCUTTA Society is most grateful for the support of Geo’s Lounge in
hosting the event, the assistance of David Barclay in running it and the enormous
generosity of everyone who attended.
After a very closely fought encounter, this year’s competition resulted in the International
All Stars sneaking a single point victory over the four rounds and a final
point victory with a score of 18-17. Congratulations to the All Stars.
For those interested in any further HALFCUTTA information please contact
Garry Mitchell on Alyth (01828) 633255.

ALYTH WALKING GROUP
Despite beautiful weather for walking there was a very poor turnout for
the walk through Jordanstone and Balhary estates. A carpet of wild
flowers and birdsong accompanied the group along the way, with a stop
at the grave of Admiral John Knight whose family owned Jordanstone
before the Duncans and were involved in the ill-fated Darien Expedition.
This was followed by a privileged visit to the secret walled gardens of
Balhary, currently being restored. The next walk will take place on Saturday
13th. June. Meet at 1p.m. in Alyth Square. Contact Ron McGill on
01828 634114 or e-mail ron@plumtree.myzen.co.uk.
FLORA LONDON MARATHON 2009
© C. Duff
Well I did it & in 3:40:47 (5969 position out of 35000+ runners)
It was a really hot gorgeous day (20 degrees Celsius upwards), blue skies,
not a shower in sight, although heavy showers had been predicted during the
week! A little warm for running, as all my training runs had been in the cold
weather! Great for the spectators though who came out in their hordes & lined
every space available sometimes 7 to 8 people deep! They cheered us on,
shouted our names printed on our tops & gave us little treats such as Jelly
Babies, & fruits. What a great atmosphere, what a buzz! A very emotional day
for the runners & spectators all with their personal reasons for competing &
supporting. Along the way there was different entertainment: pipe bands, brass
bands, orchestras, steel drums, DJs & even belly dancers around mile 25,
which helped to keep us going!
I pushed myself really hard as I wanted to beat last year’s Personal Best
Time. This I did by 25 minutes! I was wearing a Lucozade time band for a 3.30
Marathon but when I saw the 8min pacer pass me by at around 30k I thought I'll
try & keep up but couldn't! I was cramping up & by this stage it was just a matter
of keep going at a jog pace & try not to stop or walk as I wanted my sub 4
hrs. So very happy with my 3:40:47!!! I did the first half reasonably quickly but
slowed down over the second half. Although I made sure I drank water & Lucozade
drinks I still hit little 'walls' along the way, at 16 & later around 22! I took
3 lucozade gels but after the third felt a little queasy so decided not to bother
with the 4th one I had in my pocket.
These were my split times:
TIMES
5 km 0:22:21 25 km 1:59:07
10 km 0:45:36 30 km 2:26:00
15 km 1:09:33 35 km 2:54:50
20 km 1:34:04 40 km 3:26:26
half 1:39:30 finish 3:40:47
So I'm happy with my 2nd Marathon! Only a little sore the day after and a few
small blisters. I'm going to apply for a ballot place for London Virgin Marathon
2010 & maybe try for a place in some of the smaller marathons!
Thanks to all my sponsors for your donations, goodwill wishes & support! To
date (April 27th) I have raised £1,741 before 'gift aid' so will give the charity
over £2000 once 'gift aid' has been added!
So, I achieved a PBT, raised another £2000+ for Children with Leukaemia &
got a little tan as well! That's not bad, is it?!!!!
What is the origin of the name Crathie Bridge?
~~~
Answer to last month’s Teaser – The origin of The Craig?
baronia de Crag de Glenyllay, 1323 - R.G.S.; 1487 - B.C.P.
the barony of Crag, 1496 - B.C.P.
G. creag, rock.
The crags of the Reekie Linn have given the name to this house and barony,
and to quite a number of houses in its neighbourhood. The Craig was
destroyed twice in its history—once in 1595, when the Catholic Party under
Huntly had been defeated by James VI., and when its owner, Sir John
Ogilvy was a noted Papist; and once again in 1640, after Sir John had been
six years buried in Alyth Parish Church, when Argyll was commissioned by
the Government to carry fire and sword into the lands of Airlie.
In 1797 (Panton), Craig was a farm of 60 Scots acres, increased greatly
afterwards by the inclusion of Incheoch, Gournty, etc.
Fields: The Drum (O.S. 816); the Hill (830); the Hag (806); The Branderach
Parks (832, 833); The Fauds (426); The Gournty Parks (471, 513, 511).
ALYTH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
I would like to open this update by way of thanks to our
past Chairman, Jim Adam and our past Secretary,
George Durance.
Jim started his community working life 60 years ago
when at the age of 23 he became chairman of the then
brand new Caird Housing Association in the housing
estate of Caird in Dundee. Throughout his working life
Jim has maintained a passion for community issues.
He has been associated with such work from the North
East of Scotland to the South West of England. Jim
decided to settle in Alyth some time ago now and again
became involved in local issues. He has held the positions
of Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman of Alyth
Community Council. He is associated with countless
other voluntary organisations around our county and
has a list of achievements too numerous to list in these
pages. Although Jim has now decided to take a back
seat we will still be able to tap in to all of the knowledge
he has built up on his lifelong journey.
George Durance came to our community around
eight years ago now and immediately joined the Community
Council. George has carried out the duties of
Secretary with abundant skill. George has a particular
skill in organising events and raising monies for charity.
He was instrumental, excuse the pun, in bringing the
Brass Band ‘Boobs and Brass’ to our town last year.
From that event £6,000 was donated by our townsfolk
and those that George came in to contact with. That
money went to a Breast Cancer charity. As with Jim,
George is not escaping entirely and he has agreed to
continue to help our community in the fields of events
organisation.
And so to the new, our new members this year are
Susan Allan, Sanjay Samani and a welcome return to
Barbara Prettyman. All three are active in many organisations
around our town. They will undoubtedly bring in
new ideas and many skills. All three are actively involved
in the visioning process in town just now. For
further details on this subject go to http://
alyth2020.ning.com
Your Community Council now has an email address
where you can send in questions, comments or ideas.
It is AlythCommunityCouncil@pkc.gov.uk
Part of the function of the Community Council is to
draw your attention to issues around the town which
are noteworthy. I would like to draw your attention to
some excellent work that has been going on this year
at Alyth Primary School. For a little over a year there
has been an initiative on going in cycling proficiency
and road craft. There can be nothing more important
than the protection of all of our children. Instrumental
in the organisation of the cycling initiative are Ms.
Steph Samson and Mrs Eleanor Neilson. From the
initial steps the school are now working with younger
age groups and the children love it.
Another initiative at the school is the Health Group.
They cover everything from healthy eating to exercise
and now they are providing cooking lessons with a
health theme. Again this initiative has been ongoing for
over a year and Mrs Mary Clift and Ms. Lisa Snedden
have been instrumental in making learning very enjoyable
for the children. Congratulations to each of them
and to the school for making learning fun.
Stuart Clark, Alyth Community Council.
ALYTH COULD BE THE NEXT
SCOTTISH CALOR VILLAGE
OF THE YEAR
Alyth has once again joined the challenge to become the Scottish Calor Village of the Year
2009, after submitting its application on 14 th May. With the chance to win the prestigious
annual competition, along with its biggest ever jackpot prize of £9,000 for community
investment, Alyth is eager to prove to the judges why it deserves to win.
Alyth reached the Regional short-list in 2008 and Janey MacFarlane and Irene Robertson
travelled to Stirling to present to the panel of judges. Unfortunately Alyth was not successful
but with renewed enthusiasm, this year’s nomination has been submitted.
Organised by Calor Scotland, with support from the Association of Scottish Community
Councils (ASCC) and The SCVO’s Rural Team, the awards are designed to allow Scotland’s
rural communities to promote their success and achievements, share best community
practice and demonstrate initiatives towards sustainability. Communities will be judged on
four categories this year; people, business, sustainability and communication.
Alyth joins other rural communities with a population of 5000 or under from the length and
breadth of Scotland, hopeful for a place in the regional short-lists. Coordinator of the
nomination, Irene Robertson, describes why Alyth has a great chance to win: “Alyth has a
fantastic community spirit and works tirelessly to come up with new initiatives, helping to
maintain best practices and achieve sustainability. We also actively encourage our younger
community members to adopt these initiatives to ensure future local stability and
development. We truly feel that our community has something unique and special to offer
and just by entering the Scottish Calor Village of the Year competition, we are taking steps to
make people aware of what our community has to offer and encourage people to come and
experience our exceptional part of Scotland. Many thanks to Stuart Clark, Clive Bowman,
Paul MacFarlane, George Allan and Paul Ramsay for their help in compiling this year’s
nomination.”
There are four regional awards (North, South, Central and Islands), and one national
award in Scotland. Each regional winner will be awarded £2000 whilst the overall Scottish
winner will receive a further £7000. Celebrations in the winning community will be supported
by Calor. The closing date for entries was set at May 15, 2009. Short-listings will be
announced in June 2009, followed by community judging visits. The winner is set to be
revealed in August 2009.
Memory Lane Names
This year each edition of The Voice has featured a school photograph
between 1952-62 sent in by Chic Hill. A plea for names has
produced a sterling effort from many people, local and as far a field
as the USA. Thank you to everyone for their help. Only a few
people left to name, if you know who they are please let us know so
we can complete the mystery!
FAMILY HISTORY PROJECT
The parish church, library and museum in Alyth have teamed up to
start a ‘one-stop’ family history project which will be launched soon.
♦The church will house a computer database of ‘old photos’ and
maps/headstone photos/inscriptions from both Alyth cemeteries.
♦The library offers free Internet access, and genealogy advice.
♦The museum has exciting new exhibitions of ‘auld Alyth living’.
Full details will be published in July’s Voice. Meanwhile look out
your old photos for copying - the aim of the church computer
database is to build up a photographic archive of bygone Alyth,
which we, and future generations, can enjoy browsing through.
ELLIE’S COLUMN
A ROMAN HOLIDAY
I was ecstatic. Granny and Granddad’s offer to take me to
Rome was almost inconceivable. They had told me so much
about their previous trip to Rome, and since then I had always
really wanted to go. I was excited about visiting a place that had
so much history and culture. There would be so many fascinating
places to go, and interesting things to see and do. All I had
to do now was tick off the days on my calendar until the second
of October.
The airport buzzed with energy. People rushed backwards
and forwards from TV screens to where their other family members
sat, to inform them of delays, gate numbers, and numerous
other information the wide TV screens held. There was still no
gate number showing for our flight however. We had got there
extra early as I was so thrilled that I was going to Rome! “Any
gate number yet?” Granny enquired. “Nope” I replied. I paced
steadily, waiting on the gate number to appear. Suddenly it
flashed up on the screen, and I was overwhelmed with excitement.
I was going to “Roma” and on time too. The pilot said a
few words about the height we would be flying at and how long
the journey would take, but after that we were ascending
through the air. The sound the ‘plane made at take off was like
the roar of a lion. Every inch of my body shook, with excitement
and fear. I had been waiting for this day for so long and it had
finally come. I was flying high. Emotionally and physically! I
made a feeble attempt to eat the revolting ‘plane food when it
eventually came round. The flight was uneventful – a little turbulence,
but nothing life threatening. My focus was solely on
arriving.
We settled in to the hotel quickly, and it wasn’t long before we
were out exploring the streets of Rome. My feet ached, I felt hot
and sweaty, almost nauseous, but yet my Granddad insisted we
keep walking. Standing on the Spanish Steps had felt unreal. I
could imagine Audrey Hepburn standing regally beside Gregory
Peck. As I flicked my hair and made an attempt to imitate her, a
smile grew across my face. I was extremely happy to be there,
standing on those famous “Spanish Steps.” “How much longer
Granddad, I don’t think my feet can take much more?” “Almost
there Ellie, I promise” We turned a small street corner, and then
I saw it. To be continued… Ellie Forbes, age 13
SCOUT REPORT by Ron Kirkpatrick
It’s a daunting question “When is enough, enough?” This intriguing
question arose during an exercise in instructing the Cub
Pack in tent pitching. The theory we had got correct, the previous
week a demonstration in the Hut about pitching and striking
the canvas and all bode well. The following week saw us in the
Big Park with three tents to master. Under the direction of two
Leaders, each group was issued with a pile of pegs and two
mallets and the battle was on. With great enthusiasm, the Cubs
took turns with putting in the pegs. At one point, my attention
was distracted and upon returning to the task, I discovered the
peg that was now totally buried into the ground. “Maybe we
should leave a wee bit sticking out so we can put a rope on it”
Enough. This activity was being carried out in preparation for
our Group Camp to be held at the end of the month, and the
Cubs will have to put up their own tents upon arrival at the
campsite. Let’s hope the ground is not too soft or we will have to
dig out the pegs with a spade. We are hoping for a vast improvement
in the weather – there has been too much liquid
sunshine for my liking. Still they say it stops when it reaches the
skin – it’s the process of reaching there that is arduous.
The Scouts have already been under canvas for a camping
skills weekend. In the past I have raised some concerns regarding
the culinary skills of the Troop, but after this weekend I have
to take them all back. The dishes produced would have met with
the approval of Gordon Ramsay even if there wasn’t a recipe
book in sight. The pork chops were delicious despite being
cooked in tin foil (saves on the washing up) and the stew was
very “creative”. The only thing the Scouts left on the plate was
the pattern! The campsite was given due attention making
gadgets designed to make life easier in camp. Some had a
more Heath Robinson nature and I’m not too certain how effective
the whirly dryer would have been, but I am sure the Mark 2
version will incorporate a more substantial model. The composition
of the Troop will shortly be undergoing major changes as
some of the older Scouts move on to the Explorer Section. This
will create opportunities for other lights to shine and I hope they
respond to the challenge as well as their predecessors.
Once again our most grateful thanks to the
wonderful Alyth folk. Our coffee morning on
this time of economic downturn, we think this
Dear Alyth Voice,
We would like to publish in the Alyth Voice
a thank you to all the kind and helpful people
we met in Alyth. They made us feel so at
home.
We are researching to see if there are any
descendents of James Spalding and Cecilia
Ogilvy of John's Hill. My great grandfather
Alexander Ogilvy Spalding of John's Hill and
Toutie Street in Alyth emigrated to the US in
1883 and left four siblings - brothers,
James and David Spalding of John's Hill (or
Alyth?) and sisters, Jean and Mary L.
Spalding also of John's Hill or Alyth. We think
David emigrated to Australia approximately
the same time. Any information concerning
any of these people would be appreciated.
We found the headstone of Thomas
Spalding and Janet Soutar in the Old Arches
Kirk Yard in Alyth. If anyone is related to
either we would like to hear from
you. Thanks and again we appreciate the
warmth shown by the kind people in Alyth and
Alyth Parish Church. It truly felt like
a Scottish Homecoming. We look forward to
returning someday.
THE COCHRANES OF CRAIGISLA
In about 1900, Andrew Cochrane, a successful
grocer in Glasgow, purchased Craigisla House,
near Kilry, and moved there with his wife, Susan
Herald Reid, and their five children. He died
suddenly of appendicitis in 1924, but his widow
stayed on until her death in 1950. One of their
daughters, Emily Susan Herald (better known as
Queenie) married Alexander Reid Moodie, an
eye surgeon from Dundee.
My husband, Graeme Cochrane Moodie was
their son. He died in August 2007, but his many
happy memories of Craigisla are described in
detailed, written recollections. With this material
as a base, I am now writing a book about his
early life. I have found some material on the
Internet; however, I would like to hear any
memories or stories of the Cochranes or Craigisla
and its surrounding area. Photos would be
most welcome. Can you help me?
Before coming to the UK, I was a journalist in
Canada, and now live in York, where Graeme
was the Founding Professor of Politics at the
University of York.
EASTER CAMP TO R.A.F AKROTIRI CYPRUS 2009
Two Cadets Flight Sergeant Andrew Morrison (Blairgowrie) and Cadet Lewis Dobie (Alyth) of
2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, Air Training Corps recently returned from Easter Camp at Royal
Air Force Akrotiri, Cyprus.
Their journey commenced at HMS Caledonia, Fife, where after meeting other cadets from
various Squadrons of Dundee & Central Scotland Wing, Air Training Corps they departed at
2100hrs travelling by coach, arriving at Heathrow at 0530 two hours early. While they waited
there they separated to browse Heathrow’s impressive shopping plaza as well as getting accustomed
to all the new faces. They boarded a Boeing 737 at 0730 and arrived in Larnaca at
1700hrs (1500 GMT), and at RAF Akrotiri at 1800hrs.
The cadets were detailed into Flights - A, B, C or D – and took part in a ‘Station Familiarity’
quiz in which each flight was given riddle questions to answer. The quiz took the flights all
around the base. While on the quiz there was a Sentry and a Hercules outside the hangers.
They also visited the Dog Section, where they learned how to train dogs to search for drugs,
including a demonstration of a dog attacking and a searching for drugs. The Flights were
separated into AB and CD. While A & B flights visited the navy boat and used its lifesaving
gear, C & D flights went on a walk to local cliffs. After Dinner, A & B flights visited the USAF
base while C & D flights relaxed on the beach, then the flights switched over. Visiting the
American airbase and seeing a U-2 land was deemed as one of the camp’s highlights.
They also had a visit into Cyprus, visited a UN base responsible for keeping the peace
between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, and were given a tour into the Buffer
Zone (the border between the Greek and Turkish Cyprus). They all returned from the buffer
zone and went to Limassol’s abandoned airport occupied by the United Nations to get a demonstration
on anti-rioting techniques. After visiting the UN they had a trip into Northern Republic
of Turkish Cyprus, which many said was an unpleasant place to see. They also visited Paphos
and Limassol in their free time and had a shopping trip.
Andrew and Lewis had a fantastic time at this camp and have since briefed all cadets and
staff of their Squadron about all they experienced.
ALYTH 2020
A CLEAR VISION FOR ALYTH’S FUTURE
Background
A further public meeting was held, on 27th April, to discuss how to best
proceed with identifying what the people of Alyth want for the future of their
town. The meeting was well attended, with many who had not come to the
first meeting. A wide ranging and open discussion came to the broad
consensus that:
♦ Alyth needs a clear “vision” for how the town should look and feel in
future. This would help identify and prioritise which amenities and
facilities might be developed
♦ There is a need to consult as widely as possible and use as many
alternative forms of engagement and feedback as possible
♦ Drumderg funds should not be used for projects that are the
responsibility of Perth & Kinross Council or other statuary bodies.
♦ Funding should be sought from other sources as well as the
Drumderg Wind Farm Fund.
♦ Any projects should be co-ordinated with the Council and the many
community groups already working hard in Alyth
♦ Funds should not be used to pay for a consultant at this stage, but
rather seek to do this on a volunteer basis as far as possible
♦ The most suitable legal structure for delivering these developments
needs to be identified
So an initial working group was formed to:
♦ Involve as many people from Alyth, and gather their views on a
vision for the town and the facilities they would like to have
♦ Identify who should be responsible for delivering the various projects
and co-ordinate with them
♦ Recommend an appropriate legal structure for delivering projects
that are not the responsibility of an existing body
The working group needs to deliver this is a short space of time (3-4 months)
to avoid the process dragging on.
Going Forward
The working committee are: George Allan, Susan Allan, Amanda Blakeman,
Clive Bowman, Stuart Clark, Clare Cooper, John Corrigan, John Gordon,
Edith Payne, Barbara Prettyman, Paul Prettyman and Sanjay Samani.
Sanjay Samani has been nominated as Chair, Stuart Clark as Secretary and
Amanda Blakeman as Treasurer.
The name “Alyth 2020” was chosen to cover the process of gathering
peoples’ views. We want to get a clear 20/20 vision of what people want the
town to be in the year 2020!
We need to know from you:
♦ What sort of town would you like Alyth to be?
♦ What should it feel like to live here?
♦ What should it feel like to visit?
♦ What facilities, services and amenities are missing?
♦ What has been lost from Alyth that we should bring back?
♦ How can we best deliver all of this?
Alyth 2020 needs to involve as many people as possible, young and old, so
please:
♦ Talk to us at our stalls at the Gala Day, Alyth Show and Market Days
♦ Share your ideas online at http://alyth2020.ning.com
♦ Get your community group to come up with ideas
♦ Respond to a survey we will distribute later in the summer
♦ Attend the other community events we plan to hold over the summer
♦ Get your children involved; ask them to draw a picture of Alyth in the
future and let us have a copy to share with everyone
appreciate your thoughts. Please contact us at:
ALYTH GALA DAY
Sunday 7th June 2009
Update
The planning and organisation of Alyth Gala Day depends
on a committee of volunteers giving up a considerable
part of their own time. The success of the Gala also
depends on the good people of Alyth helping out on the
day. Several members of the committee have given of
their time for a number of years and with few
new members joining, the future of the Gala Day is in
doubt. Marshalls for the parade are urgently required,
plus helpers who would be willing to give an hour of their
time to make the day run smoothly.
Parade
Groups and organisations taking part in the parade
should assemble outside Alyth Health Centre at 12.00.
The parade starts at 12.30 and should arrive in Jubilee
Park in time for the opening of the Gala Day at 13.00.
Hill Race and Family Fun Run
The Family fun run will start at 13.15. Children up to 12
years of age are welcome to run/walk unaccompanied, or
with parents. Goodies for all finishers. Contact Audrey
Gillies on 01828 632571 or e-mail audreyfgillies@hotmail.com.
The hill race and junior hill race will start at 14.30. Preentries
would be appreciated. Entry forms from Ron
McGill on 01828 634114 or e-mail
ron@plumtree.myzen.co.uk.
Gala Stalls
Contact Alison Strachan on 01828 634114 or e-mail
alison@plumtree.myzen.co.uk. All organisations running
stalls please no tombola or raffle, as the Gala
has an official tombola and raffle to raise funds for
charity. Stalls will be allocated on arrival at Jubilee
Park and must be set up by 12.00.
D/DAY by Dan Dewar, 13 Commercial Street, Alyth
We tholed the ‘Blitz’… withstood the strain…
survived with ‘Spits’… fought Alamein…
invaded Sicily from the sea –
then on and on relentlessly!
Their Battleships were soundly drubbed!
And, on the seas, likewise the Subs.
The Fourteenth Army, now well armed,
from Imphal and Kohima, swarmed!
In Panic! Japs were made to run,
fast-heading for the Rising Sun.
We’d stood alone… we’d borne the brunt…
And now, made plans for ‘Second Front’.
A ‘Mighty Force’ was poised to Strike!
commanded by The Warrior, ‘Ike’.
And Monty’s ‘Desert Rats’ were set
to settle, with the ‘Hun’, a Debt!
Now was ‘The Day’, and now ‘The Hour’ –
all eyes, across the ‘Channel’, Glowered!
THE BIG LUNCH 19th July 2009
million people across the UK to simultaneously
What were their thoughts that Awesome day?
Whose luck would hold? Who’d rest in clay?
And, what the cost of yardage won,
before this dreadful day was done?
Each Man knew well the frightful odds,
and put his trust in Self, and God.
So many there had hardly lived –
but what they had, they’d bravely give!
Though scarce of years (their beards still fine)
they laid their young lives on ‘The Line’.
They Stormed the beach! Played well their part;
and left to mourn, sad ‘Broken Hearts’…
As years roll on, and mem’ries fade,
Remember well! Our Glorious Dead.
But also, Please! Remember Those
who lived to strike the ‘Final Blows!’
Young Heroes then, now Old and Grey –
‘The Flower’ that slowly Fades Away…
The ‘Tides of War’ will ebb and flow
in waves of Pain, and Grief, and Woe;
and, aye, whatever’s gained, or lost,
is ‘always’ at a dreadful Cost!
Horrendous scars will always stay
with those who hit the ‘Beach’ that day.
ALYTH'S VIRTUAL FILM CLUB
There has been quite a bit of interest in
the town about running a cinema. A date
for a public meeting has not been set yet.
However, it will be announced in the next
issue of the Voice. Sandy McCurdy
ALYTH HALLS COMMITTEE
AGM – 20 May 2009
Chairman’s Welcome
May I welcome you all to the Alyth Halls Committee 2009 AGM. It is so nice to have
some members of the public here. (Well that is what I had hoped I would be able to
say).
I feel I have to first mention the death of Mr Robert Ball. His wit and sharp tongue
livened many committee meetings and his knowledge of previous matters concerning
the Hall was considerable. Mr Ball gave many, many years service to the Alyth
Halls Committee and since the demise of the Council in 1974, he has played an
active role in the running of the Committee and I would like to formally express the
Committee’s sympathy on his death.
Again, the Town Hall and the Ogilvy Rooms have been well used generally over
the year – we are still trying to attract interest in the lower hall and have offered this
area to the Guides while the Guide Hut is being rebuilt. We as a Halls Committee
are happy to assist them in any way that we can.
The Town Hall is looking good and the new carpet and re-decoration has made
the foyer a very welcoming introduction to Alyth Town Hall. This year new radiators
have been fitted in the main hall, and with the help of Drumderg Funding, we have
replaced all the chairs and tables in the Town Hall and the chairs in the Ogilvy
Rooms. The Ogilvy Rooms have also been redecorated and continue to be well
used. The new look has been very well received by users. We have also purchased
a new table and chairs for use in the lesser hall and a bookcase which is located in
the Chambers which is to be used to store paperwork etc.
As ever, we as a Committee are still looking into ways to create greener and
more environmentally friendly halls and use, where possible, low energy lightbulbs
etc.
We came to an agreement with Inspector Buckley-Jones that a room be available
for the local police to use as necessary but so far, this facility has not been taken up
by them.
We as a Committee wish to express our gratitude to James O’Brien who has
acted as Secretary for around 10 years but who has insisted that he retire and he
has given notice of this retirement as Secretary which will take place after tonight’s
AGM. He has assured us that he will stay on as a Committee Member. I would also
like to express my thanks to the Fabrics Convenor for all the hard work he does in
seeing to the day to day running of both halls and to my fellow Committee members
for their enthusiastic support throughout the year. Sheila Fisher
RACHEL’S DIARY
On 7th June, 13 Blair High pupils including 5 from
Alyth left for the trip of a lifetime. The Voice has
included articles and photos of their fundraising
events during the past year, and now we are pleased
to include the eighth extract from Rachel Mitchell’s
from the trip…
13 th June
There were hundreds of little kids who came and surrounded
us asking who we were, what our names were
etc. They all wanted to be our friends but I fear they had
another motive to try and get money out of us. We then
made our way down to Bandwe beach resort. There was
a beautiful tropical bar and small chalets. The small
beach by the lake was gorgeous and didn’t feel like a lake
at all! We stayed for most of the afternoon relaxing and
taking photos as per usual. We wanted to have our lunch
there which was cheese toasties and chips. It however
took forever and by the time it arrived we were all drooling
over the toasties. On the way home we stopped by the
roadside where there were many stalls with African curios
for sale. We had to barter for our gifts, which was an
entirely new concept so it was rather difficult. Sometimes
it was hard to know if we were getting a good deal or not.
For example I bought a small wooden rhino for 450 kwachas,
whereas Lawrence bought one exactly the same for
150 kwachas! I also bought a picture, a bowl and a giraffe.
I made a promise to one of the dealers that I would
come and buy one of his bracelets, but by the end I didn’t
want to so when I told him he wasn’t very impressed. He
followed me until I reached the safety of the bus and
finally left me alone.
14 th June
Today was a free day to do whatever we wanted. In the
morning we had a nice long lie in which was very appreciated!
Our 2 wee pals Robert and Prayer actually came
around to the house to visit us and as bold as brass
marched into the bedroom. Here (and outside) Lindsey
and I played with them for what felt like forever and in the
end it did turn out to be for a very long time! By the end
we were exhausted and the only way we could get rid of
them was by going to the shop. Even when we returned
they were there waiting for us ready to play again! That
was it for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Back and
forward they could come wanting to play the games that
we had taught them. By late afternoon there was 3 girls
from Masasa High School who had come to see us. We
went out to talk and to my pleasant surprise one of them
was Mary my penpal. They wanted to know how to do
some Scottish dancing so we taught them Strip the Willow,
Gay Gordons and the Military Two Step. They
learned it very well and were actually very good at it. They
then taught us one of their dances which was relatively
simple, as the one they tried to teach us before seemed
far too difficult! During this time the boys were playing
football with some of the Masasa boys. They had taken
one hour to get to us, so had to leave before it got dark.
To be continued…
GLENISLA GOLF COURSE
DEVELOPMENT
Representatives from the Deveron Glenisla Project team
attended a meeting of the Alyth Community Council on
the 29th April to provide an overview and update on the
current status of Deveron Glenisla proposals and indeed
the views received from the well attended public exhibition
held earlier this year. The meeting provided an excellent
opportunity for not only the Community to hear an
update on the proposals, but also for the community to
discuss specific issues directly with the project team.
Deveron Glenisla will continue to liaise with the community
to ensure that they have an opportunity to provide
further comment prior to progressing with a planning
application.
THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
ISLA PARISHES
June 21st
Come and join us in a Sponsored Walk from Loanhead
Farm, Kilry to Kilry Hall, via Burnside Farm, Starting at
2pm and finishing at approximately 4pm. Sorry NO dogs
are allowed.
The walk covers almost 4 miles the total height
climbed is 113 metres – although not all in one go!
Courtesy of the MacLean Family, there will be a juice,
buns and comfort stop at Burnside (48 metres) where
you can sit for a wee while, enjoy the view and refuel
before setting off on the next part of the walk. Those
wishing an easier time can start at Kilry Hall and do part
of the walk in reverse. They can go as far as they wish
along this fairly level section, retracing their steps back
to the hall. This end of the walk will be unsupervised to
begin with but there will be signs marking the way in
both directions so you won’t get lost! Along the route
there will be some things to keep the children (and perhaps
the adults) amused and, as a reward, at the end
the walk there will be tea, juice and home baking to
enjoy in Kilry Hall. We also hope to have some activities/games
to entertain the children (if they have any
energy left!). Transport will be available for car drivers
back to Loanhead if it is required. Grateful thanks are
extended to all landowners involved: F McGowan, M
Clark, J & J Redpath, A Ramsay, A McLean and M & J
Ralston.
Can You Support Us? Sponsorship forms will be available
in Kilry church from early June or by email from
please contact either Edith on 01575 560242 or
AT LAST…
A week of rain, a few days of sun and then back to the rain:
a glance at the Met Office’s website contains the statement
that “The coming summer is 'odds on for a barbecue summer',
according to long-range forecasts.” Let us hope so!
A pair of swallows has begun to build a nest in one of the
outhouses at the back of this house. The mud is still wet and
the nest only partly made. So far there is only one new nest
abuilding, which is fewer than often in the past, but better
than I thought it was going to be a few days ago when the
rain was falling heavily.
Sand martins have been abundant for the last while. I
think they must be nesting in the sandy drumlins over at
Fyal. They have discovered the new pond that the beavers
made next to the drive and are benefiting from the mayflies
and other insects that abound there. There are swallows
there as well and I enjoy watching the two species swooping
over the water. The sand martins make a dry, rasping cry,
as it is described in Lars Jonsson’s ‘Birds of Europe’ and, as
the same book says, are the only members of the swallow
family in Europe to have brown backs.
Where are the swifts? Usually they arrive here in the first
week of May, but I didn’t see one until yesterday (19th May),
when I glimpsed one climbing fast to clear my house. At last,
I thought, a swift!
The reason for the dearth of swallows and swifts is a
reminder of last summer’s cold and rain. Fewer insects
hatched than usual and it followed that there was less food
for many species. That is why there are fewer insect eating
birds around this year: not that bullying buzzards, sadistic
sparrowhawks and malicious magpies have eaten them all
up.
Shortage of grass is a worry in a late spring. Ewes need
abundant forage at this time of year to produce plenty of milk
on which to suckle their lambs. Earlier, in April, at the beginning
of the lambing here the weather was good and full of
promise, but later in the month the weather cooled and the
growth of grass slowed.
Beavers give birth to their kits during May. Today a student,
whose project is to study beaver dams and their effect
on water, came to me and asked if I ever saw beavers during
the day. I told him that it was very rare to see the beavers
in the burn by day, but that one could often see them in
the ponds in the evening. He told me that he had just seen a
beaver in the burn and would I like to see it too. We set off to
look for this animal and found it, lurking by a hole it was
digging in the bank. I returned to the house and reflected on
the nature of this beaver. My conclusion was that it was a
female and that she was preparing a burrow in which to give
birth. We shall wait and see, and be careful to leave her
alone.
At last, I have heard a cuckoo this spring! Paul Ramsay
Following our research into this local volunteer regiment, this month we continue
with an extract from “A Narrative of the Royal Scottish Volunteer Review
in Holyrood Park on the Seventh of August 1860” by Ernest Ralph Vernon,
describing the very first Holyrood Volunteers Review.
© Print of Royal Scottish Volunteers Review - Holyrood 7 August 1860 by Schenk & McFarlane
“THE REVIEW
The Review bands, being those of the 13th Light Dragoons, the 78th Highlanders,
the 29th Regiment, and the West York Rifle Militia, advanced from the line,
and took up a position opposite to the Royal flagstaff, leaving sufficient space
for the Volunteers to pass the Royal carriage. Here also the General Commanding
in Chief and his staff took their stand. On a given signal the whole army was
put in motion, and the marching past commenced.
The general effect was very striking, as brigade after brigade got into motion.
There was not the gorgeous blaze of scarlet and gold which gives so dazzling
an effect to a review of our regular troops, but the quietness of colour generally
pervading the mass had a novel and pleasing appearance, and led one irresistibly
to the thought that, as the movement was so evidently not got up for show,
its continued efficiency and its permanence were the more to be looked for.
To attempt anything like a description of the uniforms worn by the different
corps, would be about as easy as to arrange the colours in a Berlin-wool basket
after a couple of kittens had taken an afternoon’s amusement of the contents.
Suffice it to say, that from the bright scarlet of the Cavalry and Engineers down
to the palest of grays of the Dumfries Rifles, there was every shade of colour
and colourlessness that can be conceived. Among the Artillery, as might be
expected, blue was the favourite hue; while the Rifles, beginning with the dusky
gray of the City of Edinburgh, - which, with its polished belts, gives to a column
when seen from a distance, the look of a stack of the Earl of Zetland’s best
Jewels, - wandered through every variety of gray mixture, with here and there a
patch of green, and an occasional bright facing or stripe, which least gave a
pleasing floral effect to some of the columns.
To reach the spot for wheeling into the saluting base, as that line of march is
called in which the saluting point is situated, each column had to pass behind a
rising ground which hid it from the view of the Grand Stand and the other Volunteers;
and when it emerged, it was marching at wheeling distance—that is, each
company was following the other at a distance equal to its own length. Like
masses of ore passed into the bowels of some vast machine, and reappearing
in solid compact bars, so column after column was lost to view, to reappear in
steadily-moving straight lines of companies, which marched along the saluting
base with a regularity of step that, in most cases, could not be surpassed.
Placed at certain points on the line of march were pioneers of the 78th Highlanders,
and close to these it was the duty of each officer commanding a company,
to pass—a very wise substitute for the usual flags, which are so easily
avoided, and are generally knocked down by the first company that reaches
them, “covering” being proverbially the weak point of Volunteer officers. Not one
inch, however, will Pioneer Pipeclay be induced to budge for all the Volunteer
captains in Great Britain. Not even when Her Majesty’s escort, in taking up its
position, makes a show of riding him over, does he move a muscle. So firm
does he stand, that the rasp of the hilt of Captain Dressup’s sword against his
sporran is heard by the ladies in the Grand Stand, who, by the by, allege that
though otherwise totally motionless, Pioneer Pipeclay, like “pallida mors,” kept
making time—”equo pede” - with his heels to the music of the Review band.
These are not the first volunteers to be seen. He is one of the heroes of Lucklow.
Does he give his adherence to the views of our Peels and Robertson Gladstones
or not? One would like to have a crack (Scotticé) with him over a good
foaming pot, and have his views on things in general, and the Volunteer movement
in particular.
Her Majesty watched the various corps as they flowed by unceasingly with
great apparent delight. She seemed in high spirits, and smiled and bowed to the
corps as they passed with more than Royal condescension. The Prince-Consort
seemed also to take a very lively interest in the scene, scrutinising the companies,
and nodding his approval to the Duke of Buccleuch, with whom he
9 TH PERTHSHIRE (ALYTH) VOLUNTEERS
24
conversed during the greater part of the Review. The Princesses too, seemed
to enjoy the whole scene, as did also the Duchess of Kent, who, we are sorry to
say, looked far from well. What the brilliant staff of officers, many of them heroes
of world-wide renown, thought of the display we cannot say, but doubtless,
with the usual generosity of their cloth, their criticisms would be lenient and their
words encouraging. The people in the Grand Stand could not restrain their
enthusiasm. Even the near neighbourhood of Royalty failed to prevent sundry
bursts of applause, as an unusually good marching company passed by. All the
Highland corps were favoured with special marks of approbation, as indeed
they are on every occasion.
In all, 348 companies marched past Her Majesty; and, as each company
consisted of sixty men - besides officers and sergeants - the grand total cannot
have been anything under 22,000 men. Of these, from 1800 to 2000 were Volunteers
from the North of England, thus leaving about 20,000 as the total number
of Scotch Volunteers who took part in the Review. Such a result cannot fail
to be gratifying to every Scotchman, and has been cheerfully acknowledged by
all the English press as most creditably to the zeal and energy of Scotland. That
Scotland, with so few resources, and so limited a population, should be able to
bring together so powerful a body of men - surpassing considerably in numbers
that brought together by the wealthier and more populous sister country—is a
fact of which no Scotchman would be a man did he not feel proud. The fact is,
when Scotchmen are roused into taking up a scheme, they never do it by
halves, but go into it, heart and soul, with an indomitable energy which defies all
obstacles, and a steady, unswerving zeal, which insures ultimate success.”
Many thanks to Tommy Smyth of The Black Watch Museum, Jonathan Ferguson
of Edinburgh Castle National War Museum, Mrs Woods, Andrew Ogilvy-
Wedderburn, and Sara Ann Kelly of AK Bell Library for their help in compiling
this information. The Voice would be grateful for any information regarding the
9th Perthshire (Alyth) Volunteers or Inverquiech Farm. Irene Robertson
9th (Alyth) Perthshire Volunteers
At long last I enclose photographs of the trophy presented to my great
grandfather, James Tod, sergeant in the volunteers. He was a bit of a crack shot
and I understand that that was for which the trophy was awarded. May I take this
opportunity to set the record straight? About two years ago I submitted a
photograph of the officers and N.C.O.s to the Alyth Voice and it is only because of
this trophy I was able to identify the particular regiment that these officers
belonged to. I didn’t get a copy of that particular issue so I don’t know what the
caption said. I do know that it raised quite a bit of interest as you got a similar
photograph from America showing the same people in kilts. The engraving on the
trophy states
It stands approximately 7.25 inches high, top width 4.25 inches (about 110cm.),
bottom width 5.5 inches (about 140cm.) and its capacity is 1 quart (2.272 litres). I
was mildly surprised to see he was not listed as one of those who attended the
grand parade which was washed out. I have anecdotal evidence he did. He shot
at both Wimbledon and Bisley and seemed to occasionally win a few prizes.
James Tod was elected to the council in 1886 and was elected Provost in 1894
and seems to have got into every thing. I enclose a copy of an article from the
Alyth Gazette and Guardian of the 24th September 1958 on the 50th anniversary
of the opening of the park. Incidentally I forwarded copies of the photographs of
the opening of the park to The Voice some time ago. Evidently it became known
as ‘Tod’s’ Park. Much easier than the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Park, don’t
you think?
Grovelling apologies on not giving me the credit of bringing the Volunteers to
your attention will be accepted!
Yours faithfully, Mr James Tod
PS The trophy is not solid silver, but silver plated.
CHAUNCY MAPLES
Recent correspondence to the Voice from
Janey Hampton regarding a book she is
writing on Balendoch, has produced
another interesting snippet.
Janey set up a charity to transform an
old Glasgow ship into a hospital ship in
Africa. 'Chauncy Maples', the oldest
floating ship in Africa, was built in Glasgow
in 1898 and carried in pieces overland to
Lake Malawi. The ship was named after
Chauncy Maples, the curate of St Mary
Magdalene in Oxford, who became the
Archbishop of Central Africa in 1895. The
Malawian Ministry of Health is renovating
her back into a hospital ship but they only
have half the funds. Visit the web site:
AYP’S DROP-IN CENTRE HAS BECOME ‘THE HUB’
Passers-by will have noticed that the old betting shop in Airlie St has become home to Alyth Youth
Partnership’s drop-in facility for young people aged 15+. Thanks to funding from the Drumderg
Windfarm monies, The Hub is open for business to provide information, advice and support, as well
as a place to chill out for older teenagers and young adults.
We are hoping that this will become a one-stop shop for young people in Alyth to access information
and services without having to travel to Blairgowrie and Perth. For the future, planned partnership
working with Careers Scotland, Perth and Kinross Education and Children’s Services, Job-
Centre Plus, Health, Health Education, Social Work and Housing among others should ensure
easier access to services.
Currently it is only open part-time as we don’t have enough volunteers to work alongside our
Youth Workers. However, the young people who are using The Hub are very much involved in
taking this project forward. Young people are working on creating a databank of opportunities for
young people in the area as well as working on programmes of activities in, around and away from
Alyth. We are also working in partnership with the Energy Action Group to ensure that young people
are included in this important initiative.
Interested in helping? Want to find out more? Drop-in and have a chat with our staff and our
young people – they’ll be delighted to talk to you about this exciting new project.
The Hub is currently open Mondays and Fridays 4-8pm and Saturday 1-4pm.
April was another good month for saving energy. The town used 8.4% less
electricity than it did in April 2008. CAT are planning to hold a weekend of
energy awareness activities on the 29 th and 30 th August, in association with St
Ninian’s Church (who have also received Climate Challenge Funding for a new
efficient boiler) as a launch to a big push to encourage the whole town to help
us reach the 10% target in September. Watch out for details in the next Voice.
Over the next few weeks, as part of our ‘Street by Street Insulation Project’,
every house in Alyth will receive a letter from CAT and a Home Energy Check
Questionnaire.
ALYTH
QUIZ LEAGUE
An inter-town quiz took place between Alyth Quiz League and
Blairgowrie Quiz League on the 14th April at The Strathmore
Golf Centre Alyth and on the 21st April at The Gig Blairgowrie.
The two evenings of quizzes were enjoyed by all. In keenly
fought contests Alyth were narrowly beaten by 5 points. A new
inter-town trophy, gifted by Alyth’s Who Cares Team, was
presented to the victorious Blairgowrie quiz master. A sum of
£410 was raised over the two nights, which was equally split
between the two leagues. The monies going to the Christmas
light funds of the both towns. At a presentation held in Geo’s
bar on Wednesday 29th April a cheque for £205 was
presented to (photo L-R) Ricky Don, Chairman of Alyth
Christmas Lights Fund by Kevin Smith. It has been agreed to
make this an annual competition between the two towns. In
closing may I on behalf of both Quiz Leagues give a big
thanks to mine hosts at both venues for the marvellous buffets
which were provided.
ALYTH KNITTING FOR CHARITY
When I tried to get into my cupboard, I realised it was FULL of beautiful knitted garments, of all shapes and sizes! Blankets ditto! And I realised that another year
has nearly passed since a group of us assembled to sort out, pack and dispatch a similar mountain of kindness, worked with love by the Ladies of Alyth (and
friends!). Once more thank you for your support and generosity. Wool has also been donated and re-distributed to the extent that my garage has now a lot more
room in it! In May, I will be letting others see some of the beautiful work that has accumulated this year as my way of saying a public “Thank You” by “dressing”
Hobbies window again, before sorting and sending them on their way to Balcraig foundation, Ninewells Neo-natal unit, Smile Train and, hopefully Feed the
Children , as last year. I have been donated some more cones! Last year I ploughed my way through, with borrowed equipment nearly 200 cones! So… Before
I start on this next lot, are there any more lurking in the dark recesses of your loft? For once the machines are up and running, it is easier to do a lot! Rather than
a few! Please any queries to Susan Dawson 01828 633239 or e-mail at susanshell@btinternet.com Thank you all for your continued support.
KEEP ALYTH TIDY
Pupils in P2 and P3 at Alyth Primary School held a litter pick in the school grounds during April. Litter Officer Louise
Walker, of Perth and Kinross Council, explained how neat and tidy school grounds provided an important contribution to
a neat and tidy environment. Above: P2 pupils with Class Teacher Suzanne Crighton & Peggy Frowlay (Alyth in Bloom).
