African women make up 39.94% of the total population and
76.96% of the female population.
Approximately 54% of the population live in the urban areas.
Rural areas are the previous bantustans populated by Africans and
used as labour reserves. Urbanisation is more common among men
than women, and in rural areas, the proportion of women in the
population is significantly higher than in urban areas. For example,
in largely rural provinces such as the Northern Province, 55% of
the population is female; in the Eastern Cape, 54% of the population
is female and in KwaZulu-Natal, 53%. In highly urbanised
Gauteng, 49% of the population is female, according to Central
Statistics.
There are major gaps in the available statistics. There is little
gender-disaggregated data, and even less information on the
overlap between race and gender.
