Amongst these are: -<br />
A progressive Constitution that guarantees equal rights for<br />
all South Africans and prohibits discrimination on the basis of,<br />
amongst others, sex and gender.<br />
Promulgation of Laws such as the Maintenance, Domestic<br />
Violence and the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Acts, which<br />
are cornerstones for gender equality. Others such as Employment<br />
Equity, Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination<br />
Act, Land Bank Amendment etc improve the lives of women.<br />
The establishment of the National Machinery consisting of<br />
the Office on the Status of Women; gender units in all government<br />
departments; the Parliamentary Committee on the Improvement of<br />
the Quality of Life and Status of Women and the Women’s Empowerment<br />
Unit. The Commission on Gender Equality is part of the<br />
institutionalisation of gender equality.<br />
The ratification of conventions and agreements such as the<br />
Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women<br />
(CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action confirm the strides<br />
towards gender equality.<br />
Women make up 29.8% of Members of Parliament and<br />
38.09% of Ministers and Deputy Ministers ensuring women’s<br />
relative participation in decision-making processes at the highest<br />
level.<br />
Access to basic services such as water and electricity<br />
improves the quality of life of women. Women are regaining their<br />
dignity and taking responsibility for their lives. Patriarchal attitudes<br />
are changing as evidenced by, for example, the growing anger<br />
against violence against women.<br />
