Female-headed households<br />
On average, there are thirty times as many female-headed households<br />
within the African community, as compared to the white<br />
community. Female-headed households are mainly in the rural areas<br />
and in informal settlements and tend to be poorer than even those<br />
headed by African men.<br />

Access to water<br />
The lack of access to a water source inside the home is more<br />
common in rural and peri-urban areas, and 71% of African households<br />
have to fetch water from outside the home. The water<br />
source is often some distance from the dwelling, and on average,<br />
women spend over an hour every day fetching water.
