Dissemination and Use Plan Fifth Framework Project 25394 Public Now, it has become a good tradition of the Department to involve students of the fifth year of studies into the activities carried in the Department. There is a common consensus, that the problems that are the subject of MobyDick project are excellent problems to be followed, and further explored by the students heading for the degree of Master of Sciences. MobyDick is considered here as an important source of concepts, a good case study with an advanced reference architecture. Study of these problems by students is challenging as it requires inter-speciality knowledge of radio network interface (W-CDMA), capacity management, operation of the IP protocol over specific link layers, and understanding of quality of service issues in packet networks. Both lectures and optional courses will be accompanied by practical courses. Several techniques are considered, out of which pure theoretical work, simulation or emulation, and also experiments in an operational network are considered, depending on the availability of the infrastructure. Apportioning of courses into compulsory, optional and master thesis will introduce flexibility in the teaching paths. A new but quickly growing field of education are the extra-mural studies. This type of education has been introduced in response to a strong demand of the companies, willing to update and extend the knowledge of telecommunications of the employees. The knowledge resulting from participation in the Project supported by the experience gathered during the field trial is a much wanted knowledge, that will draw the audience. This kind of dissemination will be carried on with care, in order to respect the commitment to protect the intellectual property rights of the partners. A quickly growing and changing telecom market in Poland has created an increased demand for consultancy. Advanced radio communications and Internet access are now the driving forces of these changes. The Department of Telecommunications responds to the demand by sharing the expertise with the telecom operators. In this field the findings and conclusions of MobyDick will contribute to a better understanding of the problems, and will help to derive feasible scenarios for the deployment of wireless Internet access and wireless services. In addition to the mainstream activities, the Department of Telecommunications each year holds one or two conferences, that provide the people with an opportunity to share new concepts and ideas. The collaborative research work carried in the Project provides a valuable seed for such discussions. The overall objective of the above-listed activities is to point out a clear view of the feasible evolutionary scenarios beyond 3G systems, which are still considered by many as the ultimate target of wireless telecommunications industry, with no evolutionary scenarios beyond it. This combined approach for dissemination shall bring a substantial impact on the telecommunication community in Poland as well as in other countries. It shall have the effect both in terms of immediate results (e.g., coming from the publication of conference papers) and the long-term results (e.g., by means of education). As a result, it will leverage of the awareness of the prospective evolution strategies for the telecommunication market. At the same time the Department of Telecommunications of the University of Mining and Metallurgy will strengthen its position as a leading educational and research centre for telecommunications. Fifth Framework Project 25394 Public Dissemination and Use Plan 3.2.11 Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien, FTW, Wien, A Within the Kplus Competence Centers framework of the Austrian government, the Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien, FTW) provides a unique focal point for telecommunications research in Austria, bringing together several university institutes and the research departments of about 15 industrial partners, including the big players in the Austrian telecommunications market as well as a couple of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). The internal structure of FTW, composed of three major research areas A (Telecommunication Networks), B (Signal Processing) and C (Mobile Networks), shows immediately that mobile networks and UMTS are already well-established as a major research focus. In this context, MobyDick is considered to be an important project for endorsing and extending the know-how in the mentioned research areas A and C. Moreover, as a direct result of FTW’s participation in this IST-project, several industry partners in the FTW consortium explicitly have expressed great and continuous interest in the research issues related to MobyDick. Therefore, it is planned to create a new project (AIDA) within FTW which is devoted mainly to support and deepen research in the areas of QoS, migration issues, inter-domain mobility and charging for mobile environments. Currently, the preparation phase of AIDA has just started, the project begin itself is scheduled for early 2002. Dissemination of specific know-how among all FTW partners has always been a leading motivation for the close cooperation between academia and industry that forms the core of our research center. Our main knowledge dissemination strategy is based on a very short feedback-cycle between the FTW and industry via staff members from industrial partners that spend a certain amount of their time directly at the center. Moreover, regular full-day member tutorials open to all interested industry partners use to include presentations both on a survey and in-depth level. Similarly, external seminars and consulting activities provide further possibilities for presenting project results to a larger audience.
