architecture work, as well as the development and implementation of MobyDick
mechanisms will open new business opportunities for the mobile service provider (T-
Mobile) and the backbone provider (business unit Data Communication) of Deutsche
Telekom.
For the purpose of disseminating the results of the MobyDick project, T-Nova will establish
strong co-operations with business units inside Deutsche Telekom AG responsible mobile
wireless communication. It will involve T-Mobile, as the mobile service provider of Deutsche
Telekom, in the field trial activities of MobyDick. Furthermore, Berkom will disseminate the
results of MobyDick by workshops and technical papers addressed to standardization
bodies and conferences. Regularly meetings and workshops are agreed upon to widely
exchange project information and to influence product developments especially towards T-
Mobile and the business unit Data Communication.
3.2.2 NEC Network Development Laboratories, Heidelberg, D
NEC Corporation with his over 100 years of business experience, global operations, and a
cutting-edge technology in numerous fields, is a leading provider of Internet solutions. NEC
has structured its business into three in-house companies, namely NEC Solutions, NEC
Networks, and NEC Electron Devices. NEC Networks provides Internet solutions to
customers including network operators, Internet service providers and broadcasters, and is
the primary internal customer of NEC Europe Ltd. Network Laboratories Heidelberg. The
mission of our labs is to develop innovative Internet solutions by integrating multimedia and
mobility for high-quality and truly ubiquitous access to Internet services. Our labs in
Heidelberg co-operate with labs and research centres in Japan and the USA, bringing
together and using a vast amount of international expertise in mobility and the Internet.
Two areas of particular interest to NEC Corporation are Internet and mobility. In each of
these areas, NEC aims to be the technology leader with its products. Among these range
core routers of the CX5000 series, edge routers of the IX5000 series, and the CX6800 QoS
Servers to name a few. For all these products, NEC is one of the few companies with a
strong strategic focus on IPv6, as shown through the early presence of IPv6 in its product
range. In addition, NEC is committed to implementing Mobile IP in its products. In the
mobility area, NEC is the leading provider of W-CDMA equipment and has provided W-
CDMA equipment and terminals for the world’s first two operational UMTS networks,
namely the UMTS networks of Manx Telecom (Isle of Man) and NTT DoCoMo in Japan.
Besides its strong position in the Japanese market, NEC is currently increasing its
presence in Europe, both in terms of marketing and sales and in research and
development. NEC is actively promoting its latest technology to increase the speed of
deployment not only 3G and beyond, but of IPv6 based Internet as well. This will generate
new business opportunities and jobs in Europe, as shown by Telecom Modus Ltd., a joint
venture 3G development company established in 1998 between NEC Corporation of Japan
and ERA Technology Ltd. in the UK.
With this in mind, NEC business units have from the very beginning shown a strong and
direct interest in the Moby Dick project. NEC Network Laboratories Heidelberg regularly
presents results of the Moby Dick project to NEC business units as part of its routine
dissemination work. Results also flow into internal reports and into overall considerations of
architecture and strategy within NEC as a whole. Beyond this, software will also be
transferred to development units in Japan and to Telecom Modus Ltd. in the UK, where
these results are used as an integral part of their product development.
