6 Summary and Outlook
This Deliverable should be regarded as a baseline document for the whole Moby Dick project, with the
assumption that the presented architecture is for the time being final, but might be enhanced in successor
activities. The Deliverable summarises the work during the first thirty months of the project and includes
a description of generic operational scenario.
The Moby Dick Architecture has three goals which are orthogonal: First, the Internet Protocol is regarded
as convergence layer for mobility management, AAAC, and QoS issues. This requires a lower layer
technology independent solution with the goal to provide seamless mobility compared to the one of
existing networks. Second, Moby Dick will manage resources of the scarce wireless access technology
efficiently, namely TD-CDMA and WLAN and third, the whole concept will be targeted towards a
commercial environment and all the required mechanisms will be added around the IETF AAA concept.
The now starting trial will provide qualitative and quantitative answers to various questions related to
overall feasibility, scalability and further operational aspects.
The Moby Dick architecture is fully IP compliant and a more radical approach as several in various
standardization bodies discussed “ALL-IP” approaches. This choises had been made because backward
compatibility was not an issue.
