Responsibility Statement<br />

I-70 travels through the heart <strong>of</strong> Blue Springs, however all motor vehicle accidents on<br />

I-70 are worked by the Missouri Highway Patrol. Blue Springs Police handle all<br />

criminal cases on I-70 in the City Limits and assist on motor vehicle accidents. The<br />

Police also assist Central Jackson County Fire District who are responsible for the safe<br />

and quick mitigation <strong>of</strong> any fire, rescue (including motor vehicle accidents), medical<br />

emergency and hazardous materials incident. The Public Works Emergency<br />

Management is responsible for utility coordination, heavy equipment and hauling, and<br />

the provision <strong>of</strong> necessary personnel.<br />

The Office <strong>of</strong> Emergency Preparedness handles only major disaster-type incidents. The<br />

<strong>Kansas</strong> City, Missouri, Fire <strong>Department</strong> establishes the fire department incident<br />

command center upon arrival and until incident is cleared. The primary concern is to<br />

assess, treat, extricate (if needed) and assist in transport <strong>of</strong> any injured parties at scene.<br />

They will work to mitigate any and all hazardous conditions found at incident and assist in<br />

maintaining traffic control at the scene prior to the arrival <strong>of</strong> law enforcement. Captain Cy<br />

Ritter is the Commander <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Kansas</strong> City, Missouri, Police Traffic Unit as well as a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the department’s Critical Incident Management Committee. City agencies will<br />

handle all accidents on freeways and streets within the <strong>Kansas</strong> City, Missouri city limits.<br />

Responsibility Statement<br />

The Missouri Highway Patrol will work all accidents with the assistance <strong>of</strong> the Liberty<br />

Police. If an incident occurs and no troopers are available, the Liberty Police they will<br />

work the accident. If there is a potential crime related to the accident, the Pleasant Valley<br />

Police <strong>Department</strong> will work the incident on the highway in the city limits <strong>of</strong> Pleasant<br />

Valley. If a major crime is related to the accident, a special unit will work the incident. The<br />

Fire <strong>Department</strong> manages all incidents involving injury accidents, fires or hazardous<br />

materials. The Public Works <strong>Department</strong> has no direct responsibilities for freeway or<br />

state highway system but could assist by providing heavy equipment for repairs, snow<br />

removal, utility (water and sewer) repair, etc.<br />
