Issues/Concerns/Questions – The following issues or concerns were presented during the<br />

question and answer portion <strong>of</strong> the presentation.<br />

• Questions were raised as to the role <strong>of</strong> KDOT in the rollout <strong>of</strong> the Intelligent<br />

Vehicle Initiative (IVI) and other vehicle-based applications. Seminar<br />

leaders acknowledged that the introduction <strong>of</strong> IVI and similar technology<br />

was the province <strong>of</strong> the automobile manufacturers. Seminar leaders<br />

discussed the fact that this technology was available and was being <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />

certain high-end cars and predicted that many IVI applications would be<br />

available in the coming years in moderate to low-end cars.<br />

• Questions were raised as to who would be paying the $1,000 to $1,500 per<br />

GPS transponder for AVL and Mayday in public vehicle. KDOT personnel<br />

indicated that the funding issue was a matter <strong>of</strong> discussion at this point in the<br />

planning process.<br />

• Seminar leaders were asked to discuss the “smart construction zone”<br />

technology being applied by KDOT at the present time. Seminar leaders<br />

discussed the zones being designed or applied in <strong>Kansas</strong> City, on I-35 south<br />

<strong>of</strong> Newton and in Topeka<br />

• Other questions presented by the audience addressed issues such as increased<br />

driver distraction with the addition <strong>of</strong> navigation devices in vehicles,<br />

consumer cost concerns, and the ability <strong>of</strong> VMS to convey complicated<br />

information within their brief exposure period.<br />

District #2 ITS Awareness Seminar – Salina – March 29, 1999<br />

Overview - The District #2 seminar took place at the KDOT District #2 headquarters in<br />

Salina on March 29, 1999. In addition to KDOT district personnel, 33 individuals were<br />

invited to attend the seminar. 10 non-KDOT personnel attended the seminar. Total<br />

attendance at the seminar was16.<br />

Project personnel in attendance - Matt Volz, ITS Coordinator, KDOT; Chris Beightel,<br />

Assistant ITS Coordinator, KDOT; Erin Flanigan, Project Manager, TranSystems; Scott<br />

Russell, Account Executive, Jane Mobley Associates; Bruce Baldwin, ITS/Safety<br />

Engineer, FHWA.<br />

Issues/Concerns/Questions – The following issues or concerns were presented during the<br />

question and answer portion <strong>of</strong> the presentation.<br />

• Workshop participants were particularly interested in the AVL technology.<br />

While some participants shared the concern that some personnel may resist<br />

AVL/GPS applications, most participants agreed that the value <strong>of</strong> location<br />
