Look Ahead: State Circle Conventions
ONTARIO’S WINNING FORMULA FOR CONVENTION SUCCESS
The widely attended 55th Annual
Columbian Squires Ontario Provincial
Board (State Circle) Convention, held June 5-
7, 2009, in St. Catharines, Ontario, was
packed with activities for the delegates and
counselors who came from 17 circles in the jurisdiction.
“The Squires program in Ontario is successful
because we are blessed with the full support
of the entire state board that recognizes and
supports this very important and necessary
youth program,” says Steve Laicini, Ontario’s
State Squires Chairman.
SEE ONTARIO, PAGE 2
PLAN NOW FOR SQUIRES from
your circle to attend your jurisdiction’s state
circle convention. Attending a state circle
convention gives a Squire the opportunity
to participate in a large gathering of people
from beyond the local area who may have
new, different ideas. Many state circle conventions
offer seminars, discussion groups
and workshops on leadership topics.
Each circle is entitled to have four voting
delegates and four alternates attend its jurisdiction’s
convention. The voting delegates
are the chief squire, deputy chief
squire and two delegates. Circle members
elect their two delegates and four alternates.
Squire delegates may propose, debate and
vote on resolutions and any Squire may run
for election to a state circle officer position.
Any Squire may attend a convention as a
visitor.
REMINDER
Fraternal Survey Due By Jan. 31
Chief Squires and bursars are responsible for completing and submitting
the 2009 Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity (#1728C),
found online at www.kofc.org/squires. Click on “Circle Forms” then
select the appropriate file. The form may also be found in the Circle Report
Forms Booklet (#401). To record your achievements give a copy of
the Survey of Fraternal Activity Individual Member Worksheet (#1728A)
to each member. Compile totals for the entire circle on the 2009 Annual
Survey of Fraternal Activity.
The chief squire
and bursar should sign
and submit it before
Jan. 31, 2010.
The Survey can be filed
online at www.kofc.org/forms, faxed
to the Department of Fraternal Services at 203-
752-4108, or mailed to the Knights of Columbus
Supreme Council Office, Department
of Fraternal Services, 1 Columbus
Plaza, New Haven, CT 06510-3326.
Get Your Recruiting in Gear
Now is the time to review your recruitment plans to make sure your circle is
well on its way to reaching your membership goal for the 2009-10 fraternal
year. Circle membership committee chairmen and
committee members should have a year-long plan
for recruitment drives and a periodic schedule of
investiture ceremonies. Recruitment drives can include
in-school recruitment — by making announcements
over the public address system, by
going class-to-class, or by holding an assembly.
Plan on having a drive after Sunday Masses. Have
circle members pass out information (with your
pastor’s permission) outside the church. Use the
“Sensory Overload” poster (#4560) to publicize
the Squires in schools and parishes.
Develop a list of prospects, including brothers,
friends, classmates, sons of Knights, and altar
boys. Give each prospect the “Believe in Fun”
(#4556) brochure and “You In?” (#4557) foldout
flyer that describe the program. Invite prospects
and their parents to an “Open House” to meet
the current Squires and counselors, and to learn
more about the Squires program.
Circles planning to organize their own ceremonial teams can order ceremonial
books and materials from the Supply Department. After an investiture ceremony,
Squires should present each new member with an investiture certificate
(#1481). Posters, flyers and certificates can be ordered from the Supreme
Council Supply Department.

Ontario State Squires Chairman Steven Laicini (standing, far right) accompanied various award winners at
the 55th Annual Columbian Squires Ontario Provincial Board (State Circle) Convention.
ONTARIO, FROM PAGE ONE
The weekend kicked off with an investiture
ceremony followed by an ice-breaker
where guests identified which favorite music,
cars, etc., belonged to which provincial board
officer. The evening concluded with a marshalls
meeting, a delegate and resolutions
meeting, and a late-night counselors meeting.
Saturday’s events began with a business session,
followed by lunch and a workshop
where the Senators Club, whose members are
past provincial board officers, explained the
responsibilities, roles and function of the
provincial board. The workshop was followed
by a bowling tournament where everyone got
a chance to stretch after a full day’s worth of
business.
Everyone attended Mass celebrated by Father
Philip Kennedy, Provincial Father Prior.
Mass was followed by the much-anticipated
semi-formal convention banquet and awards
ceremony, attended by more than 200 people.
“The head table was piped in by Fr. Philip
who is also a very talented bagpipes player,”
Laicini said.
Sunday morning’s business session included
the election of the 2009-2010 provincial
board officers, discussions on resolutions,
and the farewell speeches from outgoing
Provincial Board officers.
“We were honored to have in attendance
our Worthy State Deputy Mr. Yvon Robert
and his wife, Noëlla, who joined us for the
entire weekend,” Laicini said.
Have Outstanding Members?
Recognize Them With Certificates!
The Columbian Squires Certificates flyer (#2755)
lists information, including prices, on all Columbian
Squires-related certificates offered by the Supreme
Council office. Most of the certificates listed cost 25
cents each. Forward orders for these certificates to
the Supreme Council Supply Department. Use a
Requisition Form (#1) when ordering. A green
Squires horizontal certificate folder (#4106) or
vertical one (#4107) can be used with certificates.
Each folder costs $2. Certificates can be presented
to recipients during year-end recognition events
such as an awards banquet, dinner for graduating
Squires or counselor recognition night.
CONVENTIONS, FROM PAGE ONE
At a convention, Squires meet other Squires from
throughout the jurisdiction to discuss circle problems
and develop solutions. Learning about other
circles’ projects can inspire Squires to undertake
similar programs. The convention is a time for
Squires to propose, vote on and begin planning jurisdiction-wide
projects, such as charitable activities
or sports tournaments. Many conventions
include social activities, sporting events, trips to
nearby attractions (such as an amusement park),
service projects, and an awards banquet. Additionally,
counselors can share ideas that may benefit
their own circles.
Contact your state squires chairman to find out
when and where your jurisdiction’s state circle convention
will be held.

SQUIRES IN ACTION
Squires from Father Mychal Judge Circle 4853 in East Haven,
Conn., prepared and served lunch at the Branford Community Dining Room
(local soup kitchen) on Aug. 8, 2009. The Squires served chicken with all the
trimmings to 52 people at the facility and were responsible for the kitchen cleanup.
The circle members decided to help the soup kitchen in the future by conducting
a food drive. Pictured is Squire David dishing out a bowl of vegetable soup.
Seven Squires from Deacon Dick Kauth Circle 5194 out of Holy
Spirit Church in Denver, N.C., were confirmed on May 29, 2009. The seven
Squires, all founding members of Circle 5194, were part of a confirmation class of
24. Shown in the photo, from left, are Michael Burke, Brian Lehman, Tucker Dowell,
Bishop Peter Jugis, Joey Redmond and Brendan D’Amato. The two Squires
not pictured are Thomas Francis and Nick Cesmat.
Squires from Saint Polycarp Circle 5248 of Smyrna, Del., assisted
Account Executive Nadya Dutchin of Be the Match Registry in recruiting marrow
donors at St. Polycarp Church.
Knights from San Pedro de Bautista Council 6116 in Quezon
City, Metro Manila, in Luzon, and 16 Squires from St. Peter
Circle 2134 joined Father Carlos S. Sanchez to brave the rain for a dawn procession
around the neighborhood of San Pedro Bautista Parish to celebrate the
birthday of the Virgin Mary. The procession started at 4 a.m. and passed through
the Barangays of Damayan, Mariblo and Paraiso. The Squires distributed some
100 rosaries donated by Past Grand Knight Macario Rivera.
Squires from Sum-Ag (Bacolod City, Visayas) Circle 4651 provided
food to needy children in Purok Sto. Nino, one of the nearby impoverished
communities in the village. The meal included hot rice soup with bread. The
Squires also clean the parish church once a month and have a choir that performs
during the second Sunday Mass of every month.
St. Peter’s Circle 5263 in Winnipeg, Man., prepared chili and
served the meal to more than 200 people at a parish soup kitchen. The Squires
spent two days working on the meal that was financed by their sponsor, St.
Peter’s Council 12319.
Heeding God’s Call: Circles Support Vocations
Serving God through a religious vocation
can be fulfilling and spiritually uplifting. It
also requires dedication and work. As
Catholics, Squires should be open to this call
to serve God in a special way and support
those who answer it.
Squires can help encourage and assist vocations
through the Order’s Refund Support Vocations
Program (RSVP) and by observing
March as “Vocations Month” (see sidebar).
Under the RSVP program circles that contribute
a minimum of $100 to a seminarian or
postulant are eligible to receive from the
Supreme Council a refund of $20 for each
$100 contributed. The rule is that the sum
must go to a single qualified person; it may not
be divided or apportioned to more than one
recipient.
The following persons are eligible to receive
RSVP funds:
Seminarians attending college seminaries
(sometimes called minor seminaries);
Seminarians who have been accepted by a
diocese and are currently in their “spirituality”
year;
Seminarians attending major seminaries
(usually, four years) in preparation for
priestly ordination;
Seminarians in their “pastoral” year (most
often, when they are deacons);
Seminarians who belong to a religious institute
and are currently in formation for
the priesthood (religious seminarians often
are called “Brother” even though they will
eventually be ordained as priests); and
Men and women who are novices or postulants
in religious orders or communities.
Although circles should support
vocations throughout the year, March is
a special time for Squires to learn about
the lives and work of priests and other
religious. Here are some circle activities
to consider for “Vocations Month”:
Sponsor a vocations Mass.
Invite your circle’s father prior or a
parish priest to speak about his
vocation.
Visit a seminary.
Sponsor a holy hour for vocations.
Pray for vocations at each circle
meeting.
Additionally, the annual World Day of
Prayer for Vocations will be celebrated
Sunday, April 25, when the Church gathers
to pray for vocations to the priesthood,
diaconate and religious life.
Vocations awareness supplies are
available from the Supreme Council
Supply Department and are listed in the
Supply Catalog (#1264), available from
the circle’s bursar, and can be obtained
free of charge when ordered in reasonable
quantities using a Requisition
Form (#1).
Those eligible for assistance do include foreign
seminarians studying in the United States
or Canada; U.S. or Canadian seminarians
studying overseas; seminarians from your
home diocese currently attending seminaries
in another diocese, state or country; and seminarians
from other states or dioceses attending
a seminary located in your jurisdiction.
Persons not eligible for RSVP funds are the
following:
Priests or religious seeking assistance for
continuing education;
Religious brothers not currently studying
for the priesthood; and
Candidates for the permanent diaconate.
A single application form (#2863) must be
filled out and returned to the Supreme Office
to qualify for a refund and for an award
plaque. Form #2863 in the Circle Report Forms
Booklet (#401).
All applications should be submitted —
with copies of the canceled checks or other
documentary evidence — between April 1 and
June 30 in order to qualify during that fraternal
year.
To qualify for the RSVP Award Plaque, the
circle must:
Donate at least $100 to a qualifying seminarian;
Write at least four letters to the adopted
seminarian within the July-June fraternal
year;
Make at least one personal contact with
the individual, if possible, during the fraternal
year; and
Demonstrate some form of involvement
in parish and/or diocesan vocation efforts.
