WELCOME
The Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (KNS) is pleased to welcome you all to the International
Knarr Championship (IKC), 6–13 August 2011.
The regatta will be organized using our club house Dronningen (The Queen) as
base for the venue. The Knarr sailors will have first priority to the prime berths at
the club.
We were happy to organize the IKC in Oslo 6 years ago. This year’s event will follow
very much the same pattern as the successful 2005 event.
The sailing will take place in Bundefjorden only a short sail from the club house.
The wind conditions are normally fair, and there is very little current or tide. In the
afternoon the sea breeze may fill in, which provides great sailing.
After a day on the fjord we will gather at the yacht club for refreshments and daily
first prize giving.
The organizers will provide a good social agenda for all involved.
We are particularly grateful to the Norwegian Knarr Association for excellent cooperation
in planning and organizing this event.
On behalf of the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club it is my pleasure to welcome you all
hoping you will have some great experiences both on and offshore creating pleasant
memories from your time in Oslo.
43 RD IKC – OSLO – 2011
DEAR COMPETITORS AND GUEST – WELCOME TO OSLO!
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to the 43rd International Knarr
Championship in Oslo. The Norwegian Knarr Association has been looking forward
to seeing so many of our boats sailed by the world’s best Knarr sailors in the waters
of our wonderful capital!
Don’t tell anyone, but I am a mere midshipman in the Knarr community (although I
hold the temporary title of Admiral). I have only been sailing a Knarr since 2006,
but from day one I have been impressed by how friendly and including Knarr sailors
are. With the oldest boats from the early fifties (my boat is from 1957), every boat
has its - sometimes stubborn - charm.Wooden boats need and deserve the best of
care, and knowing how to give such care demands a lot of know-how.This knowhow
is passed on from the seasoned Knarr owners to us new guys with helpfulness
and patience. This friendly environment is not a Norwegian phenomenon, but characterizes
the international Knarr community.
Oslo is a unique capital, with a intimate closeness to both the sea and the forest.
We hope you will find time to explore the city and it’s sights.
We have done our best to stage what we hope will be memorable IKC.The Royal
Norwegian Yacht Club has been most helpful and supportive in helping us arrange
the races, and the members of the Norwegian Knarr Association have given up a
lot of their time to make the event possible. I wish to thank everybody for their devotion
and help.
I wish you all a wonderful week in Oslo and may the best team win!
Best regards,
Niels R. Kiær
IKC, Germany shall be included into the rotation as a host country every
fourth year, beginning in its first year of such eligibility following an IKC hosted
by the USA. Following Germany’s first hosted IKC, the ordering of host
countries will continue in its previously established sequence.
ABOUT THE KNARR
66 years ago the first Knarr was shown here at Dronningen.
The Knarr was designed by the welknown Norwegian yachtdesigner Erling L. Kristofersen
in 1943 on the initiative of Willy H. Johannesen og Lars Walløe to design a
new “folkboat”.The criteria was a classic style one design yacht for racing and cruising
which should be easy to handle, reliable and solid, but also cheaper to build
then most sailing yachts of that time. He then proposed it built bottom up on a
fixed fram with a “finn-keel” directely bolted on. Dir Einar Iversen was interested
and had ideas to simplify the building process. The prototype was built in secret during
the second world war at his yard Grimsøykilen close to Sarpsborg in the
Oslofjord.
In the autumn of 1945 the first Knarr was presented here at KNS Dronningen harbour.
Despite many problems during the second world war ON 1 had been finished
in secrecy. Many yachtsmen were interested. But the reception was rather
mixed, «the lines were new with a lot of spring and her freeboard higher then
usual”. Despite the scepticism the enthusiastic Willy H. Johannesen, with good help
from Lars Walløe (ON 2), was able to get enough people interested to receive the
first orders.
The oldest existing Knarr in Norway is ON 4 build in 1947.The list price in 1947
was NOK 5.500–6.000, quite a lot of money at that time, but still less then the
other boats of the same size. ON 4 was later sold to Lars Walløe who at a later
date ordered ON 104.This Knarr is at the IKC dock too, now owned by Lars Walløe
jr. Among the first boats ON 3 «Jotun 3» was owned by Odd Gleditsch and
ON 5 «Pam» by another famous Knarr enthusiast Per A. Mussæus. ON 5 is today
very nicely restored by Jan Harald Nordbye.
The oldest Knarr participating in IKC2011 is ON 14 built in 1948. It is beautifully
restored and owned by Arnt Erik Holter and Erik and Martin Bergsbakk Holter.
1948 was a breakthrough as 12 boats were delivered from Einar Iversen, Grimsøykilen
Boatyard. So many orders come in that other yards, like Kilen Boatyard at
Kragerø, started to build the Knarr.
In 1949 Royal Norwegian Yacht Club approved the Knarr as a National One Design
Class. The class at that time counted almost 40 boats. Gunnar F. Klingenberg, ON
12, who also won the competition for the name of the “Knarr” class, made the first
set of Knarr Class Rules which was approved by the Rules Committee of the KNS
October 15th 1948.
The most important objective of the rules was to make them simple and enforce
them strictly. Experiences from other One-design classes like the Dragon and the
Snipe were used. In particular the Knarr rules were formed to avoid all the discussions
and interpretations that were going on in the Dragon class at that time. There
43 RD IKC – OSLO – 2011 41
should be no genoa nor spinnaker and the rules should be easy to control.
As the Knarr is built over a plug a certificate from the boatyard was required and
the rules concentrated on the standing and running rigging, sails and equipment.
This made it simpler to control. The very compact rules covered 4 A5 pages! The
KNS yearbook of 1949, referring the approval of the Knarr, reads:
«The Knarr was at once more popular then any other class before it.The Knarr
compared with the Dragon is a larger boat, cheaper to built and suits better the
youngster’s demand for a combined boat for racing and cruising.»
In1953 the Knarr was introduced in San Francisco. Due to excellent handling in
strong breeze and choppy sea it soon became very popular and it still is. In 1955
the Danish Yacht Racing Union ordered a plug from Einar Iversen, so Børrensens
Boatyard could make the first Danish built Knarr. He continued building Knarrs in
wood and GRP until 2002.
In 2005 the new Knarr builder C. Schneidereit Boatyard in Stade, Germany deliver
the first German built Knarr, ON 148 and more followed. This first new Knarr
owned by Terje Hansen, is also participating here in the IKC 2011 as well as it did in
IKC 2005.
Now with some of the oldest and
newest Knarr present, and prospects
coming up, we may say: «The «Knarr
ring» is closed, and expanding!»
We are all looking forward for a new
era for this beautiful classic yacht!
Honouring the designer, builders and
enthusiasts that brought it forward
to this healthy and living One-Design
Class!
THE INTERNATIONAL KNARR CHAMPIONS TROPHY
– how it all began...
The idea of an international championship was first brought up by Knud Wibroe,
San Francisco, during the 125 years anniversary regatta outside Copenhagen in
1966 were 35 Knarrs participated. The idea was discussed with Knut E. Røsholm
and among others Arne W. Kamfjord, Oslo and Erik Dugdale, Copenhagen and a
working group was established.
Knut Røsholm, who at that time was the commodore of the Norwegian Knarr
Club, had the responsibility of proposing the trust for the championship called
«The IKC Deed of Trust».
The International Knarr Championship trophy, the silver half model of the Knarr,
was produced at «Marthinsen Sølvvarefabrikk» in Tønsberg, Norway. They have stated
that if anything happens to the trophy it shall be returned to «Marthinsen Sølvvarefabrikk»
for repair.
The first IKC was then held in San Francisco in 1969 and won by the late Robert
York, Belvedere.
The Trophy is perpetual and how it shall be presented and kept is stated in IKC
Deed of Trust.
THE IKC MID-WEEK PRIZE:
«THE PERPETUAL GEORGE VON EERPECOM TROPHY»
– how it all began...
Until the beginning of the eighties, there was no specific prize for winning the
«halfway-race».The host fleets presented different prizes of varied quality. These
were keeper prizes.
At that time Georg von Erpecom sr. of Norway gave to the Bergen Fleet an old
Cup, the «S.S.EOLUS HEDERSPRIS.Till Göteborgs Kungl. Segel-Sällskaps 75-års Jubileumsregatta»,
which had been in his collection for years.
There were no strings attached to the gift from the donator, but the sitting management
of the Bergen fleet decided to put it into the international cooperation and
use it for IKC Mid Week Prize under the name: «The Perpetual Georg von Erpecom
Trophy».
This was done partly in order to always have a nice prize to present to the winner
of the Mid Week and also to honour Georg von Erpecom sr. for the great work and
effort he has put into the organisation of Knarr racing and also for being a great
helmsman and competitor himself from the very beginning and for approx. 50 years.
David Holm of Denmark was the first to win the trophy in Bergen – IKC 1984. He
immediately instituted the tradition concerning the return of the trophy to the
next host fleet: «Last year’s winner should return the trophy containing a bottle of
genuine French Champagne!» This has turned out to be a solid tradition that all
trophy winners ever since have followed.
The trophy cannot be won for keeping and if the IKC races stop, it should be returned
to the fleet in Bergen or – (if there is no organisation) – to: Bergens Seilforening,
Hjellestad, Bergen, Norway.
